"Yes," Su Yuntang replied honestly, "the Eldest Young Master said he came to see you and me."
"What did he say?" Long Xi's voice was devoid of emotion.
Su Yuntang walked over and sat down on a nearby wooden bench. "The Eldest Young Master brought some snacks, saying they were good things from Jiangnan, and wanted me to try them. He even praised me... saying I am quite beautiful."
A hint of coldness flashed in Long Xi's eyes. "What else?"
"The Eldest Young Master said that we are family and there is no need for formality; he wanted..." Su Yuntang paused, "he wanted to personally feed me the snacks. Liu Mama intervened, saying there should be a distinction between men and women."
Long Xi raised her head and looked seriously into her eyes. "Stay away from my elder brother in the future."
"Yes," Su Yuntang replied softly.
"He is not a good person. You are a newly married woman and do not understand the complexities of this household. My brother... just remember my words."
Su Yuntang felt a stir in her heart; she knew this was good advice, that Long Xi was looking out for her. She met Long Xi's gaze and said, "Husband, I know you are doing this for my sake. If you hadn't come to find me in time today, something might have happened. I thank you, Husband."
Long Xi was taken aback for a moment, seemingly not expecting her to be so candid, his expression softening slightly.
"I'm glad you understand. This household... is not like others. I am often not at home, so you must be careful."
"I understand." Su Yuntang nodded. "From now on, I will act cautiously and not cause trouble for you."
Long Xi looked at her clear eyes, his guard seeming to relax a little before he continued to lower his head to read.
"There's nothing more; you can go back and rest. Remember what I said."
"Yes, I take my leave." Su Yuntang curtsied and slowly exited the study.
Once outside the door, she secretly breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed that this fake Long Xi was wary of her but meant no harm; he might even protect her at crucial moments. This gave her a bit more peace of mind about the days to come.
The next morning, Su Yuntang was in the courtyard discussing lunch dishes with Liu Mama when she saw a maid in a stone blue dress hurriedly entering the courtyard, looking quite familiar.
The maid bowed and said, "Second Young Mistress, I am Wen Lan from Old Matriarch's side. The Old Matriarch has summoned you to Shou An Tang to speak with you right now."
Su Yuntang quickly stood up. "Understood, I will go right away. Mama, please come with me."
"Yes." Liu Mama nodded. "Second Young Mistress, do you want to change your clothes?"
Su Yuntang looked at the light lotus-colored robe she was wearing, which was still quite neat. "There's no need for that. Time is tight; we shouldn't keep Old Matriarch waiting."
As she made her way, Su Yuntang couldn't help but feel a bit anxious. Ever since entering the residence, although she had already paid her respects to the Old Matriarch and often visited to greet her, this was the first time she had been summoned alone by the Old Matriarch.
In the Shou An Tang, the air was filled with fragrant smoke. The Old Matriarch was reclining on a couch, and the maidservant Cui Zhu stepped aside as soon as she saw Su Yuntang enter.
"Granddaughter-in-law pays her respects to Grandmother," Su Yuntang said, bowing respectfully.
"Get up, Qing Xi. Come, sit closer," the Old Matriarch beckoned, patting the soft couch beside her.
Su Yuntang complied and sat down. The Old Matriarch scrutinized her carefully for a moment before speaking: "This old body of mine has been feeling sluggish lately, and I haven't been sleeping well at night. Since you have some knowledge of medicine, why not take a look for me?"
