A warm breath brushed past Su Yuntang's ear, causing her to instinctively take a step back, her back pressing against the edge of the dressing table. She could smell the faint scent of bamboo leaves on him, along with a masculine aura that quickened her heartbeat.
"I... I am your wife, Hu Qingxi. Why do you ask such a thing?"
"Hu Qingxi?" Long Xi chuckled softly. "Have you ever spoken a single truth to me?"
The hurt in his eyes made Su Yuntang's heart ache. She suddenly realized that she did not want to see that look on his face.
"I know you are not Hu Qingxi," he continued, his voice barely above a whisper, like a sigh. "I knew from the first night."
A torrent of inexplicable emotions surged within Su Yuntang. The tension from the banquet and the confrontation at this moment, along with those unspoken feelings, finally shattered her rational defenses.
She blurted out, "Then who are you? Are you really Second Young Master Long? The real Long Xi should have a burn scar on his neck!"
As soon as the words left her mouth, she regretted them.
Long Xi's pupils constricted slightly as he instinctively reached up to touch his neck.
"So... you started doubting me from the very first day," he said with a bitter smile. "We truly are a pair of false spouses."
His gaze dimmed as he looked at her, disappointment and bitterness tightening Su Yuntang's heart into a knot.
"Husband, I..." She wanted to explain something, but the words caught in her throat.
Long Xi gazed deeply at her before turning away and pushing open the door, leaving Su Yuntang standing alone in the room.
The candlelight flickered, casting her shadow against the wall, making her appear particularly lonely and desolate. She stared at the closed door, feeling an unprecedented emptiness and loss swell within her.
It was then that she realized she had begun to care about this man without even knowing when it had started.
Long Xi exited Guiyun Courtyard and headed straight for the study. He held a scroll of military strategies but found it impossible to focus on the text. The question "Then who are you? Are you really Second Young Master Long?" echoed repeatedly in his mind, leaving him restless.
It wasn't until midnight that Long Xi finally felt sleepy. Just as he closed his eyes, he heard panicked shouts from the courtyard:
"There's a flood! There's a flood! Guiyun Courtyard is flooding!"
He jolted upright and rushed to the window, only to see flames shooting up from the direction of the main house, thick smoke billowing like dark clouds.
Long Xi's heart raced as he hurriedly put on his shoes and ran toward the main house. Before he reached the door, he heard Hong Xiu and Lu Ao's anguished cries:
"The Second Young Mistress is still inside! The Second Young Mistress is still inside! Someone help! Save her!"
The main house of Guiyun Courtyard was now engulfed in flames, with orange tongues of fire wildly licking out from between the window frames. The green tiles on the roof crackled under the intense heat.
Thick smoke billowed, filling the air with the acrid scent of burning wood.
"Quick! Get water! Hurry!" The servants rushed around in a panic, carrying wooden buckets and copper basins, but that little water was nothing against the raging inferno.
"The main door is blocked!" a young servant shouted in alarm, his voice cracking. "The doors and windows won't budge!"
Long Xi focused his gaze and saw that the door latch had been tightly bound from the outside with hemp rope, the other end tied to a stone lion in the courtyard. The window bolts had also been secured with rope from outside, making it impossible for anyone to push them open.
Long Xi's fists clenched tightly; it was clear that someone had deliberately set this fire to trap those inside!
