On the way back, looking at Lin Ruoqiao's indifferent expression, Bai Yujing said with a stern face, "You did that on purpose, didn't you?"
Lin Ruoqiao immediately looked innocent and said, "How could that be? Why would I do that? Clearly, they were in the wrong. I just accidentally spilled soy milk on them, and they grabbed me. I couldn't help it and slapped them twice!"
Bai Yujing was too lazy to argue with her. Given Lin Ruoqiao's skills, if she hadn't been cornered in a dead end earlier, Bai Yujing wouldn't have been able to catch her at all. "I have a question for you. I saw a blue tattoo on your ankle before, but now it's gone. Do you know what happened?"
Lin Ruoqiao looked surprised. "You saw it too?"
Then she quickly added, "I'm not really sure. I noticed a mark on my ankle occasionally, but then it disappeared when I looked again. It happened several times, and I thought I was just seeing things!"
Bai Yujing felt a bit disappointed. "You don't know either? Can you tell me about your identity?"
Lin Ruoqiao warily glanced at Bai Yujing. "What exactly do you want? I've felt something was off about you two since daytime, especially Little Li, who kept asking me about my background as if I wouldn't notice. I thought I'd have to create some trouble for you to get you to talk, but it seems like you couldn't hold back so soon."
Li Hao suddenly felt awkward; being outsmarted by a fifteen or sixteen-year-old girl was quite the experience. Bai Yujing wanted to interview him about it, but for now, to clarify the situation, she could only let Li Hao take the lead.
Lin Ruoqiao looked at the mark on Li Hao's left ankle and nodded. "That's right, it's this one. Little Li, how do you have one too?"
Li Hao angrily retorted, "My name is Li Hao! Don't give people nicknames casually; do you think you're too good for that?"
Bai Yujing intervened to organize their argument. "You two calm down; let's first figure out the origin of this mark. Lin Ruoqiao, do you know where this mark comes from?"
Lin Ruoqiao shook her head. Bai Yujing had somewhat understood this troublesome girl's background. According to her story, she was from Qinzhou but lost her mother to illness when she was young and later moved to Nanning with her father. A couple of years ago, her father found her a stepmother, which Lin Ruoqiao couldn't accept due to her temperament. She dropped out of school and fell out with her father before entering this line of work through some old friends, starting the carefree and thrilling life she described.
"If you get caught, you won't be so carefree anymore; I think you should be sent in right now!" Bai Yujing said irritably as Lin Ruoqiao spoke proudly of her skills and experiences.
Lin Ruoqiao shouted loudly, "If it weren't for my bad luck, you two would never have caught me! Just pick any car on this road; I guarantee I can open it within a minute! With a car and my skills, no one around here could catch me."
Bai Yujing and Li Hao exchanged glances with dark expressions; Bai Yujing felt that she couldn't get anything useful from Lin Ruoqiao either. This girl clearly had no idea what was going on and was just a typical troublemaker with late-stage teenage rebellion.
Lin Ruoqiao told Bai Yujing that the mark seemed to only appear when she experienced intense emotional fluctuations; otherwise, it was invisible. Bai Yujing glanced at Li Hao and wondered why his mark had stabilized—was it an age issue? After understanding the situation, Bai Yujing said to Lin Ruoqiao, "Thank you for spending the day with us today; we'll say goodbye here. If there's nothing else in the future, please don't contact us again!"
Lin Ruoqiao immediately became unhappy. "Isn't that a bit heartless? You ask your questions and then immediately turn your back on me?"
Bai Yujing didn't want to pay attention to her and got into the car with Li Hao. Lin Ruoqiao followed and got into the back seat. Bai Yujing immediately said, "Hey, we're going back to rest. Why are you still following us?"
"Aren't we staying at the same hotel? When you were chasing me yesterday, I left a lot of my things in the hotel!" Lin Ruoqiao quickly replied.
Bai Yujing thought for a moment and realized that was indeed the case. There was no way around it, so she let her hitch a ride.
In the lobby of the hotel presidential suite, Li Hao was still playing on his computer. Bai Yujing had just finished organizing today's pictures and articles, then sent them to her editor Xu Keke, who would check for errors and polish them before sending them out, saving Bai Yujing a lot of effort.
