"No!" Old Physician Xu almost blurted out, "Those old maids are getting on in years and their memories are fading! The tea the Eldest Young Mistress drank before was just ordinary health tea, nothing special at all..."
He grew increasingly anxious, hurriedly finishing the prescription on the paper before rising to leave.
"Long Xi," stepped forward to take the prescription. "Old Xu, how should this be taken?"
"Three times a day, warm after meals. The Second Young Mistress's condition is not serious; she just needs proper care," he replied. Without looking back, Old Physician Xu added, "I have other matters to attend to; I must take my leave!"
As soon as he finished speaking, he strode out the door, his steps quick as if something were chasing him from behind.
The room fell silent for a moment. Su Yuntang quietly glanced at Long Xi, only to find him looking back at her. His deep-set eyes were like an ancient well, filled with a hint of inquiry. Feeling flustered, she quickly lowered her gaze.
Long Xi stared at her for a moment but ultimately said nothing more. He walked out of the room and called for Hong Xiu to take the prescription to get the medicine.
Only then did Su Yuntang let out a long breath, thinking to herself that Old Physician Xu surely knew something.
Since he was unwilling to reveal the truth, she would have to find another way.
Su Yuntang recalled that a few days ago at San Shaoye Long Jin's birthday banquet, the Third Concubine had invited her to visit often. However, due to Madam Tai's sudden illness, that plan had been postponed.
This Third Concubine was no ordinary person; her influence made Lady Long wary enough to send Long Wanwan to stir up trouble around her, indicating her unusual status.
Three days later, Su Yuntang's "illness" had greatly improved, and her complexion was gradually becoming rosy.
She changed into a light purple robe and donned a moon-white jacket over it. After Hong Xiu styled her hair into a simple hanging bun, she set off with Hong Xiu and Lu Ao towards Lanxin Courtyard.
Lanxin Courtyard was located in the southwest corner of the estate and was not very large. To Su Yuntang's surprise, it was quite elegantly arranged.
As soon as she entered, she saw several pots of orchid flowers hanging in the corridor, their faint fragrance wafting through the air. Through the half-closed flower window, Su Yuntang spotted the Third Concubine bent over her desk writing. Dressed in a dark green patterned robe with her black hair styled into a simple spiral bun, she held a brush in her hand and was writing something on rice paper.
Su Yuntang cleared her throat lightly. The Third Concubine looked up and upon seeing her, immediately broke into a smile. "Oh, Qing Xi has come! Come in and sit."
"Greetings to the Third Concubine." Su Yuntang performed a courtesy. "I hope you won't mind my impromptu visit."
"What are you saying? I’ve been looking forward to your visit!" The Third Concubine set down her brush and rose to greet her. "I heard you were ill a few days ago and wanted to come see you but feared I might disturb your peace."
The Third Concubine took Su Yuntang's hand and led her into the inner room. As Su Yuntang looked around, she couldn't help but be astonished.
There was an entire wall filled with bookshelves brimming with books. Several pieces of calligraphy and paintings hung on the walls; one bamboo stone painting had vigorous brushwork, and upon closer inspection of the signature in the lower right corner, it turned out to be by the renowned artist Shen Zhou of this dynasty.
"Third Concubine has exquisite taste," Su Yuntang praised sincerely.
With a faint smile, the Third Concubine said, "With nothing to do, I can only pass the time by reading and writing." She gestured for Su Yuntang to sit down. "It is the hot season now, and I have recently acquired some excellent Biluochun tea, which is particularly fragrant and refreshing."
As she spoke, she instructed a maid to set up the tea utensils on the stone table in the courtyard and brought over a selection of tea snacks, personally preparing the tea. The Third Concubine's movements were skilled and meticulous as she brewed the tea.
