In the Western restaurant, the needle of the gramophone gently glided over the grooves of the record, and from the brass horn poured forth the melodious voice of the popular singer Zhou Xuan, singing "Tian Ya Ge Nu," her sweet and delicate vibrato captivating all who listened.
A woman dressed in a lake-blue qipao stood up and walked toward the stairs. The fitted qipao accentuated her exquisite curves, and her slender waist swayed with an alluring grace. As she reached the top of the stairs, she unexpectedly collided with a young couple coming up, unable to dodge in time and bumping into the female companion beside the man.
"Oh dear." The woman swayed like a delicate willow in the wind, just as she was caught in the arms of an exceptionally handsome man. In her surprise, one of her buttons popped open, revealing her smooth skin. She shyly met the man's gaze and said sweetly, "Thank you, sir. You really scared me."
"Zhao Shanxing, let her go," the female companion exclaimed angrily upon seeing her boyfriend embracing a stranger.
"I'm no longer interested in you; you can leave," Zhao Shanxing coldly reprimanded his companion.
"How can you treat me like this?" she cried, covering her face as she walked away.
Zhao Shanxing turned his gaze back to the woman in his arms and said softly, "Miss, shall we have a meal together?"
"Sure, I’d love to," she replied coyly, casting him a sultry glance that seemed to pierce through to his very soul.
Ruan Tingyu shuddered at the scene unfolding before her. Was she really going to seduce Zhao Shanxing like that? Oh my, she truly didn’t want to, but if this mission failed again, Madam Lu would make her life miserable. Taking a deep breath, she picked up her fork and finished off the last piece of steak on her plate. After swallowing it down, she felt so full that there was hardly room for a burp; she had deliberately worn a smaller-sized qipao today to make her bony figure appear more curvaceous.
Hearing laughter like silver bells from downstairs, Ruan Tingyu knew that her target, Zhao Shanxing, had finally appeared. She quickly grabbed her pearl-encrusted handbag and hurried toward the staircase, intentionally allowing Zhao Shanxing's female companion to bump into her as per her planned scenario.
The young heir of Zhao's Company was quite handsome and so much younger than those old men who only knew how to take advantage of others. Ruan Tingyu stole glances at Zhao Shanxing while making her way toward his female companion.
"Like a delicate willow," Ruan Tingyu silently recited the four words Madam Lu had taught her. The female companion was half a head taller than her; it would be easy for her to knock Ruan Tingyu down. As she pondered how to subtly place her hand on the button while pretending not to yield, Ruan Tingyu deliberately collided with the woman coming from the opposite direction.
“Ah!” The woman's scream echoed throughout the entire Western restaurant.
Ruan Tingyu found herself falling into Zhao Shanxing's embrace, but the “ah” was not her own. Without thinking too much, she quickly smiled weakly and said, “Thank you, sir. You really scared me!”
Huh? What kind of look was that? It had nothing to do with tenderness; it felt more like he was looking at an idiot.
It was so quiet, eerily quiet, that it gave her an ominous feeling. Shouldn't his female companion be screaming for him to let her go? Where was she? Ruan Tingyu tilted her head to look around.
Oh my goodness, Ruan Tingyu had completely collapsed onto Zhao Shanxing, and she could see that the female companion was lying on the landing at the bottom of the stairs, rolling her eyes.
“What is she doing there?” Ruan Tingyu asked Zhao Shanxing with a stiff smile.
“Not only does the lady have poor eyesight, but it seems her brain isn’t functioning well either. Didn’t you just recklessly knock my girlfriend down the stairs?” Zhao Shanxing replied coldly.
Heavens, what did it mean to be as fragile as a willow in the wind? This was true fragility! She hadn’t even pushed hard. Just as Ruan Tingyu was feeling conflicted, suddenly the arm around her back retracted.
“Ah—” She fell to the ground. “Hey, you should at least make a sound when you let go!”
Zhao Shanxing looked down at her from above, his sharp gaze making her wish she could roll down the stairs herself. After receiving a kick to her waist, he said sternly, “Stop playing dead. Do you want to go to the police station first or to the hospital? Choose your destination.”
