The summer in Fushun was stifling, making it hard to breathe.
39-year-old Chen Li stood in front of the mirror, staring at the bruised handprint on her face, her tears long dried up. After more than a decade of marriage, she never imagined that her husband would leave her with a swollen face.
To understand how it came to this, we must go back a year. In 2000, her husband Lin Qiang had to go on long business trips for his company, and he was away for a whole year. The household was left with only Chen Li and their two daughters, and life felt desolate.
Every day, Chen Li would drop the kids off at school, buy groceries, cook meals, and wait for the occasional phone call from her husband. She lived a life of solitude.
It wasn't until she met the physical education teacher Liu Qing at a parent-teacher meeting that things began to change. This man was completely different from her husband—gentle and considerate. Liu Qing would chat with her when she felt down, bring medicine when she was sick, and offer warm hugs when she felt lonely.
After enduring loneliness for so long, Chen Li felt like parched land meeting a drop of rain; she quickly fell for him.
By the end of 2000, Lin Qiang returned from his business trip. She had hoped that his return would bring their lives back on track, but Chen Li realized she could not go back to how things were. Her relationship with Liu Qing had become too difficult to sever.
Thus, their secret affair continued for a year.
On July 26, 2001, that afternoon, Liu Qing rode his bicycle with Chen Li around the Fushun Economic Development Zone. They were happily chatting when suddenly Chen Li's face turned pale.
"What’s wrong?" Liu Qing followed her gaze and saw a middle-aged man approaching them.
Lin Qiang's face was ashen, his eyes filled with rage. He said nothing but stared intensely at his wife and the stranger beside her before turning away.
Liu Qing knew trouble was brewing. Sure enough, when Chen Li returned home that night, she faced Lin Qiang's furious assault.
"You shameless woman! I work my fingers to the bone to support our family, and you’re at home cheating on me!" Lin Qiang shouted as he struck her, completely losing his sanity.
"I didn’t... we’re just friends..." Chen Li cried in defense, but all she received was a harsher slap.
Chen Li was left battered and bruised. She curled up in the corner of the bed, listening to her husband throwing things in the living room, her heart feeling like ashes.
Early the next morning, while Lin Qiang was still asleep, Chen Li quietly slipped out of the house.
Injured and desperate, she found Liu Qing.
"I never want to go back to that house again," Chen Li sobbed to Liu Qing. "Please help me; I really have nowhere else to go."
Seeing the woman before him, covered in wounds, Liu Qing felt a pang of heartache. Without hesitation, he first took Chen Li to the hospital to treat her injuries, then brought her to his relative Ma Li’s house in Jilin to temporarily escape the storm.
"Stay here for now; we’ll figure things out once Lin Qiang calms down," Liu Qing reassured her.
But neither of them anticipated that this seemingly wise decision would lay the groundwork for the tragedy that was about to unfold.
On the morning of July 29th, after two days of simmering anger, Lin Qiang could no longer contain himself. He found out Liu Qing's address and went straight there.
Confronting the man who had taken his wife away, Lin Qiang wasted no time with pleasantries and threatened directly: "I know where you live and where your children are. If you don’t take me to get Chen Li back, I’ll make sure your whole family pays!"
Liu Qing looked at the menacing man before him and realized he had no choice. Seeing that Lin Qiang wasn’t joking, he understood that this man would indeed harm his family.
"Fine, I’ll take you," Liu Qing gritted his teeth and agreed.
And so, two men with different intentions set off on their way to Jilin.
