Thirty-nine seconds.
From the moment Chen Li handed the knife to Lin Qiang until he completely stopped breathing, only thirty-nine seconds had passed. Yet, those thirty-nine seconds changed the lives of three people forever.
The smell of blood filled the enclosed train compartment, mingling with the distinct scent of engine oil, making one feel nauseous. Liu Qing still held the bloodied dagger in his hand. Chen Li sat in the corner, her face as pale as paper. She stared at her husband's lifeless body, her eyes devoid of sadness or fear, only an indescribable emptiness.
Neither of them spoke. The train continued to roar forward, the sound of wheels clashing against the tracks was particularly jarring, as if providing a soundtrack to everything that had just transpired.
"What... what do we do now?" Liu Qing finally snapped back to reality and asked Chen Li.
Chen Li glanced at him and then at Lin Qiang on the floor. After a long pause, she replied, "I don't know."
"We... we killed someone," Liu Qing stammered, his hands trembling as the knife slipped from his grip and clattered onto the floor.
"Yes, we killed someone," Chen Li said with an unsettling calmness.
Liu Qing realized the gravity of their situation; they had killed a man on a train! This was a confined space with nowhere to hide a body, and no way to escape.
"We're going to get caught," Liu Qing said despairingly. "We're going to be sentenced to death."
"Maybe," Chen Li replied still remarkably composed, "but at least we won't have to endure his threats anymore."
Her words shocked Liu Qing. He couldn't believe that this woman before him was so cold-blooded. When she had killed her husband moments ago, there had been no hesitation; now, facing a possible death sentence, she showed no fear whatsoever.
Then the train's intercom crackled to life: "Attention passengers, the train is about to arrive at the next station..."
The announcement jolted both of them back to reality.
"What should we do?" Liu Qing asked again.
Chen Li countered, "Do you really think we can run away?"
In the end, they did nothing but sit there, waiting for fate's judgment.
Soon, the train staff discovered the bloody carriage.
Panic erupted as terrified screams pierced the night sky, engulfing the entire train in chaos. The police arrived at the scene swiftly. Faced with the gruesome sight before them, even seasoned officers who had witnessed countless cases were taken aback.
"Did you kill him?" one officer asked.
"I did," Liu Qing admitted voluntarily.
"What about her?" the officer pointed at Chen Li.
"She... she was involved too," Liu Qing hesitated before responding.
The officer turned to Chen Li. "Do you have anything to say?"
Chen Li lifted her head, looking at the officer, and slowly said, "He deserved to die."
Just those three words, devoid of any explanation or remorse.
The officer was stunned by her indifference. They had encountered many murderers—some were frantic, some terrified, some regretful—but they had never seen anyone as composed as Chen Li.
The subsequent events unfolded simply. The two were arrested on the spot, and Lin Qiang's body was transported to the hospital for an autopsy. This shocking train murder case officially entered the judicial process.
During the trial, everyone was taken aback by Chen Li's cold-bloodedness. Not only did she show no remorse, but she also openly declared in court, "I do not regret it."
"Why do you not regret it?" the judge asked.
"Because his existence is torment for me," Chen Li replied calmly.
"But he was your husband, and you have two children together," the judge attempted to appeal to her conscience.
"Precisely because we have children, I cannot let them see me continue to be tormented by him," Chen Li's response caused an uproar in the courtroom.
Liu Qing displayed more remorse during the trial; he admitted his guilt and expressed apologies to the victim's family. However, none of this could change the fact that he had committed murder.
In the end, while the court acknowledged Chen Li's significant role in the case, considering her background of domestic violence and Liu Qing's good behavior while in custody, both were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve.
When the verdict was read, Chen Li showed no expression. Liu Qing, on the other hand, was weeping uncontrollably. He regretted his impulsiveness, regretted his foolishness, but it was all too late now.
On December 12, 2001, this sensational train murder case finally came to a close. The lives of three individuals were irrevocably altered—one was dead, and the other two would spend the rest of their lives in prison.
Everyone was asking: If time could be turned back, would Chen Li still make the same choice?
This is the story of the bloodshed that occurred on Train 2224, a true tale of betrayal, revenge, and the degradation of humanity.
