Fortunately, after the examination, the doctor said there was nothing serious, just a bit of gastroenteritis, possibly from eating something unclean. However, seeing that I was alone, the doctor insisted I stay for observation overnight.
As dawn approached, Ma Yuqiang finally called. He sounded anxious.
"Wife, where have you been?"
I glanced at the clock in the emergency room; it was seven-thirty. At that moment, I realized I hadn't been home, which meant he hadn't returned all night.
I countered his question, "Where have you been?"
Ma Yuqiang hesitated and stammered that he had been at home and hadn't seen me. I didn't call him out on it; instead, I simply told him I was at the hospital.
Before long, Ma Yuqiang arrived at the hospital. The doctor scolded him for not taking care of me, saying he hadn’t noticed I was unwell in the middle of the night. Ma Yuqiang kept apologizing profusely.
On the way home, he rambled an explanation: "Last night, clients kept calling. I was worried about disturbing your rest, so I went out to handle it."
I casually asked, "What were you handling all night?"
Ma Yuqiang became even more flustered. "Mainly... later on, I was afraid opening the door would wake you up, so I just booked a room nearby to rest."
"Oh, that must have been tough for you," I said flatly.
Since becoming pregnant, my sense of smell had become particularly acute.
Ma Yuqiang carried a scent of perfume. The sweet fragrance of Dior J'adore made me want to sneeze. Not to mention that I was pregnant now; even before, I wouldn't have worn such strong perfume. But I didn't confront him. Without evidence, there was no need to alert him.
After Ma Yuqiang went to work, I called my best friend, Li Shan, and shared my suspicions. Li Shan was surprised. After all, in others' eyes, I was tall and beautiful, had a good job with a high income, and marrying Ma Yuqiang was seen as a step down.
I chuckled bitterly to myself. I didn't want to doubt Ma Yuqiang either. But that belt and the perfume scent made me think twice. Li Shan's husband was a doctor, so I asked her to help me get some sleeping pills. She was startled, thinking I might be having dark thoughts. I laughed and said, "With my personality, even if I killed Ma Yuqiang, I wouldn’t consider suicide. I just want him to sleep so I can check his phone."
Only then did Li Shan feel relieved. The next day, after getting the sleeping pills, I called Ma Yuqiang and asked him to come home early for dinner because I had prepared something delicious. Although he agreed, he didn’t arrive until after nine o'clock that night. During that time, there wasn’t a single call or message from him to let me, a pregnant woman, know to eat first.
I felt utterly disheartened. When he walked in and saw the untouched food on the table, he froze for a moment. Then he smiled and came over to hug me. "Wife, you waited for me so late? You’re pregnant; you should eat first!"
I pushed him gently and said, "It's fine, let's eat together."
He patted my belly and replied, "Perfect timing, I'm hungry too."
As I caught a whiff of the hot pot aroma clinging to him and glanced at his slightly protruding belly and tight belt, I concluded that he had just finished a meal.
Xiao Ran has always been quite strict about managing his figure; unless he had just eaten, his belly wouldn't bulge like that.
Now he was actually lying about it.
I couldn't help but smirk inwardly as I continued to serve him food.
The dishes piled up like little mountains. At first, Ma Yuqiang could handle it, but soon he was forced to stuff himself.
I pretended not to notice.
As soon as he slowed down, I immediately added more food onto his plate, sweetly coaxing him to eat more:
"You've worked so late, you deserve a good meal."
"Honey, try this; I made it just for you."
Whenever I saw him hesitating to stop, I switched tactics:
"What's wrong? Don't you love me anymore? You used to love these dishes."
"I’m telling you, for your health, you need to eat more."
"Why are you eating so little today? You didn't eat out before coming home, did you?"
Naturally, Ma Yuqiang wouldn’t dare to admit it.
