Long Xi nodded slightly upon seeing Su Yuntang's composure.
"Thank you for your understanding. Since this is your first time in Longfu, if you need anything, feel free to ask the maids in the household, or I can arrange for a servant to go out and buy what you need. I've instructed someone to prepare hot water for you; please wash up and rest quickly."
With that, he cupped his hands in farewell and turned to leave.
As the door closed gently behind him, Su Yuntang finally let out a sigh of relief. She sat on the edge of the bed, carefully recalling the scenes from earlier.
This Long Er Gongzi seemed overly composed, his demeanor proper and his speech extraordinary; there was no hint of the shyness or urgency typical of a groom. Moreover, he had even suggested sleeping in separate rooms, which was quite unusual.
Could it be... that he had already sensed something? Or perhaps he was not truly Long Er Gongzi after all, sharing the same concerns?
A myriad of questions swirled in Su Yuntang's mind, but at least she had navigated through tonight's challenges without incident.
She rose and gently pulled back a corner of the bed curtain, gazing at the bright moon outside, lost in thought.
The next morning, as dawn broke and birds chirped outside, Su Yuntang heard soft footsteps approaching her room.
Hong Xiu and Lu Ao entered quietly, carrying a copper basin and towel.
"Second Young Mistress, it's time to get up," Hong Xiu whispered as she carefully placed the basin on the dressing table. "Today we need to pay respects to the Old Matriarch and Master; we can't be late."
Su Yuntang had actually been awake for some time; the doubts surrounding Long Xi's identity had weighed heavily on her mind, leaving her nearly sleepless through the night.
She slowly sat up, rubbing her tired eyes as she allowed the two maids to attend to her. Lu Ao quickly wrung out a warm towel for her, and Su Yuntang took it and pressed it against her face, feeling slightly revitalized by the steam.
Feigning casualness, she asked, "Has the Second Young Master risen?"
"The Second Young Master got up before dawn," Lu Ao replied while combing her hair. "He specifically asked Li Fu to relay that he would be waiting for you so you could go together to pay respects to the Old Matriarch."
Su Yuntang nodded; it seemed that Long Xi did not want anyone outside Yun Gui Courtyard to know that they had not shared a room last night. They were somewhat in sync.
Hong Xiu retrieved a new outfit from the wardrobe—a begonia red embroidered robe paired with a lake blue pleated skirt. The fabric was exquisite cloud brocade with fine craftsmanship, clearly worth a fortune.
After changing into it, Lu Ao presented her with a jewelry box containing headpieces sent by the Long Family yesterday.
As she opened the box, gold glimmered within, showcasing an array of jewels: Dewdrop Phoenix Hairpin, red gold embellished with gemstones hairpin, pearl netting, jade bracelets... each piece was invaluable.
Looking at these luxurious adornments stirred mixed feelings within Su Yuntang. She gently caressed the Dewdrop Phoenix Hairpin and recalled that her sister Su Yunyan had worn something similar during her lifetime; she wondered where it might be now...
"Second Young Mistress?" Hong Xiu gently reminded her as she noticed her momentary daze.
Su Yuntang came back to her senses and replied softly, "It's a bit too ostentatious."
She selected a pair of elegant emerald hairpins and a few exquisite silver ornaments, then took a smooth white jade bracelet from her dowry and slipped it onto her wrist.
Her overall appearance was refined and graceful, striking a balance between elegance and modesty without being overly showy.
Once she finished dressing, Su Yuntang stepped out of the room and saw Long Xi's servant, Li Fu, waiting under the pomegranate tree in the courtyard. As soon as he spotted her, he hurried over to pay his respects.
"Second Young Mistress, the Second Young Master is waiting for you in the front hall. Please follow me."
