"Do we really not need to go with you?" Emma asked Bai Yujing.
Bai Yujing put on a waterproof backpack and a tactical jacket, changing into lightweight hiking shoes. Even the pants he wore were water-resistant, as the humidity in the mountains was high, making this gear essential.
"No, I can go alone. Didn't Bethany say she wanted to go kayaking? You should take her out to have some fun today!" Bai Yujing told Emma.
Emma immediately became hesitant. "But!"
Bai Yujing hugged Emma. "It's okay, I'll bring back the Healing Spring Gold Plate!"
Bai Yujing slung the backpack over his shoulders, forgetting his camera, and set off. He drove all the way to the end of the road, where no buildings or people could be seen anymore. The road was overgrown with weeds, indicating that it had been a long time since anyone had passed through.
Continuing forward, he encountered wilderness; he truly had to climb mountains and cross ridges. Bai Yujing followed the mountain path, and when he reached impassable areas, he had to climb and scramble over them. In some places, stepping on loose stones caused them to tumble down, falling directly to the bottom of the mountain with a clear sound that was indeed thrilling.
Standing at the mountain's peak, the landscape of the Slodonia Mountains unfolded before Bai Yujing. This area was once connected to North America about 6.5 million years ago but split apart due to the formation of the Atlantic Ocean and the separation of tectonic plates. Even billions of years ago, this place was beneath the equatorial sea floor but reached its current location due to plate tectonics.
Behind him were endless layers of towering mountains, while Bai Yujing's destination lay ahead—a dark forest that stretched out before him. This was a humid prehistoric land where dense trees completely obscured the sky, contrasting sharply with the scenery of the Slodonia Mountains he had just traversed.
Bai Yujing ran down the slope; due to its steepness, his speed increased significantly, causing rocks from above to tumble down as well. Bai Yujing was startled as it seemed like a chain reaction was triggered by the rolling stones—more rocks cascaded down from the mountain. At such a height, if even one stone hit Bai Yujing, it could result in serious injury.
Terrified, Bai Yujing curled up as he slid down the slope. Fortunately, only small pebbles struck him while larger rocks rolled down into a small river below Mountain Valley, which was a stroke of luck.
Crossing the small river led him into dense woods on the other side. This river seemed like a boundary line separating two worlds; further ahead lay an untouched forest that did not belong to humanity.
"Damn it!" As Bai Yujing entered the jungle, he quickly realized that it was not as beautiful as he had imagined. The ground was covered in moss and puddles, and the humidity was overwhelming; it didn't take long for his hair to become completely soaked.
To make matters worse, there were almost no paths, making it difficult to determine his direction. Although Bai Yujing had a compass, it didn't guarantee that he could accurately find his desired location. He stepped over a piece of rotten wood and crossed wide, dense tree roots, even spotting a snake slithering out from beneath some decaying leaves.
As he ventured deeper, Bai Yujing climbed trees at higher points to observe the surrounding terrain. This method helped him confirm his position and establish a distant target, ensuring he wouldn't lose his way or miss the correct location.
Finally, in the afternoon, he found what he had been searching for: a gorge leading to the Temperate Rainforest. This was the only route into the rainforest, as Old Alje had informed him. After repeatedly checking the rough map drawn by Old Alje, he confirmed that this was indeed the right spot, and Bai Yujing couldn't help but cheer with excitement.
After spending most of the day searching, Bai Yujing felt a sense of accomplishment. As a newcomer to the jungle, he had gained some experience; if he ever entered such a Primeval Jungle again, he wouldn't be as flustered as this time.
The gorge wasn't large and was filled with dense vegetation, giving Bai Yujing the impression that he was still in the jungle without any hint of a grand gorge. At that moment, however, he heard the sound of rushing water. It sounded like there was a river nearby, and it flowed rapidly.
Continuing forward, Bai Yujing finally spotted the river within the jungle but cursed loudly when he saw it. The river completely blocked the path through the gorge; it flowed down from the mountains and occupied this area, forming a stream rushing downward.
The scenery was beautiful and the terrain unique, but if Bai Yujing wanted to get through here, he would have to wade into the cold water. Given how chilly it was in England at that time of year, entering the river was definitely not a good idea. He decided to look around for other ways to enter the rainforest.
After searching left and right, Bai Yujing ultimately gave up. At that moment, he finally understood what Mr. Old Alje had meant when he said they would have to pass through a very difficult gorge; indeed, it wasn't going to be easy.
Bai Yujing took off his backpack and removed his shirt, stuffing it inside before tossing the backpack into the water. He then clung to it like a flotation device as he swam forward.
The backpack was waterproof and sealed well enough to float steadily on the surface. Bai Yujing drifted downstream with the current. On either side of the river were dense shrubs and tall trees growing along the banks, their roots reaching into the water while many smaller roots swayed with the flow.
The icy river water made Bai Yujing shiver uncontrollably; fortunately, his body was strong enough to withstand it. Warmth surged from within him as his heart raced, pumping hot blood throughout his body. As the river turned here, the scenery suddenly opened up; no longer surrounded by dense jungle and trees, he could see directly into the blue sky. However, at that moment, Bai Yujing witnessed something perilous unfold before him.
The river ahead became swift and turbulent, and at the end, it cascaded down, forming a waterfall. Bai Yujing immediately reacted and swam toward the riverbank. However, the rushing water swept past with great force, propelling Bai Yujing toward the base of the waterfall. If swept away, Bai Yujing would be in serious trouble.
At that moment, Bai Yujing had no choice but to abandon the backpack and struggled to swim sideways toward the bank. Her legs flailed like fish in the water. Suddenly, a tree root appeared in front of her, and Bai Yujing grabbed onto it. However, the force of the water quickly uprooted it, pulling the tree root down as well. Just when Bai Yujing felt a sense of despair, she collided with a rock and immediately clung to it, stabilizing herself.
At this point, Bai Yujing had swallowed some water and was gasping for breath. The previous scene had indeed been perilous; the water was too cold. Without waiting to catch her breath, she climbed up onto the bank.
Now, Bai Yujing was bare-chested and had lost her backpack. Her shoes were truly a problem as she approached the edge of the waterfall. Looking down, she saw a waterfall over ten meters high, with a deep pool forming at its base. At that moment, her backpack was floating on top of the deep pool.
"I must find a way to get down and retrieve my backpack!" This was Bai Yujing's first thought. However, the rope was in her backpack, and from such a height, without knowing the depth of the pool below, she certainly couldn't jump down blindly.
