Su Yuntang bit her lip, "How could such a good person just... disappear?"
"Who says otherwise?" Mama Li shook her head, lowering her voice even further. "A perfectly fine person, and just like that, gone. The master said it was a sudden illness, but we servants all find it suspicious. The Eldest Young Mistress was always so strong and never sick; how could she suddenly..."
At this point, she suddenly straightened up, glancing around before quickly waving her hand. "Oh dear, look at me rambling on about things I shouldn't. Second Young Mistress, please don't take it to heart or mention it to anyone."
With that, she hurriedly picked up the bamboo basket from the ground and walked away briskly.
"Miss, it's getting late; we should head back," Hong Xiu gently reminded from the side. Seeing Su Yuntang still in a daze, she lightly tugged at her sleeve.
Only then did Su Yuntang come back to her senses. She looked at the empty courtyard and barely managed to hold back her tears. The spring breeze rustled the leaves of the phoenix trees in the courtyard. She took a deep breath, glancing at the few trees before turning to leave.
On the way back, Su Yuntang remained lost in thought, completely unaware that Old Butler Long An from the Long Family was approaching her.
Upon seeing her, Long An immediately stopped, a smile spreading across his face as he bowed slightly with his hands clasped in his sleeves. "Second Young Mistress, where have you been?"
Su Yuntang snapped out of her reverie and blinked in surprise. Long An was highly respected in the Long Family; even the master and mistress held him in esteem.
She quickly returned a proper bow. "Old Butler, I was just wandering around the estate to familiarize myself with the surroundings."
"That's good to hear," Long An nodded repeatedly, rubbing his hands together. "Second Young Mistress, since you are new here, feel free to ask me anything you don’t understand. I know all the rules of this household."
Just as Su Yuntang was about to take her leave, Long An spoke again, studying her face closely. "Second Young Mistress, your appearance is truly pleasing to behold. I've been in this household for decades and have seen many masters and mistresses, but someone like you..."
He paused for a moment, a fleeting look of nostalgia crossing his eyes as if recalling something. "You do remind me a bit of the previous mistress."
Su Yuntang tightened her grip on the handkerchief in her hand. "Which mistress?"
Long An was taken aback, as if snapping back to reality. He quickly waved his hand dismissively. "Ah? I misspoke; please don’t mind me, Second Young Mistress."
"Old Butler, why not tell me more? I would like to know about the history of this household," Su Yuntang lowered her gaze softly and spoke gently. "I can't be left completely in the dark."
Long An glanced around cautiously; seeing no one nearby, he leaned in closer and lowered his voice. "Well, there’s really not much to say. Just that I feel your demeanor is very similar to that of the former Eldest Young Mistress. It’s... how should I put it? You have a presence that brings comfort to others; your words are gentle and soothing."
"Eldest Young Mistress?" Su Yuntang blinked in surprise.
Long An's expression suddenly changed as if he realized something important. He looked up at the sky and said hurriedly, "Second Young Mistress, I have matters to attend to; I must take my leave."
With that, he hurried away but glanced back over his shoulder after taking a few steps, his expression filled with unease.
Long An felt it was perfectly normal for her to resemble her sister; after all, they looked very much alike. However, his reaction...
Old Butler must know something about the situation.
