Returning to the courtyard, she tidied her appearance in front of the bronze mirror and had Lu Ao rearrange her hair before heading to Long Xi's study.
Long Xi was busy with official matters when he saw her enter, and he set down his brush.
"My husband," Su Yuntang greeted as she bowed slightly.
"Please, sit," Long Xi gestured to a chair beside him. "I have something to discuss with you."
Su Yuntang complied and took a seat, noticing his serious expression, which made her feel uneasy. "What is it that you wish to say?"
"From now on, keep your distance from my elder brother," Long Xi stated bluntly. "He is not a good person."
"Why do you say that?"
Long Xi stood up and paced the room for a moment. "He is frivolous and of poor character. It is inappropriate for a woman like you to have too much contact with him."
"I understand," Su Yuntang replied, lowering her head, but inwardly she thought, if I keep my distance from Long Xiao, how will I learn about my sister's whereabouts?
"Also—" Long Xi sat down across from her, looking at her with a complex expression. "Have you heard any gossip recently? About my late sister-in-law?"
Su Yuntang's heart skipped a beat. "I haven't heard anything."
"She was a good person," Long Xi's voice was soft, tinged with melancholy. "Kind-hearted and amiable, never quarrelled with anyone. It's a pity that beauty is often fleeting; she passed away at such a young age..."
He didn't finish his sentence, but Su Yuntang could sense the genuine sorrow in his words. This man truly felt grief over her sister's death.
For a moment, her heart was filled with mixed emotions.
Before she could gather her thoughts, Long Xi looked at her again. "Later on, I will return to have dinner with you. Please make some preparations."
The summer days grew dark later than usual, and the courtyard was cool. Su Yuntang arranged for dinner to be served in the backyard.
This was Long Xi's first time dining in the courtyard with Su Yuntang, and the servants were quite pleased.
Liu Mama had been busy preparing everything early on. By the time Long Xi stepped into the backyard, the dishes were already being served.
There was Eight Treasure Duck, steamed bass, sliced lamb, crab meat tofu, and several seasonal side dishes filling the table.
Su Yuntang smiled brightly as she pulled out a chair for Long Xi and served him first.
"This crab meat tofu is a new recipe from the kitchen; please try it, my husband."
Long Xi took a bite and found it indeed delicious and tender. "The taste is truly remarkable."
"You should eat more," Long Xi said as he served soup to Su Yuntang. "You're too thin; you need to replenish your strength."
Such a considerate gesture made Su Yuntang feel somewhat uneasy. She secretly observed Long Xi's expression and noticed his gentle demeanor, which seemed genuine.
"Is your mood particularly good today, my husband?" she asked tentatively.
"What is there to be happy about?" Long Xi put down his chopsticks. "The affairs of this household are complicated, and business outside is not doing well. As a son, I always worry my father."
"You don't need to blame yourself so much. Although I don't understand matters outside, I can see from your daily actions that you are a responsible person," she replied.
Long Xi looked up at her, a hint of surprise flashing in his eyes. "You have quite a sweet tongue."
They exchanged smiles, and Su Yuntang thought to herself that although this false husband had an unknown background, he seemed to possess decent character—at least much better than that frivolous Eldest Young Master.
"By the way," Long Xi suddenly spoke up, "how has your health been lately? Are you getting used to life in the household?"
