At Kureying Mountain Pass, there is a 1.7-mile walking path, and many people choose to hike along it. Bai Yujing walked with Emma to the halfway point and paused to admire the scenery of the Mountain Valley around them.
Bai Yujing lifted the camera hanging from his chest and began capturing the surrounding landscape. He took many pictures today, snapping shots whenever they passed through areas dense with Mountain Valley. This way, he could review them later to ensure he hadn't missed anything.
At the halfway point, they could see the Mountain Valley below, dotted with lakes of various sizes. The view was spectacular; the peaks here seemed to have been eroded by the wind, yet there was no sign of soil erosion. The unique geographical features combined with the lush green environment made it feel as if they had arrived on another planet.
"Meh!"
It seemed that they had a special connection with sheep along the way, encountering them more or less frequently. In addition, there were many yaks on Sky Island. The sheep they encountered at Kureying Mountain Pass felt somewhat different from those before.
These sheep were entirely snow-white, with black limbs and heads, looking very cute and silly, completely unafraid of heights as they leisurely wandered around the halfway point.
Bai Yujing suddenly remembered what they were: "Shaun the Sheep!"
Wasn't this just the main character from the animated series Shaun the Sheep? They looked exactly alike and were equally adorable. It was later adapted into a feature film of the same name. Bai Yujing had watched it with his little cousin, so he had some impression of it.
Emma heard Bai Yujing's voice and said, "This is a Scottish Blackface Sheep, a unique breed of sheep from Scotland."
I must say, these little guys were born with good looks—soft white bodies paired with pitch-black faces that made them seem quite endearing. Emma told Bai Yujing not to scare the flock while on the mountain; otherwise, if startled, they might jump off a cliff, which was different from previous areas.
Bai Yujing then gave up on taking pictures with these uniquely Scottish black-faced sheep and snapped a few photos instead before continuing up the mountain.
After a long ascent, they finally reached the summit. It felt like conquering the stars and the sea; standing at the top allowed Bai Yujing to see all around him. It reminded him of a line from a poem: "To reach the top is to overlook all other mountains."
By this time, it was getting late; the sky was no longer bright. The entire sky and earth had fallen into a dim world, with clouds in the sky glowing with fiery colors.
The whole world seemed to transform into a fantastical realm—epic mountains stretching endlessly alongside various lakes in the Mountain Valley, fiery clouds casting yellow hues upon the earth. The pristine scenery bore no trace of human presence, making one suddenly question whether they had crossed over to another planet.
"Oh my God, we are so lucky to witness such a sight," Emma exclaimed in disbelief. Such weather and scenery were hard to come by; one might only encounter it a few times in a year, and it was brief—only visible at dusk.
Bai Yujing picked up his camera: "It seems we are favored by Lady Luck."
The surrounding tourists were also very excited, not expecting to encounter such a scene, which was breathtakingly beautiful. This magnificent sight, where nature and seasonal weather merged together, was enough to leave a lasting impression for a lifetime.
Bai Yujing was fortunate to capture this moment with his camera, but unfortunately, he had not brought a tripod, otherwise he could have taken a photo with Emma.
Following this beautiful scene was the still bright sky. Bai Yujing and Emma watched the surrounding Mountain Valley together while comparing it with Lemuel Gulliver's notes. After surveying the area, they still had not found a similar environment.
Emma felt a bit disappointed: "We've looked at so many places, yet we still haven't found anything similar. Could it be that the geographical environment has changed over the past two hundred years?"
Bai Yujing shook his head: "That seems unlikely. In two hundred years, changes shouldn't be too significant. There are no signs of human destruction of the environment here, but it's possible that the original Mountain Valley has now become part of a settlement."
Bai Yujing hugged Emma: "Emma, don't worry. Let's treat this as a trip. We'll explore Sky Island first. Tonight, I'll compare the photos to see if there's anything we've missed. If we still haven't found anything, we can check which settlements and buildings have appeared on Skye Island in the last two hundred years. I'm sure we'll find something."
Emma nodded: "Alright, Ian, I believe in you!"
