Long Xi squinted as he stepped forward. "To earn Grandmother's praise like this, you must know more than just a little, right?"
"I have been weak since childhood and have relied on medicine for years. Over time, I naturally gained some understanding of pharmacology. If it comes to prescribing medicine, it’s just some common formulas for calming the mind and strengthening the spleen," she replied.
Long Xi smiled gently, nodded, and took his spear before turning to walk toward the study.
"It's getting late; I should return to freshen up. You should head back as well, Madam, lest you catch a morning chill."
Watching his figure disappear into the morning mist, Su Yuntang felt a surge of thoughts in her heart. This man was highly skilled in martial arts and seemed to be probing her; could it be that he already harbored doubts about her identity?
A few days after their wedding, Su Yuntang sought opportunities to move around the Long Family estate. One afternoon, she used the excuse of wanting to chat with Long Wanwan and took Hong Xiu to the back courtyard.
"Second Young Mistress, weren't you going to see Fourth Miss?" Hong Xiu asked anxiously as she followed behind.
"There's no rush; let's wander a bit first. This estate is so large; I should get to know it all," Su Yuntang replied casually, fanning herself with a round fan.
As they passed through a moon gate, a somewhat desolate courtyard came into view. The blue bricks and dark tiles were clean but lacked warmth.
The phoenix tree leaves were turning yellow, and the branches appeared forlorn. A few leaves drifted down onto the stone steps, left uncleaned.
Su Yuntang's heart stirred; this courtyard was adjacent to the back garden and seemed to be an important residence. Just as she was about to take a closer look, she suddenly heard footsteps behind her.
"Who are you? You can't just enter here."
Turning around, Su Yuntang saw an elderly woman of about fifty, dressed in a gray cloth shirt with neatly arranged hair. She carried a bamboo basket filled with brooms and dustpans.
Hong Xiu hurriedly stepped forward. "Greetings, ma'am. This is the newly married Second Young Mistress."
"Oh!" The old woman quickly set down her basket and bowed hurriedly. "This old servant has seen the Second Young Mistress. My surname is Li; I am the cleaning maid for this courtyard. Please forgive me, Second Young Mistress; my eyes are not as sharp."
Su Yuntang helped her up. "Mama Li, please rise; there's no need for such formalities. This courtyard looks elegant; why is there no one living here?"
A complex expression flashed across Mama Li's face as she glanced around and lowered her voice. "This courtyard... used to be where the Eldest Young Mistress lived. Alas, she was also a person of misfortune."
Su Yuntang paused with her fan and softly asked, "Eldest Young Mistress? I haven't met her yet; if she doesn't live here anymore, where does she reside? I haven't had the chance to pay my respects."
Mama Li's smile faded as she instinctively adjusted her clothing. "The Eldest Young Mistress... she passed away last year."
Su Yuntang loosened her grip, and the round fan nearly fell to the ground, but Hong Xiu quickly caught it. "Ah? So young and... what a pity."
Mama Li nodded, wiping the corner of her eye. "Indeed. The Eldest Young Mistress is such a good person; she never puts on airs with us servants. Every festival, she would give us old servants red envelopes."
"I saw the Eldest Young Master a few days ago; doesn't he live here anymore?" Su Yuntang continued to ask.
"Since the Eldest Young Mistress passed away, the Eldest Young Master has moved to another courtyard..." Mama Li wiped her eyes with her sleeve again. "Perhaps he’s afraid of feeling sad. They were always so harmonious; I never heard them argue. The Eldest Young Mistress was very filial; when the Eldest Young Master was away, she focused on serving the elders at home and managed the household meticulously."
