Returning to the office for overtime, I called Lin Yuan just before closing time, but the call was disconnected. At that moment, Sun Xin approached and asked if I needed a ride home. I shook my head and replied, "No need, I have to pick up my boyfriend."
Sun Xin looked at me for a moment, then sighed and reminded me to be careful. His expression left me a bit puzzled, but I simply responded, "Be safe on the road," before hailing a cab to find Lin Yuan.
As expected, Lin Yuan had not yet returned home. When I arrived at the entrance of the club, I saw Chen Zhixuan and another guy supporting him on either side, with Yu Lan following closely behind.
Upon seeing me, Yu Lan's expression changed immediately, her eyes filled with caution. Chen Zhixuan and the other guy seemed to relax and handed Lin Yuan over to me. I steadied Lin Yuan and wiped the sweat from his face, smiling at Chen Zhixuan as I said, "I knew you guys wouldn't be done yet. Since I couldn't reach Lin Yuan by phone, I came directly."
Chen Zhixuan scratched his head, a slight blush on his face, clearly having had a bit to drink as well. Suddenly, Yu Lan spoke up with a hint of confusion: "Are you Guan Yue?"
I turned to look at her as she pulled out Lin Yuan's phone from her bag and awkwardly smiled. "I'm sorry, I didn't know who you were. When you called earlier, I thought it was some girl. Since he has a girlfriend, I hung up."
The guy next to her instantly looked a bit uncomfortable. I shrugged it off with a smile: "It's fine; now you know who I am. Thank you for taking care of him today."
With that, I said no more and helped Lin Yuan into the car. Ever since Yu Lan returned, Lin Yuan had rarely been home, always out having fun. Sometimes when I came back from working late, the food on the table remained untouched.
I hadn’t asked about it or gotten angry; instead, I stopped cooking for him and opted for takeout instead. During this time, Sun Xin had been busy with a big project. To save time, he waited for me at the entrance of our community every morning so we could discuss work in the car.
At first, I thought it was unnecessary. I suggested that he could get up earlier to arrive sooner, but he said it was on the way, so I didn't oppose it any further. To be honest, I didn't want to squeeze onto the bus for work either.
For a long time, I had almost no communication with Lin Yuan; we hadn't even messaged each other on WeChat. Then, two days before the National Day holiday, while I was revising a proposal with Sun Xin, Lin Yuan suddenly called me. His voice was muffled, and it took me a while to understand him. He said he was drunk and asked me to pick him up.
Just as I was about to ask for his address, I heard a commotion on the other end of the line, followed by Yu Lan's voice: "Sorry, he's drunk. If you don't mind, let him stay at my place tonight; I'll take care of him."
A slight smile crept onto my lips. "I don't mind; thank you."
Yu Lan replied, "Guan Yue, aren't you worried about me and Zhou Wei doing something? He still has feelings for me."
I laughed even more brightly. "Miss Yu, who doesn't know that Zhou Wei has a girlfriend now? If you really did something..."
I didn't finish my sentence, but I knew she understood. Her tone noticeably cooled down. "Don't worry; I'll take good care of him." With that, she hung up.
Sun Xin stood beside me, looking astonished. "Aren't you worried at all? Letting your boyfriend sleep at another woman's house?"
I countered her question: "Would you let someone you like sleep at someone else's house?"
In that moment, I clearly saw the amusement in Sun Xin's eyes.
During the National Day holiday, Zhou Wei and I finally met. He hadn't gone out, and neither had I. While I was cooking in the kitchen, he suddenly hugged me from behind and said, "I'm sorry for sleeping at Nian Yin's place that night. Don't misunderstand; we’re just classmates who hadn't seen each other in years."
I turned off the stove and hugged him back. "It's okay; it's my fault for being too busy. Otherwise, I would have come to pick you up that day."
