In a hurry, Su Yao rushed back to the company. As soon as she entered Su Yuyan's office, she saw Xiao Lin anxiously standing by the sofa.
Su Yuyan lay on the sofa with her eyes closed, her face alarmingly pale.
"Mom!" Su Yao dashed over and grasped Su Yuyan's hand.
Su Yuyan's eyelids fluttered slightly, but she did not open her eyes or respond.
"Xiao Lin, you can go ahead and take care of your work. I'll look after her," Su Yao said softly, her voice as light as a feather.
Xiao Lin hesitated for a moment, then nodded and quietly left the room.
The room fell silent, leaving only the two of them—mother and daughter.
Su Yao sat on the coffee table, gazing at her mother's pale face, feeling a wave of sorrow that made her want to cry.
"Mom, how are you feeling now?"
Su Yuyan still ignored her, as if she hadn’t heard anything.
Su Yao chose not to speak again and simply sat quietly beside her.
Time passed slowly; the office was so quiet that they could hear each other’s breathing.
Finally, Su Yuyan slowly opened her eyes.
"Lin Yue is back in the country, isn’t she?" Her voice was dry like sandpaper.
Su Yao's heart skipped a beat. "Mom..."
"Did you see her? Have you been with her all day today?" Su Yuyan's gaze was sharp as a knife.
Su Yao bit her lip, reluctant to lie. "Yes."
Those two words struck like thunder on a clear day, instantly igniting Su Yuyan's fury.
She attempted to sit up to say something, but suddenly darkness clouded her vision, and her body slumped down weakly.
"Mom! Mom!" Su Yao was terrified and quickly pulled out her phone to call for an ambulance.
The ambulance arrived with a wail, and Su Yuyan was rushed to the hospital in an emergency.
In the emergency room, Su Yao sat in a chair in the corridor, gripping her hands tightly until her nails dug into her flesh.
The doctor emerged and removed his mask. "The patient experienced temporary blood supply deficiency; there’s no major issue."
"But she needs to rest well and must not be allowed to get emotionally agitated again."
Su Yao nodded vigorously, "I understand, thank you, doctor."
In the hospital room, Su Yuyan was still in a deep sleep.
Su Yao sent a message to Lin Yue: "My mom is hospitalized."
The phone call came through quickly.
"How is she? Is it serious?" Lin Yue's voice was filled with concern.
"The doctor said it's not serious, but she can't be stimulated anymore," Su Yao replied, her voice weary.
"I want to go see Auntie."
Su Yao smiled bitterly, "She probably doesn't want to see you right now. Just take it slow."
"I'll spend more time with her during this period, but we can meet at the set."
Lin Yue felt a pang of sympathy for her understanding nature. "Alright, don't worry about me. Take good care of your mom."
The next morning, at the filming location.
Lin Yue arrived early and greeted the crew members.
Director Li's eyes lit up when he saw her. "Ms. Lin! When did you come back to the country?"
"I just got back not long ago," Lin Yue replied with a smile. "I wanted to check on the progress."
"The progress is going smoothly! Su Yao's performance is amazing; I believe this drama will definitely win awards!"
At that moment, Su Yao's call came in.
"Lin Yue, I'm sorry, I can't make it this morning."
"I have to accompany my mom for some tests," Su Yao said apologetically.
"Will you come in the afternoon?"
"I have my scenes in the afternoon, but I will come over."
"Okay, I'll wait for you," Lin Yue said gently.
After hanging up, Lin Yue was about to check the monitors when she suddenly saw Zhang Zihao appear on set.
He noticed Lin Yue as well, and a flicker of surprise crossed his face before he quickly masked it.
"Ms. Lin, when did you return to the country?" Zhang Zihao approached with a smile to greet her.
"I just got back not long ago," Lin Yue replied coolly.
"You're really dedicated; coming to the set right after returning," Zhang Zihao remarked with a hint of probing in his tone.
Lin Yue glanced at him and said, "I just wanted to check on the progress. After all, I hope both this drama and Su Yao can win awards."
"Right, right... I have a meeting at my company, so I’ll head out first." Zhang Zihao found an excuse to leave.
As soon as he stepped out of the production team, Zhang Zihao immediately took out his phone and called Jiang Rou.
"Did you know Lin Yue is back in the country?"
"I know." Jiang Rou's voice was calm.
"She didn’t even notify me when she returned, so I could be mentally prepared." Zhang Zihao sounded somewhat displeased.
"Weren't you the one who said you didn’t need my help?" Jiang Rou replied sarcastically. "What kind of mental preparation do you need? It’s bound to be a losing battle."
"You—" Zhang Zihao was momentarily at a loss for words.
He took a moment to collect himself and said, "As long as you don’t use underhanded tactics against Su Yao, I’ll cooperate with whatever you decide."
Although Jiang Rou believed that Zhang Zihao would inevitably lose, she didn’t want to give up this pawn so easily. It might still be useful in the future.
"Alright, wait for my notice."
Meanwhile, at the hospital.
