Leading the Giant Monster forward, the two of them split up to attract its attention, circling around to guide the Giant Monster to their destination, which was at the foot of a snow-capped mountain. The ground still bore traces from Bai Yujing's earlier reconnaissance, with excavated snow pits.
"This is it!" Bai Yujing glanced at Zhu Wei, and they quickly reached a tacit understanding, swiftly making their way over. With a twist of their ski boards, they glided in an S-shape and approached the Ice Crevice.
The two quickly separated, as previously discussed. Bai Yujing led the Giant Monster toward the Ice Crevice. However, Bai Yujing soon realized that the Giant Monster was no longer focused on her; instead, it was chasing after Zhu Wei.
"How could this happen?" Zhu Wei also noticed that the Giant Monster was pursuing her, which was completely different from their plan. It turned out that throughout their escape, the Giant Monster had observed that Bai Yujing was more agile and had superior skiing skills, often unable to catch up with her. This time, the Giant Monster had wised up and decided to chase Zhu Wei instead; as long as Zhu Wei fell into danger, Bai Yujing would surely come back to save her.
Bai Yujing had already realized that the Giant Monster was quite intelligent and possessed a certain level of awareness. Without hesitation, she turned back and moved closer, taking out the Center and heading toward the Giant Monster.
In the darkness, the bright light from the Center immediately caught the Giant Monster's attention. Since Bai Yujing was now very close to it, the Giant Monster quickly turned and swept its arm toward her. Bai Yujing ducked down and crouched to evade it, brushing past the Giant Monster.
The Giant Monster immediately chased after Bai Yujing. However, at this moment, they were only three or four meters apart; at this distance, if the Giant Monster lunged with all its might, Bai Yujing would be finished.
Sure enough, the Giant Monster understood this situation and began its attack. It leaped toward Bai Yujing. Sensing the movement behind her, Bai Yujing exerted herself to glide upward using the slight slope of the snow and inertia.
As the Giant Monster lunged forward with its arms outstretched to grab Bai Yujing mid-air, it did not expect that she would also leap up just in time. Their hands barely missed each other. The massive and heavy body of the Giant Monster crashed down onto the ground, leaving a huge mark and sending snow flying everywhere. However, at this moment, the Ice Surface here no longer had the capacity to bear such immense weight.
In an instant, the Ice Surface shattered. The Giant Monster let out a roar as it struggled on its back before falling into the broken ice below. With a loud crash, a massive hole opened up in the Ice Surface as the Giant Monster quickly fell into an abyss below.
"Roar..."
Snowflakes danced in the air as Zhu Wei realized she could no longer see Bai Yujing's figure. She rushed forward and called out, "Bai Yujing, where are you?"
At that moment, she heard a muffled voice; though it was quiet, it sounded very clear in the icy wilderness: "I'm here!"
Zhu Wei ran over and saw Bai Yujing clinging desperately to the edge of an ice hole. One of her ski boards had already fallen deep into the crevice. It turned out that when Bai Yujing had been too close to the Giant Monster earlier, and with such a large gap in the ice crevice, when the Giant Monster fell through, it nearly dragged her down with it. Fortunately, Bai Yujing reacted quickly and grabbed hold of the edge.
Zhu Wei immediately pulled Bai Yujing up. Panting heavily, Bai Yujing reflected on how thrilling and dangerous their encounter with the Giant Monster had been. However, it seemed like things had turned out well; looking into the depths of the ice crevice revealed nothing but darkness—the spotlight could not reach its bottom—meaning that once the Giant Monster fell down there, it would never come back up.
After taking a moment to rest on site, Bai Yujing and Zhu Wei quickly left. From observing previous footprints, they knew there must be more than one Giant Monster around—immortal bodies with abundant stamina and immense strength—and crucially fast as well. If they encountered a few more of them, Bai Yujing would truly have no choice but to surrender.
However, having lost one ski board made their return journey somewhat troublesome. Bai Yujing could only follow behind Zhu Wei slowly as they made their way back to camp.
At this time, Zhou Jun and Wen Feng had already returned. The two of them were curled up inside the tent cooking. Hearing the commotion outside, Zhou Jun immediately poked his head out of the tent and said, "White Collar Team, Professor Zhu, you two are back! How was it? Did you find anything?"
Zhou Jun took a closer look and suddenly noticed something. "Why did you come back on foot? Did something happen?"
