"Over there."
Lu An Nuan pointed to the shopping bag on the floor. Noticing a change in the atmosphere around Ye Yunfeng, she chose to act as if she hadn’t felt anything and calmly continued eating her meal. The stir-fried vegetables were ready, and she ignored his presence as she brought them to the dining table, then proceeded to make soup.
Two dishes and one soup.
As she took two sets of chopsticks and sat down, she noticed Ye Yunfeng standing nearby with a cold expression. Lu An Nuan feigned realization, saying, "Oh, so you’re not eating? Then I guess I brought too many bowls."
She started to put one back.
Ye Yunfeng narrowed his eyes slightly. "Lu An Nuan."
His sudden voice made Lu An Nuan freeze mid-motion. She looked at him as he continued, "Where do you get the courage to ignore me?"
With those words, Lu An Nuan halted her actions.
Where did her courage come from?
She didn’t know.
She just didn’t want to be mocked—was that wrong?
And what gave him the courage to demand that she cook? It wasn’t as if he could simply disregard their marriage contract after their divorce. It wasn’t as if she, Lu An Nuan, would go out and work hard just to pay off his breach of contract fees bit by bit. Just because she owed money didn’t mean she had to be treated like a lesser person.
She didn't force him to help.
"Do as you wish, I'm hungry."
She set his bowl aside, originally planning to serve him rice. Since he didn't want any, that was fine. After all, he was the big CEO and a young master; she couldn't afford to serve him anyway. So what if she didn't make him steak? He could find someone who could.
She served herself a bowl of rice and sat at the dining table, eating slowly.
Ye Yunfeng stood there, watching the little woman eat with her head down, surprised that she showed him no courtesy at all.
"Lu An Nuan, is this your attitude towards life?"
He hadn't even settled the morning's account with her, and now she was throwing a tantrum.
How did he end up with such a temperamental woman?
"What do you want me to do? I can't cook those delicacies you enjoy. I've been poor for so long that I can't act noble anymore. I used to be someone who couldn't even tell grains apart. Now that I can cook some simple dishes, it's all thanks to my own efforts. If you can't get used to the home-cooked meals I make, you can find someone who can prepare Western cuisine or crayfish for you. We can go to the civil affairs bureau right now; I won't delay your future at all, nor will I torture your stomach."
If he didn't like her cooking, why bother coming home to eat?
She really couldn't understand what was going on in this man's mind.
"You!"
Night Yunfeng spoke a single sentence, then suddenly fell silent.
He looked at her fair little hands, marked with faint red traces. He didn't know what thought crossed his mind, but the anger that had been boiling inside him was suddenly doused with cold water. After all, she was stubborn; why should he be angry with her?
He had only intended to make things difficult for her, thinking she wouldn’t know how to handle it but would at least feel wronged for his sake. Who would have thought she would be so obstinate? Yet, if she were truly the kind of woman who would change all her habits and temper for him, perhaps he wouldn't have taken her to get that marriage certificate, to experience a different kind of life.
What one cannot have is often the most precious. If she became the person he wanted, she would lose her sharp edges.
But at the very least, she should learn to let him into her heart a little bit, right?
With a surge of frustration inside him, he realized how twisted and neurotic it felt to chase after someone. Even Night Yunfeng had moments when he found himself pursuing someone. And that person who caught his attention was her. Was this some sort of retribution?
As he stared at An Nuan, who was eating, Night Yunfeng found himself momentarily lost in thought.
