"Bang!"
A gunshot echoed through the jungle, and immediately a canine animal was seen rushing from a distance, collapsing to the ground, dead in an instant. Another wolf charged forward, attempting to knock Bai Yujing down. Bai Yujing sidestepped and pierced its throat, watching as it struggled a few times before slowly gasping its last breath.
Bai Yujing could even smell the wolf's foul breath and feel its hot panting. He withdrew his short knife and pushed the wolf aside. Zhong Qiang came over to take a look, astonished at Bai Yujing.
"What a fierce and precise strike, not a bit off! You’re impressive, brother!" Zhong Qiang was genuinely surprised. Looking at Bai Yujing's physique, he realized they were about the same size and both had trained; their walking posture and habitual movements were easy to identify. However, how skilled Bai Yujing truly was remained unknown. At this moment, it seemed that this guy was indeed formidable—was he really as capable as his reputation suggested?
Bai Yujing smiled but did not respond. As they continued on their way, when Bai Yujing passed through Yeren Bay, he spotted wild goats and deer, along with some tracks of wild beasts. Now encountering wolves again, according to Lao Qi, this situation was definitely abnormal. These animals typically lived deep in the forest; this area was still on the outskirts where humans frequently entered. Therefore, even if there were animals around, they would only appear in small numbers and not so frequently.
"What could be causing this? Why are the animals from the deep mountains running out? This situation is very strange!" Bai Yujing also felt something was off.
The group then tied up the two wolves to take with them, planning to handle them at the next location—eating what they could on the spot and taking the rest as roasted meat. They had already left Yeren Bay and were gradually approaching Waterfall Area.
As Bai Yujing moved forward, he heard the sound of rushing water. After passing through the trees, he found himself in an open area.
Bai Yujing saw the waterfall he had encountered earlier that morning. From a distance, it appeared beautiful, but as he got closer, he could truly appreciate its magnificent beauty—the cascading water flowed down from the mountaintop in layers, gradually dispersing and converging as it brushed past large boulders before flowing into the Deep Pool below, forming a river that meandered into the forest.
Underneath the waterfall, a refreshing mist enveloped the area, giving off a cool and pleasant scent. The sound of rushing water was not jarring; instead, it was melodious—a symphony of nature.
Near the Deep Pool and stream by the waterfall, various stones formed a large sandy area that was perfect for camping. Additionally, there were fish in the water. Having set out at dawn and walked all day long, everyone felt somewhat tired.
They began preparing dinner—boiling water for cooking, cleaning wolf meat, and setting up tents. The group quickly busied themselves. Today had not been particularly peaceful; they had encountered black bears and wolves along with some strange unidentified animal tracks that hinted at the mystery and danger of Shennongjia. No one knew what awaited them deep within the jungle.
Following Li Hao to fetch water, Bai Yujing immediately asked, "How is it? Are you regretting coming with me? I told you this trip isn't a good deal!"
Li Hao was quite thick-skinned; despite being scared along the way, he had forgotten his initial fear by this point. "I think it's great, very exciting. After staying in the city for so long, I should come and experience the taste of nature."
Bai Yujing was filling his water bottle from the clear stream. Although the water looked clear, it still needed to be boiled before drinking; otherwise, getting a stomach upset in the mountains would be very troublesome.
At that moment, Li Hao seemed to have noticed something and pointed across the stream, saying to Bai Yujing, "What do you see over there?"
After taking a look, Bai Yujing immediately put away the water bottle and screwed on the cap. "Let's go check it out!"
On the sandy ground across the stream, Bai Yujing quickly noticed signs of a campsite, including traces of a bonfire and cooking. After inspecting, Bai Yujing concluded that these signs must have been left in the last ten days; otherwise, they wouldn't still be preserved.
After checking around, Bai Yujing stood up and looked at the surroundings and the mountains behind them. "Based on the time and location, it's very likely that Lin Ruoqiao and her group camped here. It seems we've chosen the right path; this is indeed the route Lin Ruoqiao took!"
Li Hao became excited. "So you're saying if we follow this route, we can find Lin Ruoqiao and her group?"
Bai Yujing nodded. "That's right. But look at the size of the campsite; it seems like there were quite a few people. They must have had a substantial number of people entering the mountains this time and were well-prepared. They haven't come out yet, so we need to be cautious!"
"Who is it?"
Just as Bai Yujing finished speaking, he suddenly turned his head to look behind him, his gaze sharp as he focused on the forested area of the mountains behind them. The sound of the waterfall completely drowned out all other noises, and when Bai Yujing looked over, he only saw trees swaying.
Li Hao walked over and looked in that direction. "What's going on? There's nothing there!"
Bai Yujing shook his head. Recently, this feeling had been growing stronger; as long as someone was watching him from behind or had ill intentions, Bai Yujing could definitely sense it. He was very confident about this. Just now, he felt that something was watching him: "It can't be wrong; my instincts don't lie. Someone was definitely watching us just now!"
Li Hao looked around again but still found nothing. At that moment, they heard Zhong Qiang's voice calling from the campsite they had chosen in the distance. Bai Yujing and Li Hao quickly filled their water containers and rushed back to the camp.
Zhong Qiang looked at the two of them running back and said unhappily, "You two, don't slack off! It took you so long to get water, and it's almost dark. We need to move faster!"
Li Hao immediately recounted what he had discovered by the riverbank, along with Bai Yujing's findings. At that moment, Lao Qi returned with firewood. After listening to what Li Hao had said, he immediately replied, "Since we've found their campsite, it means Old Smoky chose the same route into the mountains as I did. We're not on the wrong path; as long as we follow this route in, we can make more discoveries. As for your findings, Bai Yujing, what do you think, Qiangzi?"
Zhong Qiang thought for a moment before saying, "Let's be cautious. Recently, wild animals in the mountains have been acting strangely and moving outwards for some reason. Even if no one is targeting us, we must remain vigilant. We should take turns keeping watch at night; what do you think?"
Bai Yujing nodded. "I agree with this plan. Everyone should be careful tonight; this place feels a bit strange!"
Li Hao added, "I agree too!"
Lao Qi had no objections either. "Alright then, let's do it your way!"
