After hearing her description, Xiao Zhongyan fell into deep thought. "It seems that your birthmark is not only a symbol of your identity but also a key to unlocking certain secrets. What does that booklet contain?"
"It records some relationships and events, frequently mentioning 'Tai Ping Hui' and 'Tai Ping Ling'," Nangong Shuang replied. "It seems that 'Tai Ping Ling' is some kind of token or credential, and my birthmark might be related to it."
Xiao Zhongyan suddenly understood. "No wonder Tai Ping Hui is willing to go to such lengths to hunt you down. If you truly possess 'Tai Ping Ling', then you are their greatest threat!"
As the two were deeply engaged in conversation, a gust of wind swept through the bamboo forest, creating a rustling sound. Xiao Zhongyan became alert and whispered, "Someone is approaching."
Nangong Shuang sensed something unusual as well; she instinctively reached for the short dagger hidden in her sleeve, ready to face any potential danger.
Moments later, an elderly man slowly emerged from the bamboo grove. His hair and beard were completely white, his complexion rosy, and he wore a Daoist robe—he was the Old Daoist from Bai Lu Guan!
"You!" Nangong Shuang exclaimed in surprise as she stood up.
The Old Daoist smiled gently. "Please don't be alarmed; I am here to deliver a message."
He took out a letter from his sleeve and respectfully handed it to Nangong Shuang. "This is from Lord Feng Yu, who asked me to convey it to both of you. He said the time has come to unveil the truth."
Nangong Shuang took the letter and exchanged a surprised glance with Xiao Zhongyan. Upon opening it, she found only a few brief lines: "Nangong Shuang, Xiao Zhongyan: The Feng Yu Pavilion is located in the northwest corner of the imperial city; it can only be opened with Tai Ping Ling. I will be waiting for you there at midnight three days from now. At that time, all truths will be revealed. — Feng Yu"
Both Nangong Shuang and Xiao Zhongyan were astonished after reading the letter. The Feng Yu Pavilion was actually within the imperial city! This meant they had to find a way to infiltrate the palace, which seemed nearly impossible.
"This..." Xiao Zhongyan hesitated. "The palace guards are strict; how can we get in?"
The Old Daoist smiled mysteriously. "There are ways. Once Tai Ping Ling is revealed, help will come."
With that, he bowed slightly to both of them and turned to leave, quickly disappearing into the depths of the bamboo forest.
Nangong Shuang and Xiao Zhongyan exchanged glances, momentarily speechless. This sudden information left them both excited and bewildered.
"Do you trust him?" Nangong Shuang asked softly.
Xiao Zhongyan pondered for a moment before nodding. "I do. Everything seems too coincidental to be a trap. Besides, if someone wanted to harm us, they wouldn't go through such elaborate means."
Nangong Shuang found his reasoning sound. "Then shall we head to Feng Yu Pavilion at midnight three days from now?"
"Yes," Xiao Zhongyan affirmed. "But before that, we need to prepare thoroughly. Infiltrating the imperial city is no small matter; if we're discovered, the consequences could be dire."
The two discussed for a while and formulated a preliminary plan. Xiao Zhongyan stated he would use his connections in the Crown Prince's Mansion to gather information about the palace guards; Nangong Shuang would research more about Tai Ping Ling to see if her birthmark could indeed unlock Feng Yu Pavilion.
Once their plan was set, they prepared to leave. Just then, the sky suddenly darkened, and a cool breeze blew through, causing the bamboo leaves to rustle ominously as if foretelling something.
Nangong Shuang looked up at the sky, an inexplicable sense of worry swelling within her. "Xiao Gongzi, do you think what we're doing is too risky?"
Xiao Zhongyan gazed at her, a hint of tenderness flashing in his eyes. "It is indeed dangerous, but it's worth trying for the sake of uncovering the truth. If you're afraid, I can go alone."
Nangong Shuang shook her head. "No, this is my mission, and I will not back down. It's just..." She paused, "I'm afraid of dragging you into this. The Xiao Family has already suffered unjustly because of the Nangong Family's issues, and if you get involved in danger because of me..."
