Bai Yujing had never seen such a bizarre scene. Behind him was the bright, blinding sunlight, while beneath his feet lay a shroud of darkness, as if night had just fallen. Ahead, in the distance, was an expanse of pitch black, and Bai Yujing could even see stars twinkling. Day and night converged here, and Bai Yujing felt as if he stood in the middle of this line.
Everyone became tense upon seeing this sight, as they knew they were about to enter the Polar Night Zone. This was also why summer was a peak season for Antarctic Research, as the continuous daylight made scientific expeditions much easier. In contrast, winter brought a long, endless night, as if the sun would never rise above the horizon.
However, Bai Yujing and his companions faced a significant problem: the first Snowmobile that had been breaking trail ahead had malfunctioned. Previously, while traversing over two hundred kilometers of crevassed ice, the Snowmobile had encountered several minor issues. Due to the low temperatures and rough terrain, the steel beams and supports of the Snowmobile had cracked. Fortunately, with timely repairs by Li Xiang and Liu Xinwu, they managed to weld the cracks back together.
But this time, the problem seemed more serious; it was quite critical. They could only stop the vehicle here. After fifteen hours of travel today, it was about time to rest.
Liu Xinwu and Li Xiang were inspecting what exactly had gone wrong with the Snowmobile. The cold snowflakes whirled past them; although the wind was not strong, the swirling ice and snow were uncomfortable. Bai Yujing had a piece of cloth wedged between his nose and goggles to protect his face from sunburn. As he breathed in the air that swept past him, it came into contact with long stretches of ice below. Having not shaved for over ten days, his beard was now covered in ice.
Wen Feng said to Bai Yujing: “We’ve entered the Polar Night Zone. We are less than two days away from Kunlun Station, and we are less than a hundred kilometers from our exploration site. Should we go check out the exploration site first or head to Kunlun Station to settle in?”
“Let’s go to Kunlun Station first. We need to take stock of how many supplies we have available before determining our next steps!”
Bai Yujing called everyone over and gathered them inside a tent to warm up and prepare some food. This would help conserve supplies. They had been on this cold land for nearly half a month now; however, thanks to the convenience of the Snowmobiles and abundant supplies, everyone’s spirits remained high.
Bai Yujing took two cups of hot water outside and looked at Li Xiang and Liu Xinwu, who were inspecting the vehicle amidst the wind and snow. He immediately asked, “How is it? Did you find out what the problem is?”
Li Xiang crawled out from under the vehicle and shook his head: “The motor has taken in fuel, causing a rupture in the fuel line’s steel pipe. There’s nothing we can do; we don’t have any spare parts here, so it definitely can’t be fixed!”
Bai Yujing frowned immediately; this was troublesome. With one less Snowmobile, it would significantly impact their subsequent work: “Take some essential supplies with us and leave some food and gas behind. We’ll treat this place as a supply point for our return trip.”
Liu Xinwu nodded: “I suggest we rest today. Tomorrow we can all squeeze together and then push straight through to Kunlun Station!
Bai Yujing agreed with Liu Xinwu's suggestion: "That's right, we must reach Kunlun Station first and see how much supplies are left inside. Without the supplies from Kunlun Station, we won't have enough resources for exploration or to find the ruins of Atlantis, let alone return."
Bai Yujing said to Li Xiang, "By the way, extract the remaining fuel from the tank; it's a precious resource!"
Bai Yujing turned to leave but suddenly noticed something in the distance, like a black dot moving. Although the sky had darkened, Bai Yujing's vision had improved significantly due to physical enhancements, allowing him to perceive objects and surroundings even in darkness, possessing a rudimentary night vision.
Thus, the movement of that black dot appeared very conspicuous to Bai Yujing. This was Antarctica, where the temperature was minus forty degrees; seeing any living creature here was already an abnormal phenomenon.
Bai Yujing immediately walked toward it, but the black shadow moved very quickly and disappeared over a ridge. Liu Xinwu's voice came from behind: "White Collar Team, did you discover something?"
Liu Xinwu shone his flashlight around and suddenly noticed a row of footprints on the ground, his expression changing instantly: "These footprints again; they have appeared once more!"
Bai Yujing nodded and pointed to the distant spot where he had seen the black dot moving: "I just saw something crawling up the mountain from there and then disappearing. There is indeed something moving around us!"
Liu Xinwu exclaimed in surprise, "You could see that in such darkness? Is it real? What does that monster look like?"
Bai Yujing shook his head: "I couldn't see clearly; it was too far away, but it moved very quickly. Look at these large footprints; they definitely aren't easy to deal with. I'll take turns keeping watch with Zhou Jun tonight. You need to drive tomorrow, so get some rest. Inform everyone to be cautious and stay alert!"
Once Bai Yujing and Liu Xinwu entered the tent, Wen Feng served each of them a steaming cup of coffee. The pot contained beef soup made with dehydrated beef and vegetables, emitting an enticing aroma. Liu Xinwu shared what he and Bai Yujing had discovered with everyone; their expressions changed slightly. However, Wen Feng was particularly excited, repeatedly shouting that it must be a Yeti or something similar.
During the night watch, they stayed inside the tent. The person on watch would not rest but would stick their head out through a small gap intentionally left in the tent to observe the surroundings and listen for sounds.
Bai Yujing kept watch during the first half of the night without noticing anything unusual. However, in the latter half of the night, Zhou Jun woke Bai Yujing and Liu Xinwu from their sleeping bags. Seeing Zhou Jun's expression, Bai Yujing knew something was wrong and quickly wrapped himself in his clothes and took out his gun.
Bai Yujing pulled apart the tent flap and looked outside. Zhou Jun pointed at the top of the vehicle, and Bai Yujing immediately saw a huge black shadow swaying on the roof. Even in a crouched position, it was nearly two meters tall, with thick limbs and body, covered in long fur that fluttered in the cold wind. The ice and snow whipped by the wind struck against it, seemingly having no effect.
The creature stood firmly on the roof, observing the tent below as if watching Bai Yujing and the others. Zhou Jun raised his gun, aiming at the monster, but Bai Yujing pressed down on Zhou Jun's gun barrel and shook his head.
The monster seemed to have finished observing or realized that Bai Yujing and the others had spotted it. It then jumped down from the roof and disappeared into the vast snowstorm.
Liu Xinwu let out a sigh of relief. "It's a good thing you didn't shoot just now. This guy is even stronger than a bear. If we hadn't hit a vital spot and it went berserk after tasting blood, we would have been in serious trouble. Luckily, it seems to have no ill intentions and left on its own!"
Zhou Jun remarked, "This monster seems quite intelligent!"
"Don't underestimate the intelligence of these beasts. Humans' instincts and fighting skills in dangerous situations are no match for them; it's just that humans can use weapons," Bai Yujing said. He had just pressed down on Zhou Jun's gun barrel and was thinking along with Liu Xinwu. He was gradually digesting and applying knowledge about survival skills in the wild.
However, Bai Yujing felt that this creature seemed somewhat familiar. It was humanoid and upright; aside from its white fur, he couldn't shake off the feeling that it resembled a scaly monster he had seen in the Eight Hundred Bhikkhuni Tomb. Yet this White-Furred Monster felt smarter than those creatures, which were filled with bloodlust and malice.
