The sturdy city gates opened and closed repeatedly.
The challenge from the Rabbit Corps stirred the werewolves into a frenzy, their greedy eyes gleaming as the sound of whistles echoed through the ranks, as if they could already taste the most succulent meat awaiting them.
However, this only ignited the fighting spirit of the Rabbit Corps. With red cloth strips tied around their heads bearing the words "Victory is Certain," they donned their armor and brandished sharp spears, charging fearlessly toward the werewolves, defiantly challenging their fate.
The commander, Bai Xiao Tu, glanced back at Lan Ruo standing on the city wall. The distance was too great for her to see his expression, but to Bai Xiao Tu, Lan Ruo was a steadfast presence, as solid as a rock.
"Charge!"
Accompanied by the sound of clashing weapons, the two armies quickly became entangled in battle. The werewolves, towering and robust compared to the frail rabbits, gained the upper hand in close combat. In terms of sorcery, the Rabbit Corps, caught off guard, could not match the werewolves' ruthless ferocity.
As it became evident that the rabbit soldiers were gradually being overwhelmed, Bai Xiao Tu dodged a sweeping attack from a werewolf's crescent blade and shouted, "Run!"
In an instant, the rabbit soldiers abandoned their armor and sprinted away with remarkable speed, trained to retreat swiftly. Their escape left the werewolves momentarily stunned and exchanging glances.
Bai Xiao Tu wanted to flee with her comrades too, but suddenly felt a cold sensation against her neck that froze her in place. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of a sharp blade. "Princess," came a familiar voice.
"I didn't expect you to be so reckless."
The familiar tone sent shivers down Bai Xiao Tu's spine as she stiffly turned her head.
Standing behind her was none other than Hunting Wolf, who should have been long gone. She had no idea when he had appeared on the battlefield; he stood there with a knife in hand while werewolves surrounded her on all sides, leaving her no escape.
"You... you aren't..." Bai Xiao Tu gasped in shock; he had vanished right before her eyes!
"You're really as foolish as they say," Hunting Wolf smirked mockingly. "Before we attacked Snow Rabbit Kingdom, our great wolf king had already set a trap."
"What... what trap?" Bai Xiao Tu clenched her fists within her sleeves.
Hunting Wolf did not answer.
Suddenly, wails rose from below Snow Rabbit Kingdom's walls, growing louder by the moment. Bai Xiao Tu looked down to see the closed gates opening; however, the fleeing rabbit soldiers could not enter because they were barred from entry.
Unarmed and defenseless, they were met with death at the hands of werewolves pouring out from their own gates like a swarm.
Bai Xiao Tu widened her eyes as she watched her guards fall one by one before her, blood staining the snow. She looked at the man being escorted by werewolves, dressed in black fur with long black hair cascading down, as he approached her step by step.
As the distance closed, Bai Xiao Tu gasped; the noble and striking man bore an uncanny resemblance to Lan Ruo Monk!
"Don't doubt your eyes; your Lan Ruo is our Wolf King."
The voice of Hunting Wolf seemed to echo from afar, even though it was right beside her. The wails continued, sending chills through her bones.
"You... are lying to me!" Bai Xiao Tu's voice trembled.
Standing before her was Lan Ruo—no, it should be Lang Ruo—his expression cold and emotionless as he said, "All's fair in war."
With the disguise stripped away, this was Lang Ruo's true face: ruthless and cunning.
In that instant, Bai Xiao Tu understood: "The monk Lan Ruo was a fabrication of yours. Your goal was to infiltrate Snow Rabbit Kingdom and launch a coordinated attack from within?"
"You got part of it right. Also, to obtain the ruby."
Lang Ruo's thin lips parted to reveal the harsh truth.
Bai Xiao Tu could no longer hold herself up and collapsed onto the ground. It was all a lie; everything she had encountered along the way was merely a trap set by Lang Ruo. Their meeting at the dilapidated temple was no coincidence. The fake Lan Ruo, Hunting Wolf's soul shattered; even Lan Ruo's injuries were staged, all to deceive her into giving up her ruby.
Even Lan Ruo's encouragement for her to mobilize troops was merely a ploy to conquer Snow Rabbit Kingdom.
What a clever double-edged scheme! How pitiful she was, stepping into their trap step by step, reveling in her own naivety and self-satisfaction.
Her inability to see through people and her emotional decisions had unwittingly doomed the future of Snow Rabbit Kingdom.
Lang Ruo coldly watched as Bai Xiao Tu sat on the ground, laughing and crying as if she had gone mad. Then he frowned and turned away, saying, "Take her to prison."
That winter, Snow Rabbit Kingdom was blanketed in white snow.
On this winter night, the city fell, the nation perished; the small Snow Rabbit Kingdom vanished in an instant from the demon realm.
The entire world fell into silence, only the frost fell silently from above, as if to cleanse the land of bloodshed and slaughter, covering the once beautiful moments of Snow Rabbit Kingdom.
In the dim dungeon, heavy chains clanked, an unpleasant odor lingered, and a bone-chilling cold enveloped the air.
Bai Xiao Tu sat shackled in the cold corner, offering no resistance, no curses, and no struggles. If it weren't for the faint sound of her breathing echoing in the silent space, the guards would have thought she was already dead.
But they did not know that Bai Xiao Tu was indeed dead—her heart was dead.
She looked disheveled, her pure white garment stained with blood and dirt. With her head bowed, she let her messy black hair fall over her face, hiding her desolate eyes.
It must be a dream, right? Just a nightmare, right?
Lan Ruo would never do this to her; he was her strong support. How could he stab her in the back with a sword, leaving her battered and bruised?
Yet, the anguished wails of her kin and their desperate pleas for mercy still echoed in her ears, like an inescapable curse. They cried out for revenge! For vengeance!
Yes, revenge was necessary. He betrayed you, deceived you, killed your kin, and trampled on your sincerity. How could he live freely?!
Days and nights passed in torment filled with regret, hatred, and betrayal. Finally, after enduring endless anguish, Bai Xiao Tu stood up. Like someone reborn, she forcefully tore apart the shackles. As she moved forward, she plunged her hand into the chest of a guard werewolf and stepped out with fierce determination.
The innocent and naive Bai Xiao Tu had perished that snowy night along with the Snow Rabbit Kingdom and her kin, as well as her Lan Ruo Monk.
The Bai Xiao Tu who emerged had embraced darkness and become a demon.
