The new recruits gathered in small groups, occasionally glancing at the veterans around them, who resembled refugees as they continuously stuffed food into their mouths. They felt a mix of anticipation and fear. 0

They looked forward to going to battle, to kill enemies and achieve glory. This desire had never faded throughout China's thousands of years of cultural heritage, but they also felt a sense of dread. 0

The veterans around them had no clean spots on their bodies; not a single person was whole. Each bore some injury, with bandages wrapped around their arms and thighs, which could be considered lightly wounded. Many had their heads wrapped up like zongzi, with one eye blinded or an ear missing. The most terrifying were those who were clearly missing an arm yet still used their legs to hold bowls, shoveling food into their mouths with one hand. 0

The veterans paid no attention to the recruits' unease; their eyes were solely focused on the food. After being hungry all day, they urgently needed to replenish their strength and rest after eating. 0

Tie Zhu had sustained a minor injury on his arm, simply bandaged up. He held a bowl of food in one hand and a gun in the other, finding a secluded corner where he lowered his head and ate quietly, making no sound except for the crunching of food. 0

Not only had Shunliu Brother left, but several other recruits who had enlisted and joined the unit with him were also gone. After circling around, he found that few familiar faces remained. 0

Suppressing his sorrow, he greeted a few acquaintances but struggled to control his emotions. 0

His mouth was stuffed with various foods; he wasn't actually hungry but pretended to eat so that no one would notice his tears. Many veterans were doing the same, but in the dim light, no one could tell whether it was tears or sweat—or something else entirely. 0

This meal was the best Tie Zhu had seen since joining the army; there was meat and steamed buns, and there was plenty of meat. 0

Yet this meal was also the hardest for Tie Zhu to swallow. He felt as if every piece of meat was made from his fallen comrades—there was Shunliu Brother's, Er Gouzi's, Liuzi's... 0

With each bite into the bun, Tie Zhu felt as if he were biting into his own heart, causing him great pain. 0

"Stop crying, kid. Eat well; fill your stomach so you have strength for revenge!" Wang Jinguo from One Team spotted Tie Zhu from afar. Upon searching for Wang Shunliu and not finding him, he immediately realized what had happened. In such an environment, if someone was missing, it meant sacrifice. 0

"Mm!" Tie Zhu did not lift his head, but nodded vigorously. He then bit into the white steamed bun as if it were his enemy, chewing it fiercely. Slowly, he raised his head and chewed with big bites, two crystal tears sliding down the corners of his eyes. 0

It felt like a meal lasted a day, a year, or even longer. When Tie Zhu saw that his bowl and hands were empty, he slowly stood up, wiped his mouth with the already smoke-blackened Military Uniform, picked up the weapon that was placed aside, and returned to the Small Building where Hu Lian was holding a meeting. 0

Almost all the Kuomintang Soldiers in the city had gathered here. The new recruits and veterans were clearly divided into two groups. Excluding the ten or so responsible for guarding, there were about a thousand people left. Tie Zhu could not count exactly how many there were. He sat on a stone, leaning against a pillar, squinting his eyes to rest. Although it had only been dark for a short while, the high-intensity combat throughout the day had left him extremely fatigued. 0

This book is difficult to write. Sigh, I really didn't intend to abandon it; it's just hard to write. I've seen many people encourage me to continue writing. I will keep updating, but updates may be slower, so please don't mind. 0
