“Enough, enough, just one last question…”
I raised my hands in surrender.
“Are your legs still sore? Which part do you want me to massage? Your thighs or your calves?”
“Pfft…”
Ma Shishi stifled a laugh and scolded, “Get lost!”
This day had been exhausting.
As the team leader, I was running around handling business while also assisting other leaders with their inquiries.
Ma Shishi would occasionally come out to “inspect,” but she wasn’t checking on business; she was focused on cleanliness, especially the area within three meters of me.
I really wanted to suggest hiring a sanitation officer.
After finally making it through the workday, Ma Shishi asked me to accompany her to dinner with a client.
“Boss, I just got married; can’t I have a few days off?”
Once everyone had left, I began to complain.
“If you don’t go, I’m dropping this client, and you’ll be responsible for the loss.”
She looked serious.
“I’ll take responsibility if I must, but I’m broke anyway!”
“You just got a raise a few days ago; how are you broke already?”
“I handed it all over.”
I maintained a straight face.
“I thought so! No wonder you bring lunch every day; can’t even afford takeout anymore?”
“That’s a care package; single people wouldn’t understand!”
“Whose care package consists of steamed buns, pickled vegetables, and shredded potatoes?”
Ma Shishi rolled her eyes at me.
"Either work overtime or give me back the money I spent on the house."
"I... wherever the boss goes, I'm right behind with my bag!"
In the next moment, I obediently slipped into her office.
It wasn't about accompanying clients; Ma Shishi was simply taking me out to improve my meals.
In the private room of the high-end seafood restaurant, Ma Shishi kept serving me food.
"Flattering for no reason, either a thief or a schemer," I mumbled with my mouth full of crab meat.
"Eat if you want, or don't if you don't..."
Her voice suddenly stopped. I was waiting for her to finish that "get lost" remark when I looked up and saw her staring intently behind me.
I quickly turned around and saw a handsome young man squatting at the restaurant entrance tying a girl's shoelaces.
The girl leaned down and whispered something in his ear, then raised her hand and slapped him.
That slap felt like it landed on my own face.
I recognized that girl; her name was Jiao Li...
I stood up to go over, but Ma Shishi grabbed me and shook her head.
"We'll talk about it later at home; right now, eat!"
Reluctantly, I sat back down at the table, my heart in turmoil.
The food in my mouth tasted like cardboard; I had no idea how I finished that meal.
After Ma Shishi paid the bill and dropped me off at home, she warned me, "Be rational; don't act impulsively."
How could I not be impulsive? The sound of the door slamming echoed through the entire hallway.
"Lu Xiaofan, have you lost your mind?" Jiao Li jumped in shock, dropping her cup to the floor where it shattered into pieces.
Fear turned into anger.
"Who was that guy tying your shoelaces at the restaurant entrance?"
"My brother; what's it to you?" she replied sharply.
"I had no idea you had a brother."
"Why should I tell you?"
Brother? Jiao Li clearly comes from a single-parent family; even if there is a distant brother, they shouldn't be that close.
"Hah, you have quite a few secrets from me."
"Lu Xiaofan, have you had enough of this? Don't think I don't know that you and President Ma are involved. Haven't you been hiding that from me?"
Now that the truth was out, I didn't want to keep hiding things anymore.
"We're just colleagues and friends; what do you mean 'involved'? But you, how did this ambiguous brother suddenly appear? How many more brothers like him do you have?"
"We're also siblings and friends. If it's okay for you to have one, why can't I?"
I was left speechless by the retort.
After knowing each other for half a year and rushing into marriage, there were indeed too many things we didn't understand about each other. In the heat of romance, we only saw each other's good sides.
But what about after marriage? All the unpleasantness was laid bare; were the expectations we once had still so fervent?
"Do you love me, or do you love the sense of security I provide, or is it something else, like money..." The anger was extinguished, and I suddenly felt calm.