After finishing her work, Bai Yujing began fiddling with the pendant that Li Hao's mother had left him. This item should be a very important clue; however, despite trying many methods, Bai Yujing couldn't figure out what it was or even what material it was made of. The blue gemstone could be many types: sapphire, aquamarine, blue topaz, blue chalcedony, blue opal, etc. Bai Yujing had someone look at it, but it wasn't any of those.
Why could Li Hao hear the sound it made while she couldn't? Bai Yujing played with it in her hands when Li Hao looked over and said, "So, how is it? Isn't my family heirloom mysterious? You can't tell what it is, right?"
Bai Yujing pouted, "Who knows if you're lying to me? Maybe all those sounds are just an illusion."
At that moment, there was a sudden knock on the door. Bai Yujing opened it to see Lin Ruoqiao standing at the entrance in a set of home clothes adorned with cute strawberry patterns and bunny slippers.
As soon as Lin Ruoqiao saw the door open, she rushed inside. Bai Yujing immediately blocked the doorway, saying, "No entry for outsiders!"
Lin Ruoqiao pouted, "Hmph! You're so stingy. I just want to see how it looks inside. It's a presidential suite; I've never seen one before."
Li Hao asked from behind, "Who is it?"
Then they immediately saw Lin Ruoqiao: "What are you doing here, Old Bai? Forget it; let her in. Why are you getting upset with a little girl?"
Bai Yujing relaxed her arms and let Lin Ruoqiao in. She watched as Lin Ruoqiao moved around like Liu Laolao in Grand View Garden, covering her mouth as she looked around. She ran upstairs and then back down again, her hurried footsteps echoing throughout the room.
"This place is huge! You rich people are different; this is really extravagant!"
After exploring enough, Lin Ruoqiao sat down next to the sofa in the lobby. Her gaze suddenly caught on the pendant in Bai Yujing's hand. She leaned closer to stare at it and then shivered slightly, looking puzzled at Bai Yujing before glancing back at the pendant.
Bai Yujing immediately turned to Lin Ruoqiao as if she had discovered something: "What's wrong with you?"
Lin Ruoqiao frowned and shook her head: "It's nothing!"
"Did you hear some kind of sound?" Bai Yujing asked.
"You heard it too?" Lin Ruoqiao pointed at Bai Yujing and said.
Bai Yujing was overjoyed, "I can't hear it. It seems that only those with the mark, like you, can hear this sound. Can you tell me what you heard?"
Although Li Hao could also hear the sound, he could only hear serene music and the long waves each time. However, he couldn't make out the woman's voice clearly. Bai Yujing had been trying to understand what this woman was saying, but after listening for a while, Li Hao's head started to ache as if he had exceeded some limit, so Bai Yujing gave up on that idea.
Now that he discovered Lin Ruoqiao could also hear this sound, it was truly a pleasant surprise. Lin Ruoqiao closed her eyes to feel it and after a long while said, "It seems to be calling us back, back to a place called Borseto! It also mentioned something about Center, saying we must bring it back to Center! Many parts are still unclear."
After listening multiple times, Lin Ruoqiao also felt a headache. Bai Yujing immediately put away the pendant and moved away from Lin Ruoqiao; this symptom was exactly the same as Li Hao's before, which Bai Yujing was already familiar with.
Bai Yujing recorded all of this down, underlining Borseto and Center as key points. Then he began searching for these terms on the computer. Since they were transliterations, he tried several versions but found no satisfactory results.
As for Center, there were even more possibilities for what it represented. Who could know what it really was? It might just be a placeholder. After putting down his pen and thinking for a while without any results, he could only add it to his database.
Bai Yujing looked at the pendant, which resembled a teardrop and was completely transparent. It appeared not only beautiful and precious but also exuded a strong sense of mystery at that moment. Who was the woman speaking inside? What kind of message did she want to convey?
Suddenly, Bai Yujing saw Lin Ruoqiao's delicate ankle with the blue mark reappear. His mind raced; this mark should be inherited through bloodlines, meaning at least one of their parents must possess or be able to pass down such a mark. Li Hao's mother came from Qinzhou, and so did Lin Ruoqiao's. So where did their mothers come from in the mysterious Water Source Village?
Everything was speculation. Bai Yujing decided to hurry to Shuiyuan Village to see if he could find more clues there.
