San Chun came in from outside just in time to hear his curses, and she couldn't help but stop in her tracks. To be honest, she really didn't know how to face him.
She had someone bring food inside while she hid alone in a corner. As soon as she entered, she heard a series of loud noises, and Zhong Xue's voice said, "Call San Chun here, or I won't eat."
The soldier curled his lip. "If you don't want to eat, then don't. You won't starve to death after missing a meal."
Zhong Xue was furious inside; that Girl really had no conscience at all. She used her beauty to manipulate him, and now she wanted him to starve?
He gritted his teeth and shouted loudly, "Stinky Girl, come out here! Otherwise, I'll flatten this place!"
San Chun dared not go out; after all the wrongs she had done, how could she face him? She made a gesture to another soldier, who nodded and went inside to tell the other soldier, "Why waste words with him? Just gag him." He really stuffed the cloth San Chun had prepared into Zhong Xue's mouth.
San Chun breathed a sigh of relief. Zhong Xue was the smartest one around; his mouth was second best. If he could talk freely, he might really convince these soldiers to let him go and even throw in some travel expenses and compensation for mental distress. She just didn't know if they could afford it given his status.
Zhong Xue was so angry that his face turned green. He never expected her to invest so much effort into achieving her goals, even sacrificing her looks. He snorted twice; that stinky Girl dared to fool him like this. He would make her understand what it meant to settle accounts after the autumn harvest.
This Girl wasn't that bad; she wouldn't truly endanger his life. However, some torment was inevitable. He firmly believed that the idea of gagging him was hers. Now he couldn't move his body or even speak; escaping would be quite difficult.
He secretly resented Kazama. How could he not find him after searching for so long? It was really unfortunate that he had eaten so much these days.
Actually, it wasn't entirely Kazama's fault. Last night, Lord Jun ordered everyone to leave, and no one knew what happened in the room. By the time they discovered someone was missing, the entire Prefectural Office was in chaos. The city gates were tightly shut, and officials were searching house by house throughout the city. But no matter how hard they searched, they couldn't find anyone related to Lord Jun. He believed that they hadn't left the city yet; with the gates closed, even those with connections wouldn't be able to rush out.
But if they hadn't left the city, where could they be?
Kazama was flailing around like a headless fly in a panic, sending out several groups of people without any news. He knew this matter was closely related to San Chun, as only she could catch Lord Jun off guard. But now he couldn't find San Chun. Where on earth was she hiding?
He went to find Dong Cheng, knowing that this strategist had the most cunning mind and might have some ideas.
While they were discussing it, Vice Commander Cheng Ping pushed the door open and entered while cursing, "Damn it! This is just ridiculous! We've searched every nook and cranny in the city and still haven't found anyone."
Kazama frowned, "Just talking nonsense. What do you mean by digging a mouse hole? Is Lord Jun a mouse?"
Cheng Ping grinned; he was a rough man and didn't care whether his words were appropriate or not.
Dong Cheng asked, "What places have you searched?"
"Inns, private residences, official residences, restaurants—I've searched every place where people can stay."
Places where people can stay? Dong Cheng's mind stirred. "Have you checked places where people can't stay?"
Cheng Ping was puzzled. "What kind of places are those?"
"For example, warehouses, rice storages, granaries, as well as stables and cow sheds."
Cheng Ping thought to himself that it was wrong to say he was digging a mouse hole; now that they were looking in stables and cow sheds, wasn't that implying Lord Jun was a cow or a horse?
However, due to Dong Cheng's status, he didn't dare to confront him directly. He quickly said, "I'll go right away." Wiping the sweat from his brow, he hurried out.
In the city, they began searching warehouses and granaries again, thoroughly combing through all the places where people couldn't stay.
San Chun initially thought that with Zhong Xue absent and her few capable sages not around, the Prefectural Office would be in chaos. To her surprise, someone clever thought of checking the warehouses. Fortunately, she had stationed someone at the street corner to keep watch and saw the officers coming from afar, quickly returning to report.
San Chun ordered someone to carry Zhong Xue and escape through a hole in the back of the warehouse.
Having spent a long time with Zhong Xue, she had learned some of his ways of handling matters. He always said that one should never leave only one escape route unless one was prepared to die.
So after entering this old warehouse, she had someone carve a hole in the wall. The location of the hole was very obscure; covered with reed mats, it would be nearly invisible unless someone specifically looked for it.
They crawled out through the hole and managed to pull Zhong Xue out along with them.
Because of this, Zhong Xue finally saw San Chun. Upon seeing her face painted in such an ugly way, he felt as if he was about to suffocate from the disappointment. Looking at her like this, the humiliation of being dragged out of the hole faded considerably. She had made herself look like this; what good could he possibly have? Besides, he had already endured so much humiliation while being a hostage before, so what difference did one more instance make?
He closed his eyes and began to doze off. Since he couldn't escape, it was better to rest his mind.
Unfortunately, at such a time, even if he wanted to rest, he couldn't. These brainless individuals were bumping into him everywhere. One moment of carelessness and he crashed into a wall with a loud "bang," then hit a pillar. Although wrapped in blankets, he still ended up bruised all over, with a large bump forming on his forehead.
