"Sister-in-law is here!" Long Wanwan greeted as she approached, pulling her to sit on the embroidered stool. "Quick, try this; it’s just been made in the kitchen."
Su Yuntang sampled a few dishes and found them indeed refreshing and pleasant. "Everything is delicious. In this hot weather, eating these is the most comfortable."
"Exactly! It gets hotter every day." Long Wanwan scooped some mung bean paste with a small spoon, casually adding, "Sister-in-law just arrived and isn’t familiar with the household yet. Some people, you know, act one way in front of you but another behind your back. You have to be careful."
Su Yuntang felt a stir of curiosity. "What do you mean by that?"
Long Wanwan glanced around and lowered her voice. "Sister-in-law, let me share something from the heart, but you mustn't spread it outside."
"Of course not."
"It's about the Third Concubine; you need to be more vigilant." Long Wanwan’s face showed a hint of concern. "I overheard the maids gossiping that the Third Concubine harbors resentment towards you."
"Resentment?" Su Yuntang was puzzled. "I have no dealings with the Third Concubine; where would this resentment come from?"
"Oh, it's a long story." Long Wanwan sighed. "The Third Concubine has a niece from her family who is quite beautiful and talented. She has long wanted to match her with Second Brother and has been praising her in front of their father. Who would have thought she suddenly got engaged to the Hu Family? Now that you’ve entered the family, the Third Concubine’s plans have fallen through."
Su Yuntang understood now; it made sense.
"The Third Concubine has been unhappy about this," Long Wanwan continued. "She feels that you’ve taken away her niece's chance at marriage, so..."
"So she holds a grudge against me?" Su Yuntang interjected.
"Exactly." Long Wanwan nodded vigorously. "Just a few days ago, I heard her telling her maid that this Hu Family girl really knows how to charm Second Brother, making him completely infatuated."
Su Yuntang couldn’t help but chuckle inwardly. If the Third Concubine really said that, it was indeed a huge misunderstanding. There was nothing enchanting between her and Long Xi; they were merely pretending to be a couple for their own reasons.
"Sister-in-law, I’m not trying to sow discord by telling you this; I just want to remind you to be cautious." Long Wanwan's expression turned serious. "The Third Concubine has been in this household for many years and has many tricks up her sleeve. If she wants to harm someone, she has plenty of ways to do so."
"Thank you for the warning, Long Wanwan." Su Yuntang took her hand. "As a newcomer in this family, I rely on all of you for support."
"You don’t need to say that; we are family and should look out for each other." Long Wanwan smiled warmly. "If anything comes up in the future, just come find me."
After chatting for a while longer, Su Yuntang finally took her leave and headed back.
As she walked along the corridor, she pondered over Long Wanwan's words from earlier. This Fourth Miss seemed innocent but was actually quite perceptive. Was her mention of the Third Concubine today a genuine warning or did it hold another intention? Logically speaking, as a pampered young lady, she had no reason to get involved in such intrigues.
Unless... there is someone else behind her.
Su Yuntang returned to her courtyard and called for Hong Xiu. "Go find out what the Third Concubine has been up to these days. Is there anything unusual?"
"Yes, my lady."
It seems that no one in this household can be underestimated.
For several consecutive days, Long Wanwan came to chat with Su Yuntang almost every day, passing the time.
Today, just after Long Wanwan left, Su Yuntang gently caressed the tea cup in her hand. The warm porcelain pressed against her palm, yet it could not dispel the chill in her heart.
