"Second Young Mistress, what's wrong? You seem a bit distracted," Hong Xiu asked with concern as she squatted beside the low table, tidying up the tea set.
Su Yuntang snapped back to reality and gently placed the tea cup back on its tray. "It's nothing, just lost in thought."
In recent days, Long Wanwan had been acting as if she shared a deep sisterly bond, yet her words were laced with insinuations against the Third Concubine. However, upon reflection, Su Yuntang realized that most of what Long Wanwan said was hardly credible.
She claimed that the Third Concubine spoke ill of her in front of Madam Tai, but Su Yuntang had observed no change in Madam Tai's attitude towards her during their interactions. Long Wanwan also suggested that the Third Concubine secretly sent people to investigate her background, yet Su Yuntang had closely watched the servants and found no signs of anyone prying into her affairs.
On the contrary, Long Wanwan always returned with veiled questions, appearing concerned while actually probing for information.
"Lu Ao, go check if dinner is ready," Su Yuntang instructed as she stood up.
"Yes, I'll go right away," Lu Ao replied and left with a food box in hand.
Once alone with Hong Xiu, Su Yuntang lowered her voice. "Hong Xiu, do you think Fourth Miss has been visiting more frequently these days?"
Hong Xiu paused her actions and nodded thoughtfully. "Indeed. Although Fourth Miss used to visit occasionally, it’s not like now—she comes almost every day and stays for over an hour each time."
"Have you paid attention to what she talks about?"
Hong Xiu replied cautiously, "Mostly just casual conversations—asking how Second Young Mistress is feeling and if you’re settling well in the residence. But..." She hesitated for a moment. "I feel like Fourth Miss is particularly interested in matters concerning Third Concubine. Every time she speaks, she mentions Third Concubine—either about some pastries she made or something Third Concubine said to Madam Tai."
Su Yuntang nodded subtly; despite her youth, Hong Xiu was perceptive.
"Hong Xiu, what kind of person do you think Third Concubine is?"
After a moment of contemplation, Hong Xiu answered, "I haven't interacted much with her, but I've heard from the older servants that Third Concubine has a gentle temperament and rarely argues with anyone. After giving birth to the third young master, her status rose somewhat, yet she never became arrogant because of it. The people in the household don’t speak ill of her."
"And what about Madam Tai?"
Hong Xiu's expression turned cautious immediately. "Madam Tai... being the main wife naturally carries an air of authority."
Su Yuntang understood and chose not to press further. From Hong Xiu's words, she had already gleaned some insights.
The Third Concubine had a good reputation in the household and had given birth to Long Jin, which could indeed make Lady Long wary.
Before long, Lu Ao returned with a peculiar expression.
"Lu Ao, what’s wrong?" Su Yuntang noticed her unusual demeanor.
"Second Young Mistress, I overheard some gossip in the kitchen," Lu Ao said quietly after glancing around. "I heard the cook Wang Pozi mention that Madam has been in a bad mood lately and often takes it out on Fourth Miss, breaking quite a few things. Yet Fourth Miss keeps coming here every day and seems perfectly fine."
Su Yuntang understood the implications and waved her hand dismissively. "I see. You both can go rest now; I want some quiet time."
Seeing her serious expression, Hong Xiu and Lu Ao dared not say more and only reminded her to take care before exiting the room.
Su Yuntang sat alone by the window, resting her chin on her hand, pondering Lady Long's intentions. Lady Long had instructed her daughter to sow discord between her and the Third Concubine, and the purpose was clear: to incite suspicion and even conflict between them.