He felt as if his teeth were about to shatter. How many lifetimes did he owe her that he had to suffer like this in this life to repay it?
San Chun was also feeling distressed; she was upset inside. They had been dodging and weaving, and it seemed they could encounter officials no matter where they went. If this continued, it was only a matter of time before they were caught. Unable to find a place to hide, she anxiously thought that the only option left was to take them to Young Master Rong's residence.
Young Master Rong really didn't want to cause trouble. Seeing these people barging in, he couldn't help but smile wryly. "Did you come to the wrong place?"
San Chun smiled ingratiatingly, "Of course not. I came to visit my good brother."
Seeing the bundles on their backs, Young Master Rong immediately guessed who they were carrying. While he welcomed a visit from a brother, bringing back trouble would certainly frustrate him.
San Chun ignored his helplessness and said with a smile, "Young Master Rong, there are so many officials outside; if we go out now, you might get implicated too. And if we accidentally let something slip and expose you, that wouldn't be good."
This was an outright threat. Young Master Rong naturally understood this logic; whether he sheltered them or kicked them out now would likely implicate him either way. Seeing how she clearly intended to drag him into this mess made it impossible for him to extricate himself.
At this point, he could only smile bitterly and welcome them in, inwardly cursing: A woman can be so unreasonable; no wonder Chengyang Jun has been subdued by her.
Without waiting for the host's invitation, San Chun ordered people to take Zhong Xue directly to the guest room. Upon opening the bundle and seeing Zhong Xue's battered state with bruises all over, she couldn't help but click her tongue.
He had a large bump on his forehead, his left cheek was swollen significantly, and there were bruises on his shoulder as well. His skin was usually delicate; even slight injuries would cause redness and swelling, making him look quite alarming.
Feeling a twinge of pain in her heart, she regretted torturing him like this. After all, how could they treat someone like this? Did they not need to spend money on medical treatment after beating him up so badly?
As soon as the cloth from Zhong Xue's mouth was removed, he immediately snorted through his nose and said, "Are you satisfied with what you see?"
San Chun lowered her head, unsure if it was guilt or shyness. "This is my fault, but I had no choice. If you hadn't pressured the Yan Kingdom so much, this wouldn't have happened."
"Are you saying there wouldn't have been any romantic advances?"
"Perhaps." She wasn't sure; at the very least, she wouldn't have had to go to such lengths to entice him.
He sneered, and after laughing, found it uninteresting. Being tormented by this girl was indeed his downfall.
"Tell me, what do you really want by trapping me here?"
San Chun found his bare body quite bothersome. As he spoke, his body trembled slightly, and the two pink circles on his chest seemed to move as well.
Remembering how she had kissed him the night before, her face flushed. "Could you put on some clothes?"
Zhong Xue was almost amused with anger. Did he not want to wear clothes? Had she ever given him any?
He sneered again. "You've done everything already; why be shy now?"
There was no time to bicker with him about that. She said, "I only ask one thing: withdraw your troops from Jian City."
"You want me to miss out on a juicy piece of meat? What benefit do I get from that?"
"If you spare Jian City, the Yan Kingdom is willing to assist you in attacking the Chu Kingdom."
"Oh?" Zhong Xue raised an eyebrow. "You make such a decision quite readily. Do you know what the consequences of this will be?"
She had already considered the consequences. The Wei Army and the Chu Army would inevitably go to war. Even without the Yan Kingdom's help, the Wei Kingdom had a good chance of winning this war. Since the Chu Kingdom attacked Jian City, they would seek revenge, so it was better to join forces with the Wei Kingdom against the Chu Kingdom. This would ultimately benefit the Yan Kingdom more than it would harm them.
Zhong Xue kept watching her face, trying to discern her thoughts, but unfortunately, her disguise was too thick for him to read her expression.
He coldly said, "You promised to first consider your own identity. It doesn't matter whether you can mobilize the Yan Army or not; even if you can, matters of the battlefield are not for a woman like you to handle." Ultimately, he did not want her to return to the battlefield.
San Chun gritted her teeth and asked, "Then what do you want?"
"You." He lightly tapped her head with a finger. "If you agree to marry me, I might consider sparing Jiancheng this once."
San Chun sighed, "Lord Jun, are you pretending not to know, or do you really not understand your current situation? You are in our hands now; we can exchange your life for Jiancheng's withdrawal at any time. Lord Jun wouldn't think that your subordinates would value Jiancheng more than your life, would they?"
"Fine, then why don't you try and see if you can get me out of this predicament."
The two stared at each other, sparks flying between them, but unfortunately, it was not the spark of love.
Zhong Xue could be soft at times and hard at others; San Chun was similar. Their personalities had many similarities, and now faced with such a significant issue, it was no wonder they were at an impasse, neither willing to back down.
They glared at each other for a long time until their eyes felt sore and dry, yet neither was willing to concede. It was only when Young Master Rong sent someone to bring them food that their gazes finally broke apart.
