"I'll go ask Guan Chunyi if she wants to join us," Nangong Shuang said as she stood up.
Upon arriving at Guan Chunyi's room, she found her trying on a newly purchased hairpin in front of the dressing table. Seeing Nangong Shuang enter, Guan Chunyi waved excitedly, "Sister Shuang, you're just in time! Come help me see if this hairpin matches my outfit for today!"
Nangong Shuang smiled and offered a few compliments before pulling out an invitation. "Guan Chunyi, Xiao Gongzi has invited us to attend the Qin Hui at Chengxi Meiyuan three days from now. Are you interested in going?"
Upon hearing this, Guan Chunyi's eyes lit up immediately. "The Qin Hui? Of course I want to go! I've heard that the Qin Hui at Mei Garden during the Lantern Festival is exceptionally elegant, with many renowned figures attending. I've been wanting to go for ages." Suddenly, she seemed to think of something and looked at Nangong Shuang mischievously. "But why would Xiao Gongzi invite us? Could it be..."
Nangong Shuang realized she was about to tease her and quickly explained, "I happened to run into Xiao Gongzi yesterday and learned about this event. He kindly extended the invitation, considering our connections with the Guo Residence."
Guan Chunyi clearly didn't buy this explanation and laughed, "Well, no matter the reason, I absolutely must go. I just wonder if my father will agree."
Nangong Shuang reassured her, "Lord Guo has always cherished you. Besides, this is a formal invitation, and I'll accompany you; there shouldn't be any issues."
Nodding, Guan Chunyi excitedly bombarded her with questions: "Which famous figures will be at the Qin Hui? What should I wear? Do we need to prepare any gifts?"
Caught up in her enthusiasm, Nangong Shuang couldn't help but smile as well. "I don't know the specifics either, but it should be a refined gathering of literati focused on musical exchanges. As for attire, something simple and elegant will suffice; no need to be overly extravagant."
After chatting for a while longer, Nangong Shuang took her leave to prepare for their visit to the embroidery shop in the southern part of the city. Before leaving, she quietly instructed Qiao Er, "I'm going out today. Please visit the Azure Dragon Gang and arrange for our protection details for three days from now."
Qiao Er nodded in agreement but then asked softly, "What about that warning letter? Do you plan to tell Xiao Gongzi?"
After pondering for a moment, Nangong Shuang shook her head. "Not yet. Let's keep it under wraps for now. I'll stay vigilant, and you should be careful too. As for the Qin Hui, we must remain tight-lipped around outsiders to avoid alarming anyone."
Before stepping out, Nangong Shuang glanced back at the warning letter: "The situation at the Qin Hui has changed; gentlemen are in danger." Those seven words felt like a riddle, filling her with both caution and curiosity. Who had sent this warning? What dangers awaited at the Qin Hui? And who was that mysterious musician?
"Regardless of what happens, I must attend the Qin Hui three days from now," Nangong Shuang resolved inwardly. "Even if it's a den of dragons and tigers, I will venture forth!"
With that determination in mind, she followed Guan Chunyi out into the bustling streets filled with people preparing for the upcoming Lantern Festival. Lanterns, ribbons, and flower lights were everywhere; the market was crowded with those buying festive supplies.
"The Lantern Festival is so lively," Guan Chunyi exclaimed happily. "This year we must go out to see the lanterns!"
While smiling and nodding along with her friend, Nangong Shuang couldn't shake off another thought: Was this vibrant atmosphere precisely the perfect time for a killer to strike? Would the upcoming Qin Hui during the Lantern Festival become another scene of bloodshed?
As they crossed a busy street, an unexpected chill ran down Nangong Shuang's spine. She instinctively scanned her surroundings but only saw throngs of people bustling about without any signs of trouble.
"What's wrong, Sister Shuang?" Guan Chunyi, noticing her unease, asked with concern.
Shaking her head and forcing a smile, Nangong Shuang replied, "It's nothing; just some trivial thoughts."
Yet deep down she knew that feeling of being watched was not an illusion. Amongst the crowd, someone was observing her from the shadows like a hunter stalking its prey.