After running around all day and then hiking down Shanxia Mountain, Bai Yujing felt sore all over. Although his physique had been enhanced and he still had plenty of strength and energy, the muscle soreness was unavoidable since he hadn't exercised much before.
As night fell, both Bai Yujing and Emma felt hungry and empty in their stomachs. Moreover, there had been no restrooms along the way on the island. Although they were aware of this situation and had controlled their diet and drank river water, it was about time to find a place to rest.
Uig was a small village very close by. This village was indeed small, with scattered houses lining both sides of the Highway. It wasn't until they approached the center of the village that they saw continuous streets. The town had a gas station, convenience store, and a few restaurants; beyond that, there were no other businesses.
Uig was a tiny port where Bai Yujing saw unicycles and cargo ships docked. The pier extended into the center of the bay. In Bai Yujing's mind, piers were usually synonymous with noise and dense populations; however, while there were quite a few people here, it wasn't as crowded as he had imagined.
Bai Yujing and Emma ordered a simple meal here. Since they had eaten Chinese food for lunch, having this simple meal now made Bai Yujing feel much better; it had a flavorful taste.
Bai Yujing ordered traditional Italian pizza. After exercising and feeling empty in his stomach, everything tasted better. This pizza, which was originally quite ordinary at this place, almost made Bai Yujing lick his fingers; it felt like an exquisite delicacy.
"I've noticed your appetite has really increased," Emma said to Bai Yujing. As a fitness enthusiast, she immediately began to remind him again about maintaining exercise to avoid gaining weight.
Bai Yujing nodded: "By the way, I remember you studied kickboxing; could you teach me?"
"Sure! Tomorrow morning when we go for a run, I can teach you then. However, I'm not a professional; if you want to learn real combat skills, I can introduce you to my instructor." Emma was pleased to see that Bai Yujing took her advice seriously.
Bai Yujing stuffed the last big piece of pizza into his mouth and asked Emma, "Is it difficult to join the Endangered Species Conservation Organization you’re part of?"
Emma immediately covered her mouth in surprise after hearing this. "Oh my gosh, do you want to join too? Of course, while the process is quite challenging, I will do my best to help you."
Bai Yujing thought about this for a long time. He felt that joining this organization would allow him to encounter more species and learn more knowledge in this area, which would greatly help him understand Exotic Creatures and gain information. Although there was the bug-level existence of the Exotic Creature Hunter System, finding Exotic Creatures still required strong personal abilities and information channels.
Therefore, joining the Endangered Species Conservation Organization would be very beneficial for Bai Yujing. Emma was thrilled that Bai Yujing could relate to her and wanted to join the endangered species organization. She looked at Bai Yujing with sparkling eyes, waiting for his response. Bai Yujing looked at Emma and nodded, "I also aspire to travel around the world like you, collecting data on endangered animals, observing their living habits, and changing their living environments. However, I'm not sure how to join this organization or what obligations and responsibilities it entails. Could you tell me about it?"
Emma nodded. "Of course! To join the organization, first, you need an internal sponsor. Second, you must pass the organization's exam. Third, having a good resume will increase your chances of passing the review."
Bai Yujing scratched his head, not expecting it to be so complicated. "Do I really have to take an exam? What does a good resume mean?"
Emma explained, "The exam is quite simple; it consists of a personality and behavior assessment. A good resume means having no history of indiscriminately killing animals, among other things. Of course, if you have special skills or financial resources, that will also earn you extra points."
"Additionally, once you join the organization, external members must participate in at least one task assigned by the organization each year within a month. Formal members are employees of the organization who generally have ongoing tasks assigned or are stationed at branches in various countries, or they may become researchers at research institutes or staff at animal breeding centers."
Bai Yujing felt that this organization seemed even larger than he had imagined. According to Emma, they had branches in various countries and numerous research institutes, animal breeding centers, rescue stations, and medical facilities under their umbrella. It sounded high-end and sophisticated, which aligned perfectly with Bai Yujing's aspirations. He nodded and said, "Alright, it seems quite challenging, but I'm willing to give it a try."
Emma was overjoyed. "That's wonderful!"
Bai Yujing and Emma found common ground again and fell into an enthusiastic discussion.
