Wang Hui was not the least bit annoyed; instead, he leisurely said, "Think carefully. The child is still young. Can you, as a woman, take care of a child on your own?"
My mother-in-law interjected, "You're nothing but a useless person. If it weren't for my son, would you be living in such a high-end neighborhood? You want a divorce? Dream on."
Their mocking gazes and sarcastic words told me clearly that they did not believe I would actually go through with the divorce from Wang Hui.
Wang Hui indeed had savings; even after being dismissed from his job, his bank account was enough for him to live comfortably. This gave him confidence, making him think that even if I knew about his infidelity, I wouldn't dare to leave him.
I ran out like a madwoman, wandering aimlessly around the community, my dignity and anger boiling over. I didn't know who to confide in about my pain, so I called my best friend, Qin Qin: "I want a divorce. I don't want anything; I just want to leave."
Qin Qin was silent for a moment before hurriedly saying she was busy and hung up. I didn't dwell on it too much. After wandering outside for a while, I decided to go home and pack my things.
I didn't want to stay in that house for another second. But as soon as I stepped inside, I got hit on the head.
My mother-in-law swung a spatula directly at my forehead: "You wicked woman! How dare you report my son for cheating? If it weren't for you, my son wouldn't be paralyzed! I'll kill you!"
She raised the spatula again and swung it at me. The pain made me jump up and grab her spatula: "Your son brought this upon himself! What does it have to do with me?"
I pushed her down to the ground and turned to go back inside to pack my things.
My mother-in-law got back up and rushed into the kitchen, grabbing a kitchen knife before charging at me with it, aiming to stab my daughter. Without thinking, I rushed forward to seize the knife from her. The blade was sharp and cut across my hand, blood dripping down.
"You ruined my son, so I'll ruin your daughter. You want a divorce? No way!"
My mother-in-law was like a madwoman, her eyes wide and the kitchen knife in her hand glinting ominously.
Blood droplets stained the floor, and my daughter cried loudly in my arms.
I locked eyes with my mother-in-law, and it felt as if sparks were flying in the air.
"I'm old and can't control you, but you follow your daughter. Once she starts school, I'll seize the opportunity to take my revenge."
"You are not allowed to divorce; you will take care of my son until he stands up again," my mother-in-law said, enunciating each word clearly.
"I won't ask for a single penny; isn't that enough?"
"You still want money? Do you believe I would kill you?"
My mother-in-law slammed the door shut, making my ears ring with pain.
The sting on the back of my hand finally registered.
My daughter's little face was pale and sweetly asleep.
Standing in this once warm room, I felt utterly helpless.
From that day on, my mother-in-law seemed to have set her sights on me.
She threatened me with my daughter's safety.
Should I call the police? But she hadn't truly harmed my daughter; I couldn't be there to protect her all the time.
I could only endure for now and wait for an opportunity.
A question lingered in my mind: how did my mother-in-law and Wang Hui know about the police report? Only I and Qin Qin knew about it.
Wang Hui claimed he saw the call log on my phone.
But I always felt there was more to it than that.
And what about Qin Qin? Ever since our last conversation, we had hardly been in touch. What was she doing?
During this time, Wang Hui and I remained at a stalemate.
Since he found out that I called the police, he has never treated me well again.
Cursing and hitting me have become a daily routine.
What’s even more disgusting is that Wang Hui has started to become perverted.
His self-esteem issues, stemming from his inadequacies, lead him to make me perform strange acts to please him.
When I can’t do it, he throws things and even points at me, shouting: “You filthy woman! If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be like this! Hurry up and get down on your knees, stick your butt up!”
I could no longer endure it and rushed out of the house.
My mother-in-law didn’t stop me from leaving because my daughter was still home; she knew I wouldn’t go far.
To escape that suffocating home, I wandered outside for a long time before returning.
As soon as I reached the front door, I found my mother-in-law was not there, and my daughter was asleep.
But then I heard a series of ambiguous moans coming from the bedroom…
