There were many people searching in the mountains, and they quickly found the area with empty bullet casings. When Zhu Junjie saw the traces left on the ground, a bad premonition grew stronger in his heart. He tried calling down into the gully several times, but there was no response.
It was late autumn, and the forest was full of fallen leaves. Although there were no trees at the bottom of the Deep Gully, there were many trees above it. The wind blew through, sending a lot of leaves down to the bottom, where they accumulated thickly. If someone fell in, it was highly likely they would be covered by the leaves.
Zhu Junjie stared at the spot where Mong Si might have fallen for a long time but did not see anything resembling a human figure. They needed to find a way to go down and take a look. Zhu Junjie was not a professional; even if he wanted to go down, he felt powerless.
The people who had come with him were already equipped and quickly descended to the bottom of the gully, soon locating the spot where Mong Si had fallen. The leaves piled up thickly at the bottom were very soft, and for safety, those below dared not move too quickly.
Zhu Junjie squatted beside the Deep Gully, anxiously waiting for news from his search team. "He's here!"
When Mong Si rolled down into the gully, his body was completely out of his control and ended up closer to the other side of the gully. Because of this, he only sustained one injury from those people who had shot at him. By the time they reached the edge of the gully, Mong Si had already come to a stop; they did not expect him to roll out so far.
The person searching for Mong Si stepped on his hand and noticed something unusual before finding him buried under the leaves. Mong Si lay on his back, his face pale and breathing weakly. The person checked for Mong Si's breath and found that he was still alive before reporting back to those above.
When Zhu Junjie learned that Mong Si was still alive, he let out a gentle sigh of relief. Although the bottom of the gully was only about ten meters deep, being in the forest with limited tools made it quite difficult to bring someone up.
A doctor accompanied them into the forest for rescue and immediately came up to check on both individuals. The Special Police officer who had descended into the Deep Gully waved his hand at the doctor, saying, "I'm fine over here; you should check on him."
The walls of Deep Gully were soft, and as they pulled up with ropes, dirt kept falling down. The Special Police officer was now covered in dirt, looking like a mud person. He felt just a bit tired but did not sense any pain in his body. He took a tissue from his partner to wipe his face and looked towards Mong Si.
When he found Mong Si in Deep Gully, Mong Si's breathing was already weak. After all that commotion earlier, it was uncertain how serious his condition was.
At that moment, Zhu Junjie crouched beside Mong Si, glancing at Mong Si's dirty face, which was unrecognizable, and then looking ahead of him.
Mong Si's breathing was shallow; if one didn't look closely, they might think he had already stopped breathing. When the doctor arrived, Zhu Junjie quickly moved aside.
The doctor examined Mong Si and said, "The patient's condition is not good; he needs to be taken to the hospital as soon as possible." The doctor first stopped the bleeding from Mong Si's wounds and then gave him an injection to prevent infection before placing him on a stretcher. Throughout the entire process, Mong Si did not open his eyes.
Zhu Junjie walked alongside the stretcher, occasionally glancing at Mong Si. After more than two hours, they finally emerged from the forest, which surrounded an abandoned village. The village had been uninhabited for many years, and the road was in disrepair. An ambulance was parked outside the village.
Because the person who had escaped was still unaccounted for in the forest, police and Special Police surrounded the area. Zhu Junjie and Mong Si got into the ambulance together. The nearby roads were also uneven, causing the vehicle to move slowly.
Even so, the ride was still bumpy; Zhu Junjie sat in the vehicle, his body swaying with it. He looked at the monitoring equipment displaying Mong Si's vital signs. Mong Si's vital signs were slightly low, but the doctor mentioned that he had a strong constitution. Although there were signs of infection in his wounds, as long as they could reach the hospital quickly, it shouldn't be a major issue.
Zhu Junjie learned from the person who had led them into the forest to search for Mong Si that Mong Si had rolled down into Deep Gully. Before rolling down, he had taken a gun from them. At first, Zhu Junjie was confused, but as he sat in the vehicle and his fatigue gradually faded away, he became more alert.
He understood that Mong Si likely chose to do this to avoid becoming a pawn for those people or to escape their control. However, Deep Gully was remote and filled with fallen leaves; without someone specifically searching for him, it would be difficult to find him. Did he really believe someone would come looking for him?
Zhu Junjie suddenly felt as if he had been manipulated.
"Is that car up ahead out of control?"
While Zhu Junjie was deep in thought, the driver suddenly shouted. Hearing the voice, Zhu Junjie looked toward the driver's cabin but couldn't clearly hear what was being said due to the separation.
"The road is so narrow that if the oncoming vehicle doesn't stop, the two cars will collide."
At that moment, a car was speeding toward them, and the road could only accommodate one vehicle. The driver of the ambulance, seeing that the other car showed no signs of stopping, quickly slowed down and pulled over to the side of the road, trying to minimize obstruction to avoid a collision.
The oncoming vehicle seemed out of control and showed no intention of slowing down, getting closer and closer to the ambulance.
"What is it doing?"
It looked like the car was heading straight for the ambulance!
Before the driver could finish speaking, a loud "bang" echoed as a massive collision occurred, followed by a series of other sounds. Inside the ambulance, Zhu Junjie realized that a crash had happened as soon as he heard the first impact. Without thinking, he lunged onto the stretcher to protect Mong Si.
The ambulance had already stopped at the roadside when the other vehicle crashed into it with tremendous force, causing it to flip over. Zhu Junjie struggled to stabilize the stretcher but could only shield Mong Si from debris or further impacts.
"Bang!"
The black SUV showed no signs of letting up; it steadied itself and rammed into the overturned ambulance again. The ambulance was crushed under the force.
Zhu Junjie had no idea what was happening outside; he laboriously dragged Mong Si to the back of the vehicle, trying to open the door to escape. The impacts showed no signs of stopping, and it felt like the ambulance could fall apart at any moment.
He could faintly smell gasoline; the fuel tank might have been damaged. If they stayed in the vehicle any longer, it could catch fire and explode, leaving them with no way out.
The ambulance was already deformed as Zhu Junjie reached for the door, struggling to open it. Just as he managed to push it open half a meter wide—barely enough for one person—the vehicle was struck again. Zhu Junjie’s body slammed against the interior wall of the ambulance.
This time, the other vehicle did not stop its assault; it pressed harder on the accelerator in an attempt to crush the ambulance's cabin. As the two vehicles scraped against each other, sparks flew and ignited the gasoline, flames erupting instantly. Both the ambulance and the other vehicle caught fire simultaneously.
