The pitch-black night enveloped the snowy landscape, and it seemed the wind had just ceased. The world after the blizzard had turned completely white, with all traces covered, and the uneven snow was smoothed out.
Inside the tent, Catherine shoved a gun into the mouth of a balding middle-aged white man, smiling as she patted his face. "In this cold weather, you can still think with your lower brain. There are really fools like you everywhere."
The cold barrel traced a circle in the man's mouth as he whimpered and begged for mercy, scared to the point that he could barely stand. "If you cause any more trouble next time, I'll pour water down your pants and then throw you outside. I heard about someone who got frostbite down there and had to have it amputated; I found that very interesting and have been wanting to see it in person. Can you fulfill that wish for me?"
Pulling the gun out of his mouth, Catherine kicked him out. The middle-aged man scrambled away, not daring to look back. McLeod cast a disdainful glance at him before walking into the tent. "Commander Catherine, we have received another message!"
"Translate it for me!" Catherine picked up her coffee and took a sip.
McLeod flipped through his notebook. "The target arrived at China's Kunlun Station at Dome A early this morning. We lost one snowmobile on the way, but there were no casualties, and everyone is in good spirits!"
Catherine nodded. "How far are we from Dome A?"
McLeod replied, "You’ll have to ask Rope about that! But it's probably only a two-day journey. We will have to pass through a glacier where snowmobiles can't go, so we might need to abandon them and proceed on foot."
Rope was the middle-aged white man from earlier. Upon hearing his name, Catherine frowned. "Just hearing his name makes me sick. If we didn't need him, I'd throw him into an ice pit right now. Go ask him, but don't be too polite."
McLeod nodded, and Catherine continued, "By the way, did our informant confirm the location of the Atlantis Ruins?"
"Rope is verifying the coordinates now; the informant isn't professional, so the location is somewhat vague!" McLeod immediately responded.
Catherine grew even more dissatisfied. "That useless pig! Tell him if he can't figure out the exact location by tomorrow, I'll personally execute him!"
"Yes, Commander!"
After McLeod left, Catherine's authoritative expression immediately turned into a frown. "Ah, my face is dry and rough; my skin has worsened, and my lips are chapped. This damn place!"
As soon as Catherine thought about having to get off the vehicle and climb the glacier, trekking through the night at minus forty degrees, she immediately held her head in despair. "Ah! My God! Why did I take on such a mission!"
-----------------
When Bai Yujing woke up in the morning, Liu Xinwu was still sound asleep on the upper bunk. Bai Yujing put on her completely dry clothes, feeling incredibly youthful. Everyone had indulged in a luxurious bath yesterday, washing their clothes clean. In this place, it was quite difficult for clothes to dry quickly.
Bai Yujing had a full beard that she hadn't shaved, which effectively protected her skin in this environment, though it made her look a bit scruffy. When she stepped outside, she noticed that Zhu Wei's room door was open and the light was on.
Bai Yujing peeked inside and saw that Zhu Wei was a woman. Since she was traveling with them, there were many inconveniences along the way. Upon arriving at the base, they arranged for her to have a separate room since conditions allowed for it.
Bai Yujing immediately saw Zhu Wei writing under the desk lamp, filling a map with symbols. Bai Yujing knocked on the door, which caught Zhu Wei's attention as she looked over.
"Hello, why are you up so early? What are you doing?" Bai Yujing asked.
Zhu Wei still had an expressionless face. Throughout their journey, she had spoken very little and never complained about the hardships. The few exchanges they had were mostly with Bai Yujing. Behind her back, Wen Feng and Li Xiang referred to her as the Extinction Master. It must be said that this term was quite fitting—cold-faced, icy mountain, professor; it matched her well.
Zhu Wei glanced at Bai Yujing before turning back. "I'm checking the topographic map of that area. I'm calculating where the ruins are most likely to be located!"
Bai Yujing nodded. She was very pleased with Zhu Wei's competence. "It should be a location where prehistoric creatures likely lived. By calculating what suitable habitats existed before the area was frozen over, we can determine where they are most likely to be!"
Zhu Wei shook her head. "Do not view Prehistoric Civilization and those creatures from a human perspective; they are entirely different beings. The descendants of Atlantis, Merfolk, possess powerful vitality and regenerative abilities and live at the Bottom; their environmental requirements..."
As Zhu Wei continued speaking, she noticed Bai Yujing's expression change and immediately stopped. Bai Yujing curiously asked, "I don't think I've ever mentioned that the descendants of Atlantis are Merfolk?"
Zhu Wei nodded. "However, I received some information before coming here, and I also checked your data. Although it wasn't explicitly stated, your actions in the Eight Hundred Bhikkhuni Tomb have already revealed many issues!"
So that's how it is. If Qian Jia had informed her of some details in advance, that would be possible. They were aware of the existence of Merfolk but had never seen a real mermaid; they had searched the seabed of Shuiyuan Village countless times without finding any remains of them.
Bai Yujing thought for a moment and shook her head: "Qian Jia probably hasn't told you, and they don't know either. Mermaids possess powerful regenerative abilities and vitality, as well as specific environmental requirements. Even I am not entirely clear about this. Professor Zhu, you really know a lot!"
"All of this can be found in the data; there are many legends about mermaids!" Zhu Wei replied calmly, appearing to match his words with some level of understanding.
Bai Yujing's cold expression suddenly broke into a smile: "Don't be nervous, I'm just a bit curious. I believe in you, Professor Zhu. Whether we can find the ruins this time depends on you. Please calculate the possible locations where ruins might exist; we need to start our actions today."
Zhu Wei nodded and buried his head back into his work under the desk lamp. Bai Yujing closed her room door but frowned slightly.
After having dinner in the morning, Bai Yujing immediately set up the mission in the activity room. After more than ten hours of rest and a good night's sleep, everyone was full of energy, focusing intently on Bai Yujing.
Bai Yujing said immediately: "Today I have decided to take three people with me. Including myself, we will be four heading to the potential site of the ruins for exploration. Wen Feng, Zhou Jun, Zhu Wei, you three prepare yourselves; we will set off together. We need to get ready with sleds, a small generator, tents, food... Brother Liu, please help prepare these items."
"Li Xiang, check if there are any spare parts in the base; perhaps we can fix that broken snowmobile on our way back. Also, there is an ice drill at the base; Li Xiang, check it out; we might need it in a couple of days."
"Liu Hai, check your explosives and detonation devices; once we find the target location, they will come in handy!"
After discussing with Liu Xinwu for a bit longer, Bai Yujing prepared to set off. This time it was Bai Yujing driving; after seeing Liu Xinwu drive for so long, even she learned how to do it. Once she got in the car, Liu Xinwu suddenly chased after her.
Bai Yujing opened the car door and saw Liu Xinwu handing her a communication device: "Remember to report back to me periodically. If I have any issues here, I'll contact you!"
"Okay!" Bai Yujing closed the door and drove the snowmobile forward slowly under the darkness illuminated by the headlights. It must be said that thanks to Wen Feng, finding the road accurately in such conditions would have been nearly unimaginable otherwise.
