I rushed out the door and hailed a cab, heading straight for the hotel. On the way, I dialed Cui Xiangjun's number and unleashed a torrent of curses. 0

“Cui Xiangjun, you bastard! What did you do to my wife yesterday?” 0

“Huh?” Cui Xiangjun replied lazily, sounding confused. 0

“What do you mean, what? It was all part of the normal process. Were you asleep or something? By the way, did you sleep well last night?” 0

He sounded indifferent, as if this was no big deal at all. His words left me bewildered. Could it be that President Ma had colluded with them and willingly participated in stealing my wedding night? If it was an accident, that would be one thing, but if it had been premeditated, I wouldn’t be able to explain things to Jiao Li at all. 0

“Cut the crap! I’m asking you a serious question! What did you do to Jiao Li yesterday?” I shouted in fury. 0

“Tch, can’t you just go see for yourself? She’s at my hotel,” Cui Xiangjun said before hanging up. 0

I burst into the hotel room, and chaos greeted me. The place was a mess, food scraps littered the floor, and there were broken bottles and shards of glass everywhere. Jiao Li was curled up on the bed like a frightened kitten, her clothes clearly torn. 0

I kicked aside the debris and rushed over to hold her in my arms. 0

“Jiao Li! Jiao Li!” I called softly. 0

She trembled as she clung to me, bursting into tears while asking frantically, “Xiao Fan, is what they said true? Did you and President Ma...?” 0

“What did they say? Don’t listen to their nonsense!” I denied vehemently, though my voice betrayed a hint of panic. 0

“By the way, why didn’t you call me sooner? What did they do to you?” 0

“They wouldn’t let me call. They said it’s a rule here that on the wedding night we have to sleep separately to test loyalty…” 0

I had heard of this ridiculous custom before, but most places had abolished it. I never expected my hometown to be so backward and so vulgar. 0

"Did you really believe their nonsense?" 0

"I did. My mom told me the same thing." 0

Jiao Li sobbed. "She said that if we get through this, we will definitely be happy together for the rest of our lives. If we don't, at least we'll feel a sense of loss, even if it's just a psychological compensation, and we might still have a few warm years after marriage." 0

"What kind of twisted logic is that? We work in the city; we've seen so much. You're not someone who just goes along with everything—how could you be confused at a time like this?" 0

I began to blame her, but in reality, I was just masking my own guilt. 0

I didn't know whether Jiao Li had truly given in, but I knew that I had crossed a line with Ma Shishi. 0

"So you really haven't been with President Ma..." 0

"No!" 0

I denied it again. 0

"Neither have I! So does that mean we've passed this test?" 0

Jiao Li revealed a long-lost smile. Since the day she was taken for the wedding, she had been weighed down by worries, and during the wedding festivities, she had cried several times out of embarrassment. Yet I could sense a hint of suspicion behind her smile. 0

Wasn't I feeling the same? The apartment we bought in the city was still under renovation, so Jiao Li and I temporarily moved back to a rental near the company. Our interactions with Cui Xiangjun and her group of classmates hadn't gone very well, which also served as an explanation for Jiao Li. 0

"We're never going back..." Whenever Jiao Li brought it up, her body would tremble uncontrollably. 0

"We won't go back. Once the house is ready, we'll bring our parents over to live with us." 0

"Ah? Didn't you say we should wait a while before considering the two of us?" 0
"My mom's health isn't good, and she's really worried about the wedding," I pleaded with Jiao Li. 0
"I want her to enjoy a few days of happiness; we can send her back once she's feeling better." 0
"No way!" Jiao Li suddenly protested sharply. 0
"If you let your mom come, then I'll bring my mom over!" 0
"What are you talking about? How can a mother-in-law stay at her son-in-law's house?" 0
"What? Is a married daughter no longer part of the family? That's my home, not just yours!" 0
This was the first time Jiao Li had been so unreasonable. 0
But since this matter concerned my mother's well-being, I couldn't back down. 0
