"Miss Ma, do you know how much Jiang Fan doesn't want to go back home?"
"Oh? How much?"
A smirk appeared on her lips, her eyes filled with sarcasm.
"He would rather work overtime at the office or drink at a club. Do you know? Every day when he gets home, he spends half an hour smoking in the car before going upstairs."
"Miss Ma, actually, my relationship with Jiang Fan isn't as sordid as you think. He just wants to steal a moment of peace here. He’s under so much pressure, and I provide him a place to relax. Do you really want to strip away his last bit of space?"
"Miss Ma, you've made your husband not even want to come home. What a failure you must be as a wife!"
"Did you hear that?" I suddenly spoke up.
"What?" Yang Fang looked confused.
I raised my phone and said to the person on the other end, "Jiang Fan, did you hear what your little girl said?"
There was silence on the line.
I continued, "I can't imagine how devastated I would be if I still loved you and heard those words. But fortunately, I no longer love you. Jiang Fan, I don't love you anymore. Let's get a divorce as soon as possible!"
"I'll give you two days to think it over. If I don't get the answer I want, I'll file for divorce."
That day, Jiang Fan didn't have dinner at Yang Fang's place.
When he returned home, both Jia Jia and Aunt Chen were startled and quickly added two more dishes to the table.
At dinner, Jia Jia excitedly chattered about her kindergarten adventures.
Jiang Fan rarely reminded her not to talk while eating.
After dinner, we all played games together with Jia Jia.
She pulled Jiang Fan to look at the storybook she cherished, and finally fell asleep contentedly.
As we stepped out of Jia Jia's room, we walked to the living room in silent agreement. This time, Jiang Fan spoke first.
"Hui Hui, there are some things I don’t know how to say to you. I can vent a few words to a stranger like Yang Fang instead."
"Hui Hui, there’s really nothing between Yang Fang and me. Our relationship can be seen as a transaction."
"I help her, and she serves as my emotional dumping ground, that’s all."
"I don’t want to bring negative emotions home and burden you with them. I always think that as long as I can steal a moment of peace in this chaotic life, when I get home, I’m still Ma Hui's good husband."
Men and women seem to be on different wavelengths forever. Once, I hoped Jiang Fan would open his heart to me. But he was always reluctant to share, even thinking I was neurotic. Now, as he began to bare his soul, I felt disgusted.
"Jiang Fan, can we not talk about this? What have you thought about the divorce I mentioned?"
My stubbornness irritated Jiang Fan.
"Why must it be divorce? Just tell me what to change!"
I didn’t understand either. "Why don’t you agree to the divorce? You heard what Yang Fang said today; she has feelings in that regard."
"Once we break through that barrier, everything else will follow naturally."
"Isn’t your current life boring? Isn’t divorce the best option?"
My words were too blunt. A rare look of distress crossed Jiang Fan's face. He clenched his fists, turned away his gaze, and growled, "I never thought about divorce!"
I leaned back slightly.
"You really need to think this through, Jiang Fan. Our bond runs deep."
"The relationship between our families is here, and there are many entanglements in the project, along with various investments. Most importantly, we have Jia Jia."
"If we can part on good terms, let's not wait until things get ugly; that would be too embarrassing."
"I'm genuinely suggesting that if you want to stray, you should get a divorce first."
"I've told you, I never thought about divorce, and I won't cheat. Why don't you believe me?"
My patience was gradually wearing thin.
"What will it take for you to agree to a divorce?"
Jiang Fan gritted his teeth. "I won't get a divorce!"
"Why not?"
"Because I love you!"
His words made me close my eyes.
I clenched my jaw tightly.
