Two maids approached Nangong Shuang and Guan Chunyi, bowing respectfully. "Ladies, please follow us. The master and mistress have been waiting for you in Mei Garden for quite some time."
Guan Chunyi looked around with curiosity, her eyes sparkling with wonder. In contrast, Nangong Shuang discreetly observed the layout of the estate and the positions of the guards, contemplating how to escape should any trouble arise.
After passing through an impressive front hall and several corridors, they were led to the back courtyard of Xiao Mansion, where Mei Garden awaited. As they entered, the fragrance of spring enveloped them. Plum blossoms bloomed in a delightful mix of pink and white, filling the air with their sweet scent. In the center of the garden stood an elegant platform adorned with several precious guqins, while dozens of low tables and cushions surrounded it, already occupied by numerous guests.
"Miss Guo, Nangong Shuang," a gentle voice called out. Xiao Zhongyan approached them, dressed in a deep blue robe. "It is an honor to have you both here today."
Nangong Shuang and Guan Chunyi bowed in response. Guan Chunyi cheerfully replied, "How could we refuse an invitation from Xiao Gongzi? I’ve heard that many renowned guests are attending today; I have been looking forward to this for quite some time."
Xiao Zhongyan smiled and nodded. "Indeed, several esteemed guests have promised to attend. Please follow me to meet my father and mother."
As they walked, Nangong Shuang glanced around and noticed that many people had gathered in Mei Garden. There were dignitaries dressed in splendid robes, distinguished scholars with refined airs, and elegantly dressed young ladies—likely daughters from prominent families in the capital. Among them, a girl in a light purple dress stood out particularly; she sat near the platform surrounded by several young women, her laughter ringing like silver bells.
"That must be Xiao Family's daughter, Xiao Yuyan," Guan Chunyi whispered to Nangong Shuang. "She truly is as beautiful as a fairy; no wonder so many people are drawn to her."
Nangong Shuang did not respond but followed Xiao Zhongyan toward the main seating area. At the head table sat a middle-aged man with a commanding presence—Xiao Xiang—alongside a gracious woman in her forties who bore a resemblance to Xiao Zhongyan; she must be Madam Xiao.
"Father, Mother," Xiao Zhongyan greeted respectfully. "This is Lord Guo's daughter, Guo Chunyi, and this is our guest from Guo Residence, Nangong Shuang. She is skilled in medicine and has a good understanding of music as well."
Xiao Xiang nodded in acknowledgment while Madam Xiao stepped forward with a smile. "I have heard much about you both from Yan'er. Today, seeing you in person confirms what he said—you are indeed stunning. Please take your seats; it’s rare for us to gather like this, so let’s enjoy ourselves."
Guan Chunyi felt a bit nervous amidst such grandeur; she lowered her head and bowed before following the maid to her assigned seat. Nangong Shuang gracefully saluted Xiao Xiang and Madam Xiao but was about to leave with Guan Chunyi when Madam Xiao called out to her.
"Nangong Shuang, I’ve heard that your medical skills are remarkable and that you have extensive knowledge of herbal medicine. Would you be willing to share some insights with me?"
Nangong Shuang was momentarily taken aback but quickly regained her composure. "Madam, you flatter me. I only have a superficial understanding; how could I dare to show off my skills before someone like you?"
Madam Xiao laughed lightly. "You are too modest. Yan'er mentioned that you once diagnosed Steward Li from the Crown Prince's Mansion at a glance and determined he had excessive heart fire. You treated his long-standing headaches with a calming remedy—such medical skill is truly admirable."
Nangong Shuang felt a jolt of surprise; she had indeed treated an old steward at the Crown Prince's Mansion but hadn’t expected Madam Xiao to know about it. It seemed that the Xiao Family was more aware of her than she had anticipated.
"It was merely luck," Nangong Shuang humbly replied. "Compared to the family medical practices of Xiao Mansion, my abilities are hardly worth mentioning."
A flicker of intrigue passed through Madam Xiao's eyes as she nodded slightly. "You are too humble. Since we have this rare opportunity to gather today, why not sit with me? We can have a more detailed conversation."
