Four people took turns keeping watch at night, with Bai Yujing scheduled for the second shift. The forest was eerily quiet, only the sound of the waterfall could be heard. Bai Yujing, feeling bored, tended to the campfire, adding more wood. The dark red flames flickered, casting a long shadow of Bai Yujing. By midnight, he returned to the tent and called out to Li Hao. This guy, yawning and reluctant, finally got up: "Getting up in the middle of sleep is really uncomfortable!"
Bai Yujing took off his coat and handed a dagger to him: "Alright, be careful, don’t doze off. Stay alert; when it’s time, go into the tent and wake Qiangzi!"
Outside, it was pitch black. Li Hao sat by the campfire, and as the flames danced, he felt a mass of shadows flickering around him—shadows of trees, rocks, tents, and his own shadow intertwined, creating an eerie atmosphere that made him feel like he was surrounded by dancing demons. Li Hao's drowsiness suddenly faded a bit; combined with the cold wind blowing against him, he couldn't help but rub his arms.
"This place feels a bit creepy at night!"
At first, Li Hao managed to keep himself awake, but after sitting for a while and getting used to the surrounding sounds, he began to doze off again. The sound of the waterfall nearby sounded like a lullaby.
Just then, a light voice jumped down from the trees in the forest. After curiously circling around the tent, it approached Li Hao from behind. With his eyelids battling each other in sleepiness, Li Hao didn’t notice the shadow that had appeared behind him. After observing Li Hao for a moment, the shadow slowly retreated.
"Hey! It’s time; you can go back to rest now. I’ll take over from here!"
Li Hao buried his head on his knees and was startled awake when Zhong Qiang tapped him on the shoulder. Zhong Qiang frowned but said nothing; after all, both he and Lao Qi were technically hired by this big boss.
Li Hao rubbed his face and felt embarrassed; he hadn’t expected to fall asleep while keeping watch: "Sorry! Nothing happened while I was sitting here; I just couldn’t hold on!"
"It’s fine; you can go inside and rest!"
At this point, there were still several hours until dawn, and the campfire gradually dwindled. Zhong Qiang added another log to it and listened to the crackling sound of burning wood while staring into the distant forest and hills. He stood up when it started to get light outside, stretched lazily, and prepared to wash his face and wake everyone up for departure. However, after taking just two steps, Zhong Qiang's expression changed drastically as he quickly retreated.
He noticed several dirty muddy footprints left on the ground around the tent.
