I held my phone a bit farther away and calmly told him the address:
“Huaihai Road No. 30, Room 206, Building 4 of the Municipal Hospital.”
“The door is unlocked, just come in,” I added before hanging up.
At that moment, I was sitting in the hospital, right by Wang Chao's bedside.
He was still unconscious.
I waited quietly, anticipating the drama to unfold.
Half an hour later, the door swung open.
A woman rushed into the room, dragging a child behind her.
Upon spotting me, she immediately dropped to her knees.
Soon, the entire ward was filled with cries.
The son had rushed over from his exam and was taken aback by the scene.
The woman held onto the child with one hand and clutched my pant leg with the other, weeping as she shouted:
“Wang Chao, you’re gone! What are we supposed to do?”
“Sister, please have mercy on us! Zhi Fei is only in fourth grade, and now his father is gone!”
“Zhi Fei, bow to your aunt! The lawyer said you have rights to inherit too.”
The boy stood frozen for a moment before asking:
“Who are you? What are you talking about?”
“This is clearly my dad’s bed!”
I nodded at my son:
“Are you here? You should meet her; you’ll be family sooner or later.”
I pointed at the woman:
“This is your new mom.”
He pointed at the boy with a runny nose and said, "Your brother." Then he gestured toward Wang Chao, who had just opened his eyes, looking terrified. "Your dad is awake too."
"What a family, now everyone is here," he remarked.
The son was tangled up with the woman, shouting, "You liar! I don't believe you!"
The scuffle didn't last long. One reason was that he was just a powerless student. The woman, though seemingly frail, fought fiercely. The other reason was Wang Chao; he pulled out the IV and rushed to stand between the woman and the child. "Don't hit them; it's all my fault."
He covered the little boy's eyes and said gently, "Don't cry, sweetheart. Daddy will take you to eat fried chicken later."
The son's fist froze in mid-air as he looked at his father, as if seeing a complete stranger. "Dad," he asked with a trembling voice, "is this real?"
Wang Chao avoided his gaze and turned to glare at me. "Ma Yuan, is this your doing?"
"I knew it! You heartless woman, you'd do anything for that house!"
With that, he suddenly jumped up and swung his hand to hit me. But due to his broken leg from the accident, he lost his balance and fell to the ground, looking as if he was bowing to me.
"My leg!" he screamed while clutching it. "I'm going to sue you! You intentionally harmed me!"
The woman and child surrounded him, wailing and crying.
"What's all the noise about?" The doctor shouted from the doorway. "Be mindful, other patients need to rest!"
"Doctor," the woman cried urgently, "my husband's leg is hurt again, please take a look."
The doctor examined it briefly. "It's nothing serious, sir. No need to panic."
He stood up and his gaze fell on my face, surprised. "It's you? Have you thought about the treatment plan we discussed last time? A serious illness like this can't be delayed."
He glanced at the people beside me, frowning. "You’re making a fuss over a fracture, but with cancer being so severe, why isn’t anyone concerned?"
Wang Chao perked up at this. "Cancer? She must be mistaken, right? Doctor, you’re not joking?"
The doctor looked at us curiously but nodded nonetheless.
Wang Chao burst into laughter. "God has eyes! I’ll go burn incense tomorrow! Thank you, Buddha, for letting this woman have cancer; it’s a blessing for me!"
The woman was equally thrilled, and they embraced each other, starting to fantasize about dividing the inheritance.
"Honey, this is her property. If she dies, can you inherit it?"
"If she dies, it all goes to my son Xiao Bo."
"What about my son Zhi Fei?"
"Xiao Bo and Zhi Fei are brothers; of course it’s the same."
Wang Chao was coaxing her when he turned to Xiao Bo and said, "Xiao Bo, come meet her; she’ll be your mom from now on, and that’s your brother—"
Before he could finish his sentence, Xiao Bo's fist slammed hard into Wang Chao's face.