Bai Yujing walked in from outside and shook his head. "No time to explain; it was quite a dangerous trip. We encountered that monster and had a fight with it!"
Zhou Jun's expression immediately turned serious. "That monster! You must have brought guns, right? If you didn't have guns, encountering it in a place like this would be really bad!"
It was much warmer inside the tent. After rubbing his hands together, Bai Yujing said, "I did use my gun, but unfortunately it was useless. I saw the bullets penetrate that monster's head, but it didn't even flinch!"
Zhou Jun's expression turned horrified. "How could that be?"
Bai Yujing replied, "I once saw a type of monster in Neon’s Eight Hundred Bhikkhuni Tomb. It was covered in scales, over two meters tall, and also had an immortal body. However, that type of monster would die if shot in the head. But today’s White-Furred Giant doesn’t even have its head as a vital point; it's really dangerous!"
Listening to Bai Yujing recount the experience made Zhou Jun feel anxious. "You two are really lucky and calm. If it were me and Wen Feng, we probably wouldn’t have made it back today!"
Bai Yujing shook his head. "We must be careful of such monsters from now on; we really have no way to deal with them right now. By the way, did you find anything during your exploration today?"
Zhou Jun shook his head. "No, we didn’t find anything at all, but Wen Feng isn’t feeling too well!"
Bai Yujing immediately looked at Wen Feng, who was sleeping in his sleeping bag. "What happened to him? Did his blisters get worse?"
Zhou Jun nodded. "His feet are all bandaged up; the skin is frozen together with the bandages, and some wounds have even split open. He managed to push through the whole day!"
Bai Yujing looked at Zhou Jun, Wen Feng, and Zhu Wei. "You all did great! Exploring in temperatures below minus forty degrees during polar night is life-threatening for everyone. It has indeed been very tough these past few days. I believe the place Professor Zhu and I explored today is likely Atlantis. Let's rest tonight and return to base tomorrow; Wen Feng needs to recuperate there!"
That evening, Zhu Wei returned to the rear compartment with the ice columns they had extracted for testing. Bai Yujing was at the campsite using a communication device with an extended antenna outside the tent, constantly adjusting the signal.
There was a signal base station at Kunlun Station, so Bai Yujing could still contact Liu Xinwu and others at Kunlun Station from this distance. After finishing their exploration work each day, Bai Yujing would report their situations to each other to maintain communication.
"Beep beep beep! Beep beep beep!"
"Hey, I'm Bai Yujing from the expedition team!"
"Hey! Hey! Hey! I'm the stationed personnel, Liu Hai!"
Bai Yujing was momentarily stunned: "Liu Hai, why is it you? Where's Liu Xinwu?"
Liu Hai immediately replied, " Liu the Guide has a bit of a fever and some discomfort in his lungs, so today I'm keeping in touch with you!"
Bai Yujing asked in confusion, "Oh! How's the situation at the base today?"
"Li Xiang has completely inventoried the warehouse today and said he found some useful items. Liu the Guide went out for a bit, apparently looking for something. When he came back, he wasn't feeling well. Fortunately, after taking some medicine and inhaling oxygen, he's doing better now. Thankfully, there’s no sign of lung inflammation!" Liu Hai responded.
Bai Yujing nodded: "Alright, the expedition team has completed its work here and has basically confirmed our location. We will start returning to the base tomorrow. Wen Feng has had some issues with his foot, so you all need to be prepared. Once we return to the base, we will immediately begin our final operation!"
After hanging up, Bai Yujing felt something was off. Zhu Wei asked, "What's wrong?"
Bai Yujing said, "I was in contact with Liu Hai, but I didn't hear Liu Xinwu's voice. He said Liu Xinwu is sick. I just feel something isn't right, but I can't pinpoint what it is!"
"Liu Xinwu is a very cautious person. Even if he's sick, as long as he can talk, he would definitely communicate with you directly. The fact that he didn't speak means something must be seriously wrong at the base!" Zhu Wei narrowed his eyes. Bai Yujing didn't notice the fleeting look of malice that passed through.
"That's right. Even if Liu Xinwu is ill, as long as he can speak, he would talk to me directly. If not him, he would choose someone he’s most familiar with like Li Xiang to keep in touch with me. There’s no way he would let Liu Hai talk to me instead. Something really has happened at the base!" Bai Yujing's expression changed dramatically.
