I closed my eyes and shed a tear just before drifting off to sleep. After being discharged from the hospital, I took sick leave to recuperate at home. It wasn’t just my body that was healing; my heart, which had been battered and bruised, was also beginning to mend. A month later, I blocked all contact with Xu Chi, and my heart finally felt a bit more at peace.
Once I had finished my confinement period, I returned to work, hoping for a fresh start away from the scumbag. However, I never expected Xu Chi's mother to cause a scene again!
On my first day back at the office, I was buried under a mountain of work, busy writing reports when suddenly a sharp scream nearly made me jump out of my skin: “Lu Xinran, you uncultured brat, get out here!”
I shuddered and turned around abruptly to see Xu Chi's mother frantically pushing past the security guard. Her face was twisted with rage as she shouted, “You gatekeepers, get out of my way! Don’t block me!”
“Where’s the manager? Get the manager out here! Let’s see what kind of unsavory person you’ve hired!”
My colleagues looked up from their work, all eyes on the commotion, waiting for the spectacle to unfold. Xiao Xiao nudged me gently and whispered, “Sister Lu, isn’t that old lady your ex-boyfriend’s mother?”
I had previously shared a photo with Xu Chi, so nearly everyone in the office recognized him. My face instantly turned as red as a sunset; I wished I could find a hole to hide in. It was embarrassing enough to have such a scene at home; now it was happening in public—I felt like I could disappear into the floor.
The manager heard the commotion and stepped out of his office, looking surprised. He quickly approached her and said, “Auntie, what are you doing? We’re trying to work here; your actions are disrupting our office!”
“If there’s something to discuss, let’s talk privately in my office!”
“I won’t go! I’ll say it right here! Let everyone judge for themselves!”
Xu Chi's mother, seemingly out of her mind, pointed at me and shouted loudly, "This woman is a fraud! She deceived us into marriage and money, using pregnancy to threaten us! On the day of the wedding, she turned her back on us!"
"My son is so unfortunate! The invitations were sent out and then canceled. Our family's reputation is ruined; I can't go on living!" With that, she plopped down on the ground and began to throw a tantrum.
A colleague who had always looked at me with disdain muttered quietly, "I heard she didn't get married recently. It seems Lu Xinran is really unscrupulous; she probably found her boyfriend too poor and decided to climb the social ladder."
Anger surged within me, and I stood up abruptly. This old hag was going to get a taste of her own medicine today! I strode over to her, my face cold, and asked, "You say I deceived you for money; what money did I take from you?"
She was momentarily taken aback but quickly resumed her outburst. "The Bride Price! You cheated us out of the Bride Price!"
My colleagues began to whisper among themselves, their gazes filled with contempt. I clenched my fists, took a deep breath, and calmly replied, "Initially, we agreed on a Bride Price of 200,000. You said your family didn't have the money, so we settled for 88,000, which I accepted."
"Later on, you said that 88,000 had to be returned to marry off your younger son. I've already given it back to you! What debt do I owe you? Is it my coffin money?!"
Xu Chi's mother’s face instantly flushed red as she pointed at me and cursed, "You little wretch! What are you saying? A child born without a father or mother—"
I ignored her and continued speaking.
"Your son has no house, no car, and has been relying on me for support all these years. You only give him 500 a month for living expenses!"
I turned to my colleagues and said, "Let's be fair here. What can a grown man do with just 500 a month? He still needs to buy a computer and sneakers, and I’m the one footing the bill for everything!"
"I’ve spent over a hundred thousand just on living expenses these years. Is there anyone who eats soft rice like this?"
My colleagues nodded in agreement. The team leader, Sister Wang, let out a cold laugh and said, "Sister, you really have it all figured out. Are you trying to cut ties with your family?"
Another colleague chimed in with a grin, "I've seen people live off others before, but this is the first time I've seen someone eat such soft rice so hard. I'm learning something new today."
