Hong Xiu, who was tidying up outside, heard something was off and hurriedly lifted the curtain to come in. Seeing Su Yuntang's pale face, she quickly ran over. "Second Young Mistress, what’s wrong?"
"I feel extremely dizzy," Su Yuntang said, pressing one hand against her temple while using the other to steady herself on Hong Xiu's arm. "I couldn't sleep at all last night, tossing and turning, feeling as if a heavy stone is pressing down on my chest."
Hong Xiu supported her waist and carefully helped her to sit down by the chair. "I'll go call Lu Ao to brew a pot of tea to soothe you."
"Don't rush," Su Yuntang waved her hand and leaned back against the chair, appearing weak and weary. "Perhaps I've been too overworked these past few days, combined with this oppressive heat. A little rest will do."
As soon as she finished speaking, footsteps could be heard from outside.
Long Xi pushed aside the curtain and strode in. Upon seeing Su Yuntang looking unwell in the chair, he frowned. "What happened?"
"Second Young Mistress is feeling unwell," Hong Xiu quickly stood up to greet him.
Long Xi approached Su Yuntang and suddenly reached out to gently touch her forehead. "No fever. What else feels wrong?"
His hand was warm and dry, causing Su Yuntang's heart to skip a beat as she nearly forgot she was pretending to be ill.
"It's just a minor ailment, nothing serious," she said with a blush, lowering her gaze. "Actually, I've been feeling weak these days. Since I have some knowledge of medicine, I didn't think much of it and prescribed myself some medicine, but for some reason, there's been no improvement."
Long Xi's brow furrowed even deeper. "What symptoms do you have?"
"I just feel fatigued, my chest often feels tight, and I have trouble sleeping at night." She lowered her eyelashes further, her face growing even redder. "It might just be… a bit of heat exhaustion."
Long Xi's hand remained on her forehead. "How long have you had these symptoms?"
"Only about five or six days." Su Yuntang observed his expression closely and sensed something unusual. "Did you recall something, my husband?"
Long Xi did not answer directly but said, "You’ve taken three doses of medicine without improvement? With your medical knowledge, you shouldn't misdiagnose such a minor ailment."
Su Yuntang sighed lightly. "I also find it strange; logically speaking, these symptoms shouldn't be anything serious..."
In the following two days, Su Yuntang appeared increasingly "weakened." She had to lean on Hong Xiu or Lu Ao when walking and needed to stop to catch her breath after just a few steps.
Her appetite had diminished significantly; during meals, she would push away her bowl after only a few bites, even losing interest in her favorite osmanthus sweet lotus root.
Liu Mama and the two maidservants were anxious and flustered, while Long Xi grew increasingly worried.
On the third evening, Su Yuntang weakly picked at her dinner and set down her chopsticks after only half a bowl of porridge.
Long Xi sat across from her, observing her now gaunter face with a furrowed brow. "Is that all you're eating again?"
"I really have no appetite," Su Yuntang said softly as she rubbed her chest, feigning discomfort. "The smell of greasy food makes me want to vomit; even this plain porridge feels hard to swallow."
Long Xi put down his chopsticks and looked at her. "This won't do. Tomorrow, I will invite a doctor to take a look."
Su Yuntang shook her head. "There's no need to trouble you, my lord. I feel that this illness is rather peculiar, and an ordinary doctor might not be able to discern its nature."
Long Xi frowned. "What do you mean?"
Su Yuntang sighed softly. "I have heard the maids in the manor mention that there was once an Old Physician Xu here, whose medical skills were exceptional and who was particularly adept at treating women's ailments. However, I am not sure if he is still in Yangzhou."
