San Chun struggled as he held her tightly, "Let go of me."
Qing did not allow her to break free; in this state, many outside would guess she was a woman.
He slapped her hard on the back, "Be good."
San Chun indeed became a bit more obedient, perhaps the slap had sobered her up.
Many warriors from the Fengling Duke's Residence gathered around, praising San Chun for her dance. Some even tried to pull off the clothing she had draped over her head, but were blocked by Qing.
At that moment, several people suddenly walked out from the partition of the tavern. The one at the front wore a snow-white robe, immaculate and with a gentle smile curving at the corners of his mouth, looking very amiable. Since it was night, he appeared particularly relaxed, with his black hair flowing freely, giving him an ethereal look.
The group of warriors recognized this person and hurried over to pay their respects, "Your Highness, peace be upon you."
Ji Xun nodded slightly, "What are you all doing?"
Young Master Zhao, known for his kindness towards others, replied with a smile, "Just drinking and singing."
"Who was singing just now?"
"Cheng Ming," a friend answered on behalf of the group.
Cheng Ming was already drunk and slumped over; someone tried to help him up but he immediately flopped down again.
Ji Xun raised an eyebrow slightly, "Was the dancer also him?"
Before the friend could respond, Qing said, "Yes."
Ji Xun couldn't help but show disappointment on his face. Earlier, he had been drinking with a few friends in the partition when he heard the singing and was reminded of a moment from the past when he held hands with that person by the river:
It was early March in the lunar calendar when he planned to see the Peony flowers bloom.
As they stepped out, they ran into Zhong Xue, who was returning from an outing. Upon seeing them, she said, "The newly planted Peony by the Sishui River is truly beautiful; you should go take a look."
She smiled lightly, "Yes, let's go together."
Zhong Xue was very willing and laughed as she followed behind her. He secretly resented how perceptive Wei Kingdom's people were; even from such a distance, they could sense what they were up to.
At that time, Zhong Xue had been waiting at the door for nearly an hour, just hoping for a chance encounter as they came out.
By the Sishui River, they held fragrant herbs, weaving through the bustling crowd, feeling the breath of spring and enjoying the sweetness of love. He picked a Peony and tucked it behind her ear, filled with tenderness.
He asked, "Does A-Dan like it?"
She smiled and nodded, but then pointed to the water, "If only there were fish and meat to accompany it, along with fine wine, my heart would be even happier."
Just as she finished speaking, a splash echoed as Zhong Xue jumped into the water. Moments later, he emerged holding a plump Grass Carp, grinning at her with a mouthful of white teeth.
At that moment, her smile was exceptionally radiant, even brighter than the sun above. However, later when Zhong Xue climbed back onto the shore, he twisted his ankle and fell back into the river. In a panic, she jumped in to save him, regardless of whether she could swim. They both cried for help until he jumped in to rescue them. He was already in poor health, and for the following week he had a high fever that wouldn't subside. She took care of him attentively by his bedside, which only deepened their feelings for each other, causing Zhong Xue to stomp his feet in frustration.
Later he learned that on that day Zhong Xue had submerged himself intentionally to stir her compassion. But who would have thought that things would turn out this way? It ultimately led to their union; he must have regretted it deeply at that time.
It was also because he heard a song that he recalled these past events. Feeling nostalgic, he looked outside and his gaze fell upon the dancers in the hall. The moment he saw her, his heart raced violently as if it would leap out of his chest. He hurriedly bid farewell to his friends, eager to see more.
Only she... could dance a love song so deeply felt; only she could shine so brightly with every movement, dazzling like stars and moons.
Thinking of her, a subtle glow seemed to flow over his skin, and his eyes sparkled with a thousand hues of glass. But when he clearly saw Cheng Ming, that light faded away, replaced by a deep disappointment. The drunken Cheng Ming before him was clearly not the one from his memories—the extraordinary Crown Prince Yan.
Could it be that the graceful figure he had just seen was merely an illusion?
With a faint pain in his heart, he turned to leave, his steps slightly unsteady. Was he too infatuated? Infatuated enough to believe she was still alive and would dance the Lingbo Dance for him again...
When most of the people in the tavern had dispersed, Qing walked out with San Chun. Once they were far enough away from the tavern's sign Midnight, he pushed her away.
San Chun took several deep breaths of fresh air; it was hard to tell if she was drunk or just suffocated, her face flushed bright red.
She pointed her jade finger at Qing, nearly poking him in the nose, and angrily asked, "Are you trying to suffocate me by covering my mouth like that?"
Qing glared at her, fire flashing in his eyes. "Look at you! If I hadn't covered for you early on, you would have been discovered! Do you know what crime it is for a woman to disguise herself as a man?"
San Chun froze for a moment. "What crime is that?"
"That's a serious offense; it could lead to being executed by dismemberment."
Qing said this purely to scare her. In this era, there were clear boundaries between men and women; he had never heard of any woman disguising herself as a man or any such punishment being enacted. Unfortunately for San Chun, she had forgotten her past and didn't know whether such rules existed; she was genuinely frightened.
She hurriedly said, "I won't dare anymore."
Qing then softened his expression, dismissed the other warriors, and took her back to Fengling Jun's Residence.
Feng Lingjun had prepared a room for them in the residence. Although it was just a single room for the two of them, it was still considered a relatively good arrangement among warriors. Little did they know that warriors were also ranked; only first-class warriors could have a room to themselves, while many others shared rooms with three or four people. San Chun originally didn't want to squeeze into one room with him, but as soon as they entered the residence, they had already been promoted to second-class, which was quite rare. If they wanted to request a room change from Feng Lingjun, it would be overstepping their bounds.
Fortunately, when they were in the village, they had shared a room before, so it wasn't too awkward. However, when it came time for bed, San Chun still symbolically hugged the blanket tightly and pretended to nervously ask him, "You won't violate me, right?"
Qing glared at her fiercely, really wanting to just strangle her. If he wanted to violate her, he would have done so long ago; why wait until now? He was more afraid that she wouldn't be able to sleep at night and would sneak over to his bed.
He remembered when she had just woken up; she felt uneasy about everything and could only fall asleep by holding his hand. She was afraid he would run away and forced him to tie their wrists together with a rope so that if she pulled on it, she could bring him right in front of her.
By nightfall, he couldn't even touch the bed and had to sit under it, stretching out his arm to guard her. When he was extremely tired, his head bobbed up and down like a nodding bug. For an entire month, he couldn't get a good night's sleep because of this; he had made Zhu quite jealous, blaming him for being kinder to an unfamiliar woman than to her.
In his heart, he felt wronged and struggled under the influence of two women. In the end, he could only ignore San Chun. Looking back now, although she was clingy back then, she was much cuter than her current sharp-tongued demeanor.
The night passed peacefully without incident; the worries of Azure Wind Antelope did not come true. San Chun slept soundly until dawn when she finally opened her eyes.
