Madam Tai had Cui Zhu tidy up the warm room on the east side of the main house, allowing Su Yuntang to recuperate there.
In her unconscious state, Su Yuntang had been running a high fever that refused to subside. Yang Fu Yi had treated her wounds and prescribed calming and antipyretic medicine, but the effects were minimal. Madam Tai was heartbroken and could not sleep through the night, so she chose to stay by her side.
The warm room was filled with a faint medicinal aroma. Su Yuntang lay in a deep slumber, her cheeks flushed like rouge, while the strands of hair on her forehead were damp with sweat, sticking to her burning skin. Liu Mama sat on a small stool at the bedside, clutching a wet cloth in her hand, occasionally wiping the beads of sweat from Su Yuntang's forehead. Lu Ao twisted a towel in a basin, while Hong Xiu monitored the medicinal pot in the small kitchen. The three took turns guarding her, not daring to relax for even a moment.
Madam Tai sat by the bed, gently stroking Su Yuntang's hand with her calloused fingers, sighing softly, "Why does this child have to suffer so much? She has barely entered our home and already faced such calamity..."
Cui Zhu entered with a freshly brewed medicinal soup and noticed that Madam Tai had hardly slept through the night. She couldn't help but gently advise, "Madam Tai, you should return to your room and rest. If you keep this up, your health won't hold out either. Second Young Mistress is in our care; she will be fine."
"How can I sleep?" Madam Tai shook her head, wiping the corners of her eyes with a cloth. "Smoke inhalation and shock have harmed her spirit; this is no ordinary illness."
Just then, Lady Long arrived. The main house of Guiyun Courtyard had been completely destroyed; it was now a pile of ruins. She had spent most of the night assessing the damage and had only just found time to check on Su Yuntang's condition.
Standing at the threshold, Lady Long scanned the room before walking directly towards Madam Tai.
"Mother, it’s not wise for you to stay here like this. The main house of Guiyun Courtyard is utterly ruined; half of the beams have collapsed and it will take time to repair. Why not let Qing Xi and the others move to another courtyard temporarily? I think Luo Xia Pavilion would be quite peaceful."
Madam Tai lifted her eyelids and shot her a glance. "Which courtyard is quieter than mine? Luo Xia Pavilion is right next to yours; maids and servants come and go all day long—there's no place for peace there! Besides, in her current state, she can't endure such upheaval."
Lady Long felt rebuffed and was somewhat displeased but still smiled politely. "What you say is true; I didn’t consider it thoroughly..."
After a moment of silence, Madam Tai’s eyes suddenly brightened.
Indeed, Qing Xi needed peace for recovery; speaking of tranquility...
She turned to Lady Long beside her. "By the way, I have several estates outside the city. Xi Xia Mountain Villa is quite nice—surrounded by mountains and water, with serene surroundings and fresh air; it's perfect for recuperation."
"Xi Xia Mountain Villa?" Lady Long frowned slightly. "Mother, that place is over twenty miles from the manor! What if something urgent comes up? The round trip would take too long..."
"The remoteness is precisely what makes it good!" Madam Tai interrupted her with a wave of her hand. "This manor is crowded with people and noise—there's no quiet place for recovery here! What this child needs right now is peace."
She glanced at Long Xi who was just entering from outside. "Moreover, this young couple can cultivate their relationship there without being estranged from each other day after day."
Lady Long wanted to argue further, but Madam Tai had already slapped the armrest of her chair decisively.
"That's settled then! As soon as she recovers from her fever, we will move them to Xi Xia Mountain Villa immediately. Cui Zhu, go arrange it now! Have someone clean up both inside and outside Xi Xia Mountain Villa—repair what needs fixing and replace what needs replacing."