Ye Lan hurriedly arrived with a fruit basket.
"President Su, how are you? I heard you were hospitalized, so I rushed over to see you."
Su Yuyan smiled upon seeing Ye Lan. "Lanlan, you’re here."
Su Yao felt a bit awkward about her mother’s enthusiasm but still expressed her gratitude. "Teacher Ye, thank you for coming to see my mom."
"No need to be polite." Ye Lan sat by the bedside. "Besides visiting President Su today, I have some good news to share with you both."
"I spoke with Director Li about another project that we plan to shoot in Thailand, and I’d like to sincerely invite Su Yao to play the lead role."
Su Yao's eyes lit up. "It wouldn’t be 'Moonlight City,' would it?"
Ye Lan's eyes widened. "How did you know?"
"I'm your loyal fan!" Su Yao exclaimed excitedly. "I’ve read every one of your books; aside from 'Dark River,' 'Moonlight City' is my favorite!"
"And shooting in Thailand is perfect for 'Moonlight City'!"
Ye Lan looked at Su Yao, her admiration and affection evident in her gaze.
Su Yuyan watched Ye Lan's gaze on her daughter and felt a secret joy. She was determined to bring them together.
"Have you accepted?" Ye Lan asked eagerly.
"Of course! It’s my honor!" Su Yao replied without hesitation.
"Due to the filming schedule, you’ll need to travel frequently between China and Thailand during this time, which might be quite tiring."
"That's fine; I’m not afraid of hard work. Being chosen is an honor for me."
Curiously, Su Yao asked, "Will we start filming so soon? Has all the preparation been done?"
"Don't worry, the investor is very capable. Everything that can be solved with money has been taken care of; now we just need your approval."
Su Yao was shocked by the investor's strength. "Who is the investor?"
Ye Lan thought of the investor—Ethan Ma. Ethan had personally approached her, not only purchasing the rights to Moonlight City but also promising to help her and Director Li go international. She didn’t understand why Ethan had chosen her, but his only condition was for Ye Lan to persuade Su Yao to be the female lead and keep it a secret. The reason was that he was a fan of Su Yao and didn’t want her to know, fearing she might refuse.
Ye Lan already liked Su Yao, and this was a perfect opportunity for them to spend more time together. She didn’t think much about it and certainly didn’t plan to reveal the truth to Su Yao.
"A new investment company called Starlight is behind this. The actual controller has been doing mergers and acquisitions overseas; his name is Ethan Ma. He is also the producer of Moonlight City."
"The background is clean, and he has significant strength and resources; you can find news about him online," Ye Lan said, snapping back to reality.
Although Su Yao was curious, her love for the project overshadowed her thoughts. "Then I officially accept!"
Su Yuyan looked at them and suddenly reached out to grab both Su Yao's and Ye Lan's hands, pulling them together.
Su Yao tried to pull her hand away but was firmly held by Su Yuyan.
"Lan Lan, my health isn’t great; I hope you can help take care of Yao Yao."
"President Su, don’t worry; I will take good care of Su Yao," Ye Lan said, gazing affectionately at Su Yao.
Ye Lan gently squeezed Su Yao's hand.
Su Yao felt a bit uneasy and shyly lowered her head with a smile. In the hospital room, three women each had their own thoughts. Su Yuyan looked at Ye Lan with admiration in her eyes, while Ye Lan gazed at Su Yao with affection. However, Su Yao's mind was still on Lin Yue. Little did they know, someone was already plotting in the shadows.
After leaving the hospital, Ye Lan informed Director Li of the news. Upon hearing it, Director Li was very pleased and immediately called Ethan.
"Ethan, good news, Su Yao has agreed."
"Great," Ethan's voice conveyed satisfaction. "Remember, this production needs her to be fully invested."
"Don't worry about that; Su Yao is a very dedicated actress. She will definitely immerse herself in the role."
"And don't rush the shooting schedule. The budget is sufficient for you to use; this project must be perfect."
After hanging up, Director Li fell into deep thought. Although he vaguely sensed there were underlying issues, he didn't want to delve deeper; after all, going international was the most important thing.
In Los Angeles, at the Lin Residence, Shangguan Yun was reading a newly received message, a cold smile appearing on her lips. Ever since Lin Yue publicly acknowledged her relationship with Su Yao and learned that Su Yao was Su Yuyan's daughter, she had sent people to secretly monitor them. She needed to find out if there was any connection between Su Yao and Lin Zhihong. If there was a connection, she wanted to know whether Lin Zhihong had any ties to Su Yao or even Su Yuyan.
After a period of surveillance, she had come to know everything about Su Yao. This included Ye Lan's affection for Su Yao and Su Yao's admiration for Ye Lan's work. Therefore, she planned to use Ye Lan to sabotage the relationship between Su Yao and Lin Yue.
Shangguan Yun vowed silently: No matter whether you are Zhihong's child or not, the daughter of that vixen from over twenty years ago, I will not allow you to ruin my daughter's life.
