When Bai Yujing woke up from the sleeping bag, he happened to see Liu Xinwu, Li Xiang, and Liu Hai playing cards. Outside the tent, the sound of the storm continued to roar; it felt as if the entire tent was being crushed by the snow. The blizzard outside showed no signs of stopping and looked as fierce as ever.
Liu Xinwu was the first to notice Bai Yujing and immediately looked over. "How are you? Feeling better?"
Bai Yujing stretched his hand out from the sleeping bag. "I'm fine now, completely recovered. I feel full of energy. What about the others?"
"Zhu Wei, Wen Feng, and Zhou Jun are in another tent playing cards. It's a good thing the fat guy brought some cards; otherwise, we would have been bored to death!" Liu Xinwu said with a smile. A stove beside the tent was burning, with a red gas cylinder connected to it. This small setup was enough for Bai Yujing and the others to last a long time and spend a warm night. Without it, such low temperatures could easily lead someone to sleep through and never wake up.
Bai Yujing got up and ate something while looking at the still-blinding blizzard outside. The wind howled across the land, and he wondered when it would finally stop. If it continued like this, it would cause them significant trouble.
The blizzard lasted for two days before finally stopping on the morning of the third day. Bai Yujing crawled out of the tent and stretched his back. Everyone emerged, breathing in the fresh air outside.
The ground was covered in a blanket of white, and the distant sky was as blue as if washed with water. There were no other people or animals around; this was a pure world untouched by pollution. The sky was cloudless, and everything felt so quiet that one could sense no other existence, as if standing in a legendary holy place. Bai Yujing felt as if he stood at the intersection of blue and white, with only himself remaining in this world that seemed unreal.
The light reflecting off the snow on the ground was dazzling; without goggles, one could easily suffer from snow blindness in such an environment.
Everyone moved around in the open space. Although the blizzard had stopped, it was still thirty degrees below zero. Bai Yujing approached the snowmobile and pulled open the door. To his surprise, it was completely filled with blood, tightly packed without leaving any gaps.
"Wow! I was wondering why the snowmobile wasn't shaking in the back during the storm; turns out this made it worse!" Bai Yujing laughed at Zhou Jun behind him.
The continuous strong blizzard had pushed flakes of snow into every crevice of the vehicle until it gradually filled up. Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun each took a shovel to clear out the snow inside while others hurriedly cleaned up their campsite to prepare for departure again. They had already been delayed by the blizzard for so long; they needed to speed up for the remaining journey!
Liu Xinwu drove the snowmobile while Bai Yujing chatted with Wen Feng and Zhu Wei behind him. Holding a map, Bai Yujing asked, "Wen Feng, where are we currently? How much longer until we reach our destination?"
Wen Feng immediately straightened up and leaned closer, pointing with a gloved finger at a location on the map. "Currently, we are here. To reach Dome A, it's about six hundred kilometers in a straight line."
Dome A is the location of Kunlun Station, and these all-terrain tracked Snowmobiles travel at over thirty kilometers per hour on the Highway. Not to mention the complex terrain of Antarctica, the actual distance would be much greater than six hundred kilometers. Without these Snowmobiles, considering the low temperatures and the ice crevasses everywhere, the dangerous terrain would exhaust Bai Yujing and the others.
Bai Yujing calculated, "So, to reach our destination, we need at least six more days?"
Wen Feng nodded. "About that."
Bai Yujing immediately looked at Liu Xinwu, who was focused on driving. "How many days' worth of food, gas, and diesel do we have left?"
Liu Xinwu thought for a moment. "We have enough fuel to get to Kunlun Station, and there are supplies there. We can refuel before heading back. If we ration our food, it should be enough, but we're running low on gas. We used too much during the snowstorm. I don't know if there are any reserves at Kunlun Station. Otherwise, it will be tough on our return trip!"
Bai Yujing quickly wrote this down in his notebook, recording these issues. Then he asked Zhu Wei, "Professor Zhu, can I ask you a question? Do you think there could be a Prehistoric Civilization in a place like Antarctica? Does the geographical environment support that idea?"
Zhu Wei nodded. "It's quite possible that such civilizations existed. Antarctica hasn't always been in an ice-covered state as it is now. Scientific estimates suggest that hundreds of thousands of years ago, it was not entirely frozen and could support life like other continents. However, the exact timeline of when it became ice-covered is still debated; some say it was a million years ago, while others argue it was only twenty to thirty thousand years ago."
"However, what can be confirmed is that there were signs of life in Antarctica in the past!"
With this conclusion from Zhu Wei, Bai Yujing felt somewhat reassured. He touched the Center in his pocket; after so many twists and turns, he was worried his deductions might be wrong. If they arrived here only to find another incorrect location, he wouldn't know what to do.
"Then what do you think the geology of this area should be like?" Bai Yujing asked again.
Wen Feng smiled immediately. "How can I know what this area is like if I haven't been here yet?"
Zhu Wei also nodded, "However, I do know some information about this area. The geological structure here mainly consists of the crystalline basement from the Primal Era and Proterozoic, with limited sedimentary rocks from the Phanerozoic developed in places like the Charles Prince Mountain Range to the east..."
While the three were engaged in a heated discussion, Liu Xinwu, who was driving in front, suddenly stopped. This caused the Number Two Vehicle behind to stop as well. Immediately, Li Xiang's voice came through the intercom, "Number One Vehicle, why did you stop suddenly? Did you discover something?"
Bai Yujing also looked at Liu Xinwu, who opened his mouth and pointed at the road ahead. Bai Yujing looked over and immediately saw a large expanse of snow covered with a row of very conspicuous footprints leading away into the distance, gradually climbing up the slope.
Bai Yujing quickly got out of the car, holding a probing stick and continuously poking it into the ground to prevent falling into any ice crevices. Finally, he reached the footprints and observed that they were about one and a half times his size, resembling a giant's footprint.
It was clear that these were not human footprints; they appeared to be large animal paws pressed into the snow. Liu Xinwu and the others followed him down to assess the situation, while Wen Feng immediately took out his camera to capture it.
"A bipedal creature with such large paws? Preliminary estimates suggest it must be over two meters tall. What kind of creature is this?" Liu Xinwu's expression grew serious. Discovering such a creature in this area meant they had to be cautious during their overnight camping; if they were attacked by such a beast...
Wen Feng was excitedly snapping photos with his camera, "It must be a Yeti!"
Bai Yujing and Zhu Wei turned to look at Wen Feng. At that moment, Li Hao, Liu Hai, and Zhou Jun from the Number Two Vehicle approached and noticed the footprints on the ground. Their expressions changed as they heard Wen Feng's words and asked in unison, "What is a Yeti?"
Liu Xinwu quickly replied, "Don't listen to his nonsense. The Yeti is just a legendary monster, like a wild man—tall and powerful, over two meters high, known for devouring human flesh. But it's just a legend; no one has ever seen one!"
Liu Xinwu speculated further, "I think it might be some kind of bear or similar creature—possibly an ancient species that has survived. Antarctica is so vast that it's quite possible it hasn't been discovered yet!"
Although no one had heard of bears in Antarctica, this speculation seemed much more plausible than the mythical Yeti. Everyone tacitly accepted Liu Xinwu's explanation. Bai Yujing clapped his hands together and said, "Alright, everyone back to the vehicles. However, it would be best to keep someone on watch tonight; after all, with such a fierce beast around, we need to stay vigilant!"
