After a few days of covert observation, Kairuot concluded that the General of National Defense's courtyard should be an important stronghold for the Capricornian. However, their every move was under strict surveillance, making it difficult to act. Additionally, the four of them were arranged to stay in different small courtyards, making it quite challenging to gather and discuss matters.
After breakfast, Li Girl insisted on going for a stroll on Chang'an Street to relax, claiming that staying cooped up in the courtyard all day was driving her crazy. Although Chang'an Street had undergone significant demolition, a portion of it remained intact. This part of the street had more concentrated shops, resulting in a bustling crowd and an unusually lively atmosphere.
Kairuot specifically chose a relatively quiet teahouse to sit down. However, Belt couldn't settle down because he came to Chang'an looking for a good place to settle down. He had already found a courtyard yesterday and had nearly finalized the deal; he just needed to pay today to move in. Therefore, Bel Purewood accompanied Belt to discuss the purchase of the courtyard. This left Kairuot and Li Girl alone in the teahouse. Noticing that no one was around, Li Girl took out the wristband her father had given her yesterday to show Kairuot.
Kairuot examined the wristband carefully for a while and said, "This is a Communication Positioning Wristband. If this wristband works on Earth, then the Capricornian must have a base station within Chang'an City; they will definitely be able to locate us wherever we go."
"Can you turn it off?"
"I'll give it a try; it must have a switch."
Kairuot fiddled with the wristband for a while and finally found the switch, turning it off. After turning off the wristband, Kairuot alertly said to Lily, "They already know we're here; we need to move to another location quickly."
The two quickly left the teahouse and headed towards the courtyard that Belt had previously agreed upon.
The courtyard purchased by Belt belonged to a minister who was relocating his family to Luoyang due to the transfer of the Chang'an government. Although his courtyard had not been demolished, it was unoccupied and he had no choice but to sell it at a low price. It was fortunate for him to encounter someone like Belt who was willing to buy it; negotiations went smoothly. By the time Kairuot and Lily arrived, the courtyard already belonged to Belt.
Because Belt offered a fair price, the minister gifted him all the furniture, household items, and any remaining servants or maids in the courtyard, saving Belt quite a bit of trouble.
As soon as Kairuot and Lily arrived at Belt's courtyard and sat down in the hall, a maid brought them tea. Belt had just purchased this estate and had many matters to attend to. Only Kairuot, Li Girl, and Bel Purewood were present in the hall.
Kairuot noticed that the maid had left and said to the two seated with him, "I can conclude that this General of National Defense's estate is likely an extremely important stronghold for the Capricornian. We need to find a way to destroy it."
Bel Purewood shook his head and replied, "It will be very difficult to destroy their stronghold. The moment we entered the estate, we were under their watchful eyes, making it impossible for you to find any opportunity."
Li Girl said, "I do know they have a secret chamber... perhaps we could enter their stronghold through that secret chamber."
Kairuot pondered for a moment and said, "Since they let you know about the secret chamber, they certainly won't allow you to enter easily. These two elderly people are very cautious in their words and actions; it would be impossible to launch a surprise attack on their stronghold. I believe they won't let us stay in this estate for long; it poses a threat to them, and they will likely take action soon to eliminate us."
"They want to eliminate us?" Li Girl asked, confused. "That's easy enough; they could just poison us directly without going through all this trouble."
"They also want to figure out our purpose for coming to Earth," Kairuot explained. "Moreover, we haven't exposed their couple identity yet; they still want to extract information about the Martians from Li Girl. When they realize they can't obtain anything from us, that's when they'll likely take action."
Li Girl asked, "So... what should we do next?"
Kairuot replied, "Let's wait and see how things unfold. I have a feeling they might act within the next few days. Be extra cautious with any food they send over during this time; try to use your internal energy to reject or isolate anything you eat. Don't indulge too much; don't let a moment of carelessness lead you into their trap. If you're really hungry, bring some food with you and eat quietly; focus on filling your stomach."
"I can go out to eat," Li Girl said. "I won't go hungry that way."
"I'm afraid they won't let us out again after this," Kairuot predicted. "The reason we could come out today is that the two elderly people are not here. Once they return, they'll surely scold the servants for letting us out and ruining their plans. Belt won't be coming back with us this time; I don't want him getting involved in our mess."
Sure enough, as Kairuot anticipated, once they returned, the main gate of the General of National Defense's estate was closed. Anyone wishing to go outside now needed approval from the two elderly people. The servants and maids worked cautiously, and the entire estate was shrouded in an eerie atmosphere.
Today's dinner was particularly lavish, specially procured by the Belron Couple from the city. They also bought several barrels of red wine for everyone to enjoy freely. The two elders, behaving unusually, personally served wine and toasted to everyone. In no time, several barrels were emptied. Kairuot, Li Girl, and Bel Purewood were even more intoxicated than last time, sprawled on the dining table, completely unconscious.
Seeing the three in such a state, Belron thought the drug in the wine had taken effect. He signaled, and immediately many people rushed out from behind the screen to swiftly carry the three into a secret passage. After winding through several turns, they arrived at a modern laboratory with steel walls. The bright lights illuminated the lab as if it were daytime, a stark contrast to the oil lamps used outside.
Under the direction of a person in a white lab coat, Kairuot and the others were placed onto platforms connected to machines. As soon as the doors of the laboratory closed and they entered the machines, all three almost simultaneously regained consciousness. The aliens operating the machines realized something was wrong and attempted to escape, but it was too late—Kairuot and his companions were skilled fighters and quickly subdued them. Kairuot intended to interrogate the aliens, but all three aliens bit down on something and committed suicide.
Kairuot said to Li Girl, "They wanted to install a Human Motion Controller in our brains, right? Heh heh. This is their laboratory; destroying it would be a good deed."
As he spoke, he struck a nearby machine with his palm. With a loud bang, that machine was rendered useless. Li Girl and Bel Purewood quickly destroyed the other two machines as well.
At that moment, all the lights in the laboratory suddenly went out, plunging the room into darkness. Kairuot sensed an imminent attack from Capricornian forces and quickly urged his companions to take cover—sure enough, arrows shot out from wall openings at different angles. These cold weapons posed little threat to Kairuot and his friends, who then engaged in fierce combat with Capricornians throughout the laboratory and secret passage until all enemies were eliminated. They then emerged above ground to search for the elderly couple, only to find that Belron Couple had already committed suicide in their throne chairs.
It seemed that Belche had injected something into their minds; as long as they failed, they would have to die.
