It is strange that after passing through Leech Valley, they really did not encounter any leeches again. The mountainous terrain and the dark, humid environment in that area seemed like paradise for leeches.
These creatures won't take your life, but they are disgusting and can easily cause infections or diseases. If it weren't for the fact that this was a necessary route into the mountains, Bai Yujing really wouldn't want to go this way.
After crossing Leech Valley and walking over a few more mountain peaks, they entered Yeren Bay. It is said that wild men once roamed here; however, in Shennongjia, where legends about wild men abound, similar places can be easily found in abundance for reference. Bai Yujing and the others did not take it too seriously.
Standing on the mountaintop, Bai Yujing saw a waterfall flowing down from a distant peak, resembling a white ribbon cascading down from the summit. Lao Qi pointed at the waterfall and said, "We just need to head towards that waterfall!"
While standing on the mountaintop, they could still prepare and find their direction. Once they descended into the jungle, it would be hard to distinguish east from west. It was easy to walk in circles and take many detours from their original path, so having a guide familiar with the mountains was very necessary at this time.
Despite Lao Qi's unremarkable appearance and slight hunchback, his eyes were incredibly sharp. He could effortlessly find the correct path and the most convenient trails in a jungle with no roads or markers.
As they walked, Lao Qi introduced some areas where caution was needed due to the presence of numerous snakes or wild boars. Li Hao immediately said, "What’s there to fear about wild boars? If one dares to come at us, we can just catch it for a feast!"
Bai Yujing retorted, "Stop bragging. When wild boars go on a rampage, even tigers might not fare well against them. You think wild boars only eat plants? They eat meat too!"
Zhong Qiang, who was ahead clearing the path with a Dog Leg Knife, turned around and looked at Li Hao, saying, "A single wild boar is manageable; even an adult one doesn’t scare me. I've hunted them before. But wild boars usually travel in groups—four or five at minimum, sometimes dozens. If they charge at you, they could smash your vehicle!"
Li Hao quickly replied, "If we can't beat them, can’t we outrun them? How fast can one pig run?"
Bai Yujing couldn't stand Li Hao's ignorance any longer: "Wild boars are completely different from domestic pigs. They have incredible stamina and can run over twenty kilometers at high speed while being pursued by hunting dogs. This extraordinary endurance puts marathon runners to shame. Their keen sense of smell can detect food buried a meter underground. With their thick protective skin, you can't outrun them or hide from them; you can't win unless they're in a good mood and spare your life. Otherwise, if you encounter one like this, it's only a dead end for you!"
Li Hao was displeased: "Listening to you makes me feel like I'm not even as good as a pig!"
At this moment, Lao Qi suddenly changed his expression and stopped in his tracks. Bai Yujing also sensed something and crouched down, grabbing Li Hao. When Zhong Qiang saw the situation of the three of them, he quickly hid as well.
The four people who had been chatting and laughing just moments ago instantly fell silent. The only sound left in the forest was the gentle breeze rustling through the leaves. Li Hao was confused, but he could feel that something must have appeared ahead, which made the others tense up. He recalled what they had talked about earlier.
"Could it be that a wild boar really came over?" Although Li Hao had previously dismissed wild boars, after hearing what they said, he realized that such creatures were not to be trifled with in this jungle, especially since they were pack animals. Now that they might actually encounter one, he felt a bit uneasy.
Bai Yujing made a gesture for silence: "Don't speak; it's a black bear!"
Bai Yujing and the others crouched in the dense bushes, watching a massive creature pass by from the slope below. It was a large, fat black bear that stood taller than Bai Yujing when it rose on its hind legs. Even without making a sound as it passed by, its presence exuded an aura of intimidation that sent chills down their spines; this was a true jungle predator.
Its shiny, sleek fur appeared dark and glossy, looking smooth and clean as if it had just come out of the river. As it ambled by leisurely, someone became too nervous and stepped too hard on a dry branch, causing it to snap with a loud crack.
This sound was extremely jarring in the quiet jungle, especially for the black bear. It was instantly startled and turned its gaze toward Bai Yujing and the others. Its body quickly shifted into a defensive posture, with its fur standing on end from head to tail as it prepared to unleash a deafening roar that could probably be heard throughout the entire Wildman Valley.
"Roar!"
Once Bai Yujing and the others revealed themselves, they immediately stood up to confront the black bear. The bear's roar swept past them like a fierce wind, causing everyone to shudder.
Bai Yujing stepped forward and drew his straight knife from the side pouch on his back. He knew that at this moment, he absolutely could not show weakness or panic; fleeing would only trigger the bear's predatory instincts. Playing dead was not an option either—some bears would even eat carrion.
Holding the knife defensively, Bai Yujing exuded an imposing presence. He had seen his fair share of dangerous creatures; while he couldn't claim to have fought tigers or dragons directly, he had faced formidable beings like Yeti head-on before. Although this black bear was tough, Bai Yujing was not afraid of it!
After staring each other down for a minute, the black bear sensed that these humans were not worth the trouble and slowly backed away, gradually disappearing into the jungle without leaving a trace.
"Wow! Where did that bear come from? It's so big, it really scared me. Luckily, Old Bai, you are reliable; even the bear is afraid of you!" Li Hao said, feeling relieved after the bear walked away.
Zhong Qiang also relaxed his grip on the Dog Leg Knife and sighed in relief, saying, "It's a good thing it's summer now; this black bear has plenty to eat. If we had encountered an injured bear or a starving one, we would have been in serious trouble."
Lao Qi put away his Shotgun and remarked, "How could a black bear appear here? This doesn't seem right. There were never bears around here before; it's like seeing a ghost. The bear didn't want to mess with us, but this area is its territory. We need to leave quickly; otherwise, when it gets dark, that guy might come back!"
Bai Yujing understood the situation as well. Just now, seeing the black bear's shiny fur and its robust size made him realize that they were likely not in much danger. As long as the bear felt they were not easy targets, it would naturally retreat.
However, this sudden encounter still left everyone feeling a bit shaken. They quickened their pace and moved forward, putting aside their plans to stop for a break and prepare lunch.
