Xiao Zhongyan shook his head. "No, Father, I cannot allow you to make such a grave mistake. Nangong Shuang is innocent, and so is the Nangong Family!"
Seeing her son so stubborn, Xiao Xiang laughed in anger. "Very well! Since you are so obstinate, do not blame me for being ruthless!" With a wave of his hand, the remaining black-clad men and the guards downstairs rushed up!
Xiao Zhongyan quickly drew his sword to protect Nangong Shuang and engaged in fierce combat with the intruders. The sounds of clashing swords echoed throughout Xiao Lou as Nangong Shuang also drew her short sword, standing back to back with Xiao Zhongyan to fend off their attackers. Although she had some martial arts skills, she struggled against the well-trained guards.
"Nangong Shuang, we must break through!" Xiao Zhongyan whispered during the fight. "Follow me and charge out!"
Nangong Shuang nodded in agreement and followed Xiao Zhongyan towards the stairs. With his superb swordsmanship, he repelled the guards blocking their path in just a few exchanges, clearing a way for them.
They fought their way through and finally burst out of Xiao Lou into the courtyard. However, they found themselves surrounded by hundreds of guards, with Xiao Xiang standing above them, coldly watching.
"Why aren't you running?" Xiao Xiang mocked. "Yan'er, you truly disappoint me. To betray your own family for a Nangong girl!"
Xiao Zhongyan sneered. "Father, the one who truly betrays the family is you! For the sake of power, you would participate in a massacre; that is the greatest betrayal to the ancestors of the Xiao Family!"
Xiao Xiang was furious. "You insolent wretch! Seize them!"
Dozens of guards surged forward. Although Nangong Shuang and Xiao Zhongyan fought valiantly, they were outnumbered and soon found themselves in a perilous situation.
At that critical moment, a commotion erupted outside the courtyard, followed by Guan Chunyi's panicked voice calling out, "Sister Shuang! Where is Sister Shuang?"
Then a group burst into the courtyard, led by none other than Lord Guo! He was followed by Guan Chunyi and Qiao Er, along with a squad of guards from Guo Residence.
"Stop!" Lord Guo shouted sternly. "Xiao Xiang, what are you doing?"
Xiao Xiang was caught off guard by Lord Guo's sudden appearance. "Lord Guo? How could you..."
Lord Guo replied coldly, "Xiao Xiang, how can you lay hands on guests in your own residence? If it weren't for my daughter worrying that Nangong Shuang had been gone too long, I wouldn't have known you set this trap here!"
Xiao Xiang's expression shifted between anger and contemplation as he considered his next move. Just then, another group arrived, led by none other than the Crown Prince! Dressed in plain clothes but exuding an extraordinary presence, it was clear he was of high status.
"The Crown Prince?!" Xiao Xiang was even more shocked and hurriedly bowed.
The Crown Prince cast a cold glance at Xiao Xiang. "Xiao Xiang, I never expected you to be so bold as to commit violence in your own home. This does not befit a high-ranking official."
Xiao Xiang quickly explained, "Your Highness, please see reason. This woman is a descendant of the Nangong Family; ten years ago they rebelled and according to law should be punished with extermination of nine clans. She narrowly escaped capture and has now returned to investigate; she is indeed a threat..."
"Enough!" The Crown Prince interrupted sharply. "The case of the Nangong Family is fraught with doubts; I have already ordered a re-examination. What you are doing today is nothing but an act of desperation!"
Xiao Xiang's face turned pale as he realized there was no way to turn back now. He glanced at Xiao Zhongyan with complex emotions in his eyes and finally sighed deeply. "Very well! It has come to this; further words are pointless. However, Your Highness should know that this matter involves many parties and is not solely orchestrated by me."
The Crown Prince sneered. "Xiao Xiang, I will thoroughly investigate this case and will not let any participant escape justice—no matter who they are!"
