I didn’t give him a good look. “Zhou Wei, a good horse doesn’t turn back to eat the grass it once grazed on. Do you really love me, or are you just used to me?”
Zhou Wei was about to retort when Sun Xin interrupted, “Zhou Wei, you should learn to get used to being alone. After all, you can’t always be thinking about someone else’s girlfriend, right?”
Sun Xin walked over and casually wrapped his arm around my shoulders.
Zhou Wei looked at us in shock, speechless. I pursed my lips and didn’t pull away from Sun Xin’s grip. I noticed he was still wearing the shoes I had given him, and I frowned as I said, “Since you can’t bear to throw those things away, just transfer the money to me so we can settle this.”
Zhou Wei stared at us for a long time, his hands tightening and then loosening. In the end, he simply said “Okay” before turning and leaving.
His back looked desolate, like a homeless stray dog.
Sun Xin and I turned to leave. He kept smiling, and once we were upstairs and sure Zhou Wei couldn’t see us anymore, he finally let go of me and said, “You didn’t argue with me just now.”
I paused while opening the door and nodded helplessly. “Yeah, I didn’t argue with you.”
Sun Xin asked, “Does that mean I can be your boyfriend now?”
I didn’t answer right away; instead, I put the dishes in the kitchen and shot him a playful glance. “What do you think I invited you over for dinner today?”
Sun Xin was so happy that he kissed my cheek and hugged me from behind, saying, “Thank you.”
Hearing that made my heart ache a little. I removed his hands from around my waist and looked into his eyes. “Sun Xin, I think we can give this a try. I have feelings for you; you don’t need to thank me.”
Sun Xin smiled and pinched my cheek. “Alright then, girlfriend.”
After Sun Xin and I got together, Zhou Wei never bothered me again. One day, I suddenly found an unexpected amount of money in my bank account—it was transferred by Zhou Wei.
Later, I heard that Zhou Wei and Yu Lan had been together for a while, but they broke up quickly, and then Yu Lan went abroad.
After that, Zhou Wei started dating another girl, who I heard resembled both me and Yu Lan to some extent.
I didn’t think much of it as I watched Sun Xin busying himself in the kitchen, a wave of satisfaction washing over me.
Sun Xin turned around and smiled at me, “Why are you staring at me?”
I pondered for a moment before asking, “When did you start liking me?”
Sun Xin didn’t answer right away; he continued with his tasks.
It wasn’t until we sat down at the dining table that he said, “A long time ago, even longer than Zhou Wei.”
My hand paused mid-motion as I looked at him in confusion.
Sun Xin served me a piece of fish, saying, “In the school cafeteria, when you were arguing with the cafeteria lady over a piece of fish; when I saw you studying earnestly in the library; when I watched you running on the playground.”
With each memory he shared, a pang of bittersweetness filled my heart, and my eyes began to well up.
Then Sun Xin said, “Guan Yue, I started my business for you.”
I froze, tears streaming down my face as I stared at him in shock.
He explained that his family was not well-off and he feared I wouldn’t like him because he couldn’t provide a good life for me, so he decided to start a business.
By the time he achieved some success, I was already with Zhou Wei.
Later, when I interviewed at his company, it was only after learning about my breakup with Zhou Wei that he decided to pursue me.
My eyes grew redder as I said, “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
Sun Xin seemed flustered and quickly came over to comfort me, “We’re together now; we didn’t miss our chance.”
I sobbed softly, “But…”
Sun Xin wiped away the tears from the corners of my eyes. “There’s no ‘but,’ Guan Yue; we won’t miss out on each other. Don’t cry.”
I nodded and fell into his embrace.
I had taken many wrong turns along the way, only to realize that he had always been waiting for me, watching over me.
