The hall fell silent in an instant, all eyes focused on Su Yuntang, even the concubines ceased their whispers.
Su Yuntang steadied herself and spoke clearly and steadily, "A husband may remarry, but a wife cannot have two husbands. Thus it is said that the husband represents Heaven; the wife represents Earth. Heaven does not change, and Earth does not move. If Heaven does not change, then the sun, moon, and stars cannot be shaken; if Earth does not move, then water, fire, metal, and wood cannot be overturned."
Having recited this flawlessly, she continued, "A woman's heart is singular. With a singular heart comes no impure thoughts; with no impure thoughts comes no worries; with no worries comes longevity; with longevity comes a peaceful home."
Lady Long's expression shifted between various emotions before she finally let out a cold snort, "You recite well, but I wonder if you can live up to it."
At that moment, Old Matriarch cleared her throat, "Enough. The new bride has just entered the family; do not make things difficult for her."
She then turned to Su Yuntang with a gentler tone, "You seem to be a well-educated and sensible child. Since you are new here, if you encounter any difficulties in the future, feel free to come to me directly."
Su Yuntang quickly expressed her gratitude, "Thank you for your kindness, Grandmother."
Lord Long then spoke up, "Now that you've all met, it's time for you to rest. Wanwan, take your second sister-in-law around the estate to familiarize her with the surroundings."
Long Wanwan cheerfully replied, "Yes, Father!"
As everyone stood to take their leave, Su Yuntang followed Long Xi out of Shou An Tang.
Once they reached the courtyard, Long Wanwan linked her arm with Su Yuntang's like a cheerful little bird. "Sister-in-law, let me show you our back garden; it's beautiful!"
Long Xi turned to Su Yuntang and said, "You go with Wanwan first; I have some matters to attend to."
"Of course, husband. Please take care," Su Yuntang respectfully replied.
Watching Long Xi's departing figure, Long Wanwan pouted and whispered to Su Yuntang, "Sister-in-law, don't be afraid of my mother. She's serious with everyone."
Just then, Long Xiao walked by from the corridor. Upon seeing them, he approached and fixed his gaze on Su Yuntang's face for a long moment before thoughtfully saying, "Sister-in-law, you remind me of someone."
Su Yuntang's heart skipped a beat, but she maintained her composure. "Eldest Young Master is joking; we are meeting for the first time; how could I remind Eldest Young Master of someone from the past?"
Long Xiao smiled meaningfully. "Perhaps my eyes are deceiving me." With that, he waved his fan and strode away.
Long Wanwan watched her elder brother's retreating figure and muttered softly, "Eldest Brother has been acting strangely lately since... Sister-in-law..."
She suddenly stopped speaking and covered her mouth with her hand.
Su Yuntang felt a tightening in her chest and quickly asked, "Sister-in-law? By the way, why haven't I seen Sister-in-law today?"
Long Wanwan looked around cautiously before whispering back, "Sister-in-law passed away a few days ago. That's why Eldest Brother has been acting so odd. Sister-in-law, please don't mention her in front of him; he gets angry."
Hearing news about her sister brought a surge of emotions within Su Yuntang as she suppressed her excitement. "I see; no wonder Eldest Young Master looks so troubled."
Long Wanwan held her hand and said, "Let's not talk about unhappy things! Second Sister-in-law, I’ll take you to the garden to see the koi fish. There are so many fun places to explore!"
Su Yuntang followed Long Wanwan toward the garden, but her heart was in turmoil.
That night, as the clock struck midnight, Su Yuntang tossed and turned, unable to fall asleep. The red candle burned low, its wax dripping down the intricately carved bronze candlestick, forming hardened streaks.
Through the window panes, she could hear the rustling of the wind passing through the phoenix tree leaves. Lying on the ornate bed, she replayed in her mind the faces of the Long Family she had seen during the day.
