I thought to myself: Why do you care?
“Hey, Zhong Qi, have you been in a relationship during college?”
I felt speechless inside, but wore a sweet smile on my face. “Hmm.”
“How many have you dated? With your looks, it must be quite a few.”
I replied, “That’s a secret!”
“Look at you, keeping it mysterious. I saw you having dinner with a guy a few days ago.”
What?! I was completely stunned. Sister Chen had said just the other day that I was dating someone, and I was puzzled—how could I be dating someone without knowing it? Turns out she was spreading rumors.
I quickly clarified, “Oh, I’m not in a relationship.”
“That day on Minxi Road, I saw you shopping with a guy.”
I: …
“That was my friend; he came here on a business trip, and I took him out for dinner.” I explained while glancing at him, worried he might misunderstand. But he remained silent the entire time.
After dropping off the others, it was just the two of us left in the car. I had already moved to the right seat, hugging my bag and yawning.
“Come sit in the front,” he said. “The air conditioning is cooler up there.”
“Oh,” I replied.
Once I switched seats, I took the initiative to say, “Thanks for driving us so late.”
He responded expressionlessly, “No problem.”
The road was desolate at this hour; even ghosts wouldn’t want to come out now. The sanitation workers were already on duty, and watching their figures made me feel a little uneasy, instantly triggering my emo mode.
“I heard from Sister Chen that you’re dating someone; turns out we misunderstood,” he suddenly said.
I snapped back to reality and widened my eyes in surprise. “You know about that too?”
"Mm."
"Then why didn't you ask just now?"
"Ah?"
"Never mind."
"Are you angry?"
"No."
"Don't be angry. Colleagues are like that; they love gossip."
"I'm not angry." I turned to look out the window.
He chuckled softly, and I suddenly felt annoyed, asking, "What are you laughing at?"
He looked innocent. "Nothing, just think you sometimes seem very young."
I immediately retorted, "I am young."
He sobered up and said lightly, "For things you don't want to do, you can refuse. Don't let them think you're easy to bully."
"Oh."
"I apologize for the gossip."
"No need; it wasn't you who spread it."
"You have a clear sense of right and wrong."
"Thank you for the compliment."
After we reached the ground floor, he told me that he would rest in the morning and go to work in the afternoon. I nodded and watched his car drive away.
Recalling that early morning, my heart fluttered. Some people can leave an imprint on your heart with every move and word they make.
Perhaps neither of us is a person who indulges in silence; we just haven't met someone willing to open up.
As the year-end approached, once the holiday notice was released, I immediately scrambled for tickets.
With two weeks left until the holiday, I was in high spirits, humming a little tune as I walked, even finding joy in my commute to work. The office was filled with a festive atmosphere, everyone smiling and laughing.
“Xiao Zhong, do you have any talents?” Sister Chen suddenly asked me.
I thought for a moment and replied, “Does playing the guitar count?”
“That’s great!” Sister Chen exclaimed, jumping in front of me like a child. She grabbed my shoulders tightly and announced loudly, “You’ll be the star of this year’s annual meeting!”
I was taken aback. “The annual meeting?!”
Sister Chen laughed and explained, “Our department has to present a program every time, and since no one has any talents, I was prepared for us to be at the bottom again. I didn’t expect you to have a hidden skill!”
I quickly waved my hands, saying I was shy and afraid of social anxiety, so I didn’t dare to go on stage. But Sister Chen wouldn’t hear any of it. With eager anticipation, she said, “Our department always comes in last; you absolutely have to perform this time! Hurry up and think of a program; we need to report it in the next couple of days.”
