When Bai Yujing reached the door, he pressed the car key, and the headlights lit up. He immediately noticed a dusty handprint on his car, which, although not very conspicuous as it was located under the door, still caught his attention.
Since going through several experiences, Bai Yujing had developed some habits and had become much more vigilant. Even the slightest abnormality would now be noticed by him. He quickly bent down to look under the car and discovered a white unknown object tied underneath. The wires were tangled, and lights were flashing.
Bai Yujing knew exactly what this was; he was half scared out of his wits and blurted out, "Damn it!"
He quickly backed away, but at that moment, there was a loud explosion, and the entire car split apart in the middle. The deafening sound could be heard throughout the neighborhood. As the car exploded, flames and black smoke billowed out, and a large number of fragments flew everywhere. Bai Yujing suddenly felt a burning sensation on his back, followed by intense pain in his thigh and abdomen.
The force of the blast threw him two meters away, spinning him in mid-air. His backpack was yanked off his shoulder and flung aside. Bai Yujing was dazed from the explosion, feeling as if his head were spinning and his ears ringing.
However, he soon saw someone jump out from a flower bed in the distance. The person was wearing a construction worker's outfit and a mask, not very tall, holding a gun aimed directly at Bai Yujing.
Bai Yujing quickly reacted, rolling to the side just as several shots rang out nearby, sending dirt flying up from the grass. He stood up but realized he was limping on his left foot; any movement sent sharp pain shooting through him. Without time to assess further, he leaned against the wall for cover.
More gunfire erupted against the wall behind him, narrowly missing his shadow. If he hadn't reacted quickly earlier, he would have been riddled with bullets by now. Breathing heavily in panic, Bai Yujing looked at his abdomen; it was covered in blood along with his thigh—he had been hit by shrapnel from the explosion.
His back was also burned; part of his clothing was scorched and tattered, with numerous small wounds all over him. These attackers were ruthless; they must have been waiting for him to get into the car to ensure success. But since he hadn’t approached for a while, they couldn’t wait any longer and detonated the bomb.
Bai Yujing turned around to see what this person intended to do. As soon as he peeked out, he saw the person cautiously approaching his backpack. The moment Bai Yujing revealed himself, he was spotted immediately, and two bullets came flying toward him. He ducked behind the wall again, no longer daring to make reckless moves.
The assailant was now less than three meters away from the backpack. Bai Yujing counted silently to himself: "One, two, three!"
Once he finished counting, Bai Yujing charged out just as the person bent down to pick up the backpack. Taking advantage of the timing, Bai Yujing tackled him to the ground. He quickly pinned down the assailant's gun hand and used his larger size to keep him immobilized.
Bai Yujing pressed him down and slammed his hand against the wall, trying to knock the gun out of his grip. Unexpectedly, the guy held on tightly, allowing his palm to scrape against the concrete wall, leaving a trail of blood as he stubbornly aimed the gun at Bai Yujing.
Realizing what was happening, Bai Yujing quickly elbowed him twice in the head from above. Despite his injured leg, this position had little effect on him, and once he seized the opportunity to pin the guy down, there was almost no chance for a comeback.
At that moment, the guy suddenly shouted loudly, "Kate! Kate!"
"There's actually another accomplice?" Bai Yujing immediately saw a car coming around the corner. The window was rolled down, and the person inside was holding a steering wheel with one hand while aiming a gun at Bai Yujing with the other. This person was wearing a stocking over their head, looking just like a bank robber.
Bai Yujing quickly locked his arm around the man's neck, choking him as he turned to face the car window, making it difficult for the shooter to fire without hitting his accomplice. The shorter man tried to shout something but was unable to speak as Bai Yujing tightened his grip, causing his face to turn red.
Kate got out of the car, raising her gun to adjust her aim and attempt a flank. Bai Yujing immediately stood up while still holding onto the shorter man, turning in sync with where Kate pointed her gun.
After a few exchanges, the shorter man's grip on his gun weakened. Bai Yujing swiftly snatched the weapon from him and kicked him toward Kate. He planned to shoot them both when they were close enough.
However, Kate seemed to understand Bai Yujing's intentions and showed no concern for her accomplice being kicked toward her. She quickly fired at Bai Yujing. At the same time, Bai Yujing aimed back at her and shot her in the chest. Kate's hand trembled, causing her aim to waver slightly, but she had already pulled the trigger. Bai Yujing felt a massive impact hit his left shoulder, forcing him to stumble back two steps.
At that moment, Li Hao peeked out from his front door and shouted to Bai Yujing, "Old Bai, get inside!"
Bai Yujing immediately turned around and limped backward. Li Hao and Lin Ruoqiao each grabbed one of his arms and pulled him inside, taking cover at Li Hao's doorway to shield themselves. Outside, Kate clutched her chest in pain and shouted in English, "Get in the car! Go!"
The shorter man quickly got up from the ground. Kate fired several shots toward Bai Yujing's position, making him hesitate to poke his head out. Once they were in the car, Bai Yujing leaned out of the window and fired again. The shorter man was sitting in the passenger seat; before he could start the vehicle, Bai Yujing shot him in the head, causing him to slump against Kate's shoulder.
Kate cried out in pain but was not much better off herself. Bai Yujing fired several more shots at her. She quickly ducked her head and sped away from the scene, crashing through the side gate as they exited the neighborhood.
However, not long after they started, they stopped on the highway. It turned out that Kate, who had been shot in the chest, could no longer hold on and passed away by the roadside. The car was blocking the middle of the road, causing a massive traffic jam. Immediately, some drivers got out angrily, wanting to scold this inconsiderate person, but they were quickly frightened back by the two corpses inside the car.
Bai Yujing sat at the entrance of Li Hao's house, covered in blood, with no part of his body uninjured. He looked extremely terrifying. In addition to that, blood was continuously oozing from his shoulder, abdomen, and thigh. Li Hao brought out a first aid kit from inside the house to perform some basic treatment, but it didn't help much.
At this time, people in the neighborhood began to gather around. The recent explosions and gunfire were quite rare in the country. After the gunfire stopped, many people came over and some immediately noticed Bai Yujing and started taking pictures.
Li Hao became furious: "What are you taking pictures of? Get away! What are you doing!"
"Old Bai, hang in there! Don't die!" Li Hao patted Bai Yujing's face. Bai Yujing felt a bit more alert in his dazed state as Lin Ruoqiao drove out Li Hao's car and helped Bai Yujing into it.
"Do you have a cigarette?"
"Yes, yes!" Li Hao immediately took out a pack of yellow cigarettes from his pocket, which had two pandas printed on it!
Bai Yujing was surprised: "Wow, you have this!"
Bai Yujing rarely smoked and didn't know why he wanted to smoke at that moment. Seeing Lin Ruoqiao and Li Hao looking at him with concern, he smiled and said, "It's fine. Don't look so scared; the wounds aren't in critical places. I won't die!"
"That's good. The hospital will be here soon!"
