The two of them stealthily entered the hall, searching the surroundings. Nangong Shuang and Qiao Er held their breath, pressing against the pillar. As footsteps drew closer, their situation became increasingly perilous.
Suddenly, a commotion erupted outside the courtyard, as if someone was fighting. The two inside the hall immediately became alert.
"What’s happening?" one asked.
The other rushed toward the door. "Let’s check it out!"
They hurriedly left the main hall and dashed outside. Taking advantage of the distraction, Nangong Shuang and Qiao Er slipped out through a back window and hid behind a large tree to observe the situation in the courtyard.
They saw four or five men in black fighting fiercely with two burly men dressed in coarse cloth. The two strong men were remarkably skilled, managing to hold their own against multiple attackers.
"It's members of the Azure Dragon Gang!" Qiao Er whispered in surprise. "Han Gangzhu really sent people to protect us secretly."
The black-clad men gradually began to falter, and one shouted, "Retreat! Fall back!"
Seeing that the black-clad men were about to escape, Nangong Shuang took a pouch of powder from her sleeve and aimed it at their escape route. The powder dispersed in the air, forming a thin mist. As the black-clad men inhaled it while running, their steps became unsteady, and their movements slowed down. The two burly men from the Azure Dragon Gang seized the opportunity to step forward and quickly subdue them.
Once they confirmed it was safe, Nangong Shuang and Qiao Er emerged from their hiding place. The two members of the Azure Dragon Gang immediately bowed. "Nangong Shuang, our leader instructed us to follow you secretly for protection; we didn't expect it would come in handy."
Nangong Shuang nodded gratefully. "Thank you both for your timely assistance. Who are these black-clad men?"
One of the burly men shook his head. "We’re not sure, but judging by their skills, they must be trained assassins."
Nangong Shuang approached the subdued black-clad men and crouched down to pull off one man's mask. He was a man around thirty years old with an ordinary face but fierce eyes. Upon seeing his mask removed, he sneered coldly. "Nangong Family's Remnants, you won't escape for long."
Unfazed, Nangong Shuang asked, "Who sent you?"
The black-clad man remained silent with a cold smirk. Nangong Shuang took out a small vial of powder from her sleeve and waved it in front of him. "Do you know what this is? It's Nangong Family's Chasing Soul Powder. If you inhale it, you'll have to confess everything; otherwise, you'll die within seven days in unbearable agony."
The man's expression changed slightly, but he still held his ground. "Threatening me won’t work; I won’t say anything."
Nangong Shuang gently sprinkled some powder on his face and said coldly, "Then let’s see how that goes."
After struggling for a moment, fear suddenly flashed in his eyes. "I... I really don’t know who sent us. We just received a task saying to come to this residence to find some items; no one told us what they were."
Nangong Shuang pressed on, "Who gave you this task?"
"It was... it was someone called 'Shadow'," the black-clad man stammered. "He’s our contact, but he only follows orders from above."
Nangong Shuang furrowed her brow tightly. "Which organization are you from?"
After hesitating for a moment, he finally spoke up. "Shadow... Shadow Pavilion."
So it’s Shadow Pavilion again! A heavy feeling settled in Nangong Shuang's heart. It seemed that Shadow Pavilion was indeed pursuing her relentlessly, and their power was formidable.
"Where is the headquarters of the Shadow Pavilion?" Nangong Shuang continued to inquire.
This time, the man in black shook his head. "I truly don't know. We are just the lowest-level assassins, taking on tasks and completing them without asking about anything else."
Seeing that she couldn't extract more information, Nangong Shuang stood up and said to the two members of the Azure Dragon Gang, "Take them back and hand them over to Han Gangzhu. Be careful; these people might attempt suicide."
The two complied, binding the man in black securely before taking him away. Nangong Shuang and Qiao Er hurriedly left the Desolate Mansion, making their way back to the city along a narrow path.
