After killing a family of three, Huang Ligang and Cheng Liang began to frantically ransack the house for valuables. They stuffed precious items into bags: a platinum diamond watch, laptops, mobile phones, and the cash from Song Ming's wallet.
Holding the heavy watch, Huang Ligang exclaimed, "This thing can sell for a lot!" They then searched the first floor, where they encountered the sub-landlord Jiang and a worker named He. To leave no witnesses, the two stabbed them and tied them up, sealing their mouths with tape.
"What about the car?" Cheng Liang pointed at the white Jeep outside.
"Of course we drive it away!" Huang Ligang replied smugly. "With a car, we can go wherever we want."
Soon after, they escaped Shanghai in the stolen Jeep under the cover of darkness before dawn. At 6 AM, as the sky began to lighten, Huang Ligang said, "See? No witnesses left; the police won't be able to catch us!"
"Exactly," Cheng Liang replied proudly. "This is what we call cutting down the roots; no one will catch us now."
However, they were wrong—very wrong. Just as they thought they could evade justice, the Shanghai police had already launched a major operation.
At 7 AM on June 23rd, after receiving reports of the crime, the police quickly sealed off the scene. Experienced detectives found abundant evidence at the crime scene: fingerprints, footprints, bloodstains, and even a hair left behind by Huang Ligang.
Through forensic analysis, the police swiftly identified the suspects. Huang Ligang had a prior record for theft; his fingerprints were already in the public security system.
"Huang Ligang, 19 years old, from Jiangsu Sheyang, has a history of theft," an officer stated while reviewing the files. "And there's another one named Cheng Liang, 22 years old, from Jiangsu Suining."
The Ministry of Public Security immediately issued a B-level wanted notice. Over fifty officers split into nine teams to initiate a large-scale manhunt.
Meanwhile, Huang Ligang and Cheng Liang were still basking in their perceived cleverness. On June 23rd at noon, they drove the Jeep to Taicang in Jiangsu and then took a ferry across the Yangtze River.
Looking at the rushing waters of the river, Huang Ligang felt safe: "Once we cross this river, it's another world; the police in Shanghai can't reach us here."
"Right," Cheng Liang said as he stroked his diamond watch. "This will last us a lifetime."
They then arrived in Yancheng and parked their car in front of Jiuzhou Supermarket before leaving with their wheeled suitcase. They thought changing locations would ensure their safety.
Just hours after they abandoned the Jeep, pursuing officers discovered the vehicle.
Through visits to the merchants around the supermarket, the police quickly grasped the whereabouts of the two individuals.
"They headed towards Suining," one merchant informed the officers. "I saw two young men dragging a suitcase onto a long-distance bus."
Subsequently, the Suining County Public Security Bureau immediately coordinated an operation, beginning a thorough search.
On the night of June 24, the exhausted special investigation team finally confirmed that Huang Ligang was hiding in a village north of Suining County. At that moment, Huang Ligang was indulging in his "fruits of victory" at an entertainment venue. Wearing a stolen platinum watch and holding US dollars, he told the woman beside him, "Tonight, it's on me! Get the best!"
"You're so generous, big brother!" the woman giggled, her laughter lively.
Huang Ligang, feeling on top of the world, boasted, "What’s this? I have plenty of money; I’ll live like this every day from now on!"
At 1:08 AM on June 25, while Huang Ligang was still lost in revelry, police burst through the door.
"Don't move! Police!"
The moment Huang Ligang saw the officers, his face turned pale. Just moments ago he had been arrogant; now he slumped on the sofa like a deflated balloon.
"How... how did you find me?" Huang Ligang stammered.
The investigating officer coldly replied, "You left more traces at the scene than you can imagine."
Meanwhile, Cheng Liang was also captured at a nearby hotel. Faced with overwhelming evidence, these once ruthless young men had completely lost their previous bravado.
Huang Ligang buried his head in his hands and cried, "I don’t want to die! I’m still young; I don’t want to die!"
"If you had known this day would come, why did you choose this path?" the interrogating officer shook his head. "At 19, you should be enjoying the best time of your life, yet you chose a road with no return."
From the incident to their capture took a total of 41 hours. Huang Ligang thought he was clever, believing that eliminating witnesses would allow him to escape justice. But what he didn’t realize was that modern forensic technology far exceeded his imagination. Every trace he left at the scene became evidence pointing to him.
Ironically, he thought crossing the line of humanity would make him stronger; little did he know that such extreme cruelty only hastened the arrival of justice. Thus ended the "freedom" of two young lives in just 41 hours.
